Also, Malcolm Gladwell did a piece on comparing black athletes to women in science. Africans (probably, might have been proven) have much more genetic diversity because our species originated from there. Because of that they have much higher variance in performance. So while the average black person might be similar to the average caucasian person, there's more "outliers" at the extreme end of the spectrum. And the women in science comparison was that while they might be smarter on average, there's fewer extreme outliers which you would want for science.

What just happened in women's high jump? Nobody knew what was happening. A referee got 2 chin-kisses for some reason and 7 of the other athletes seemed to go into a girl-discussion. It sounded like something about what it took to qualify for the final and why 14 could end up qualifying to the final 12...

They decided not to try to jump 1.96m and have 14 girls qualify at 1.93m instead of the twelve spots attributed at 1.96m normally required.

Same thing happened in the mens pole vault yesterday. Seems like a couple of girls got screwed over by this though even though they cleared 193, thought they'd get through with everyone passing and then finding out they missed out.

Elimination race in 4x400 meters. South Africa crashed, Kenya crashed and lost the depeche and Poland crashed in an exchange even though they succeeded at finishing it well.

One crash (South-African got injured) and one fall in the 4x400m relay round 1 heat 1. Far more action than I would have expected. Hope the guy gets well soon.

Drama in the second semifinal 4x400! Jamaica having a runner stop appearently with an injury. Bahamas and USA won clearly and in less than 3 minutes. Russia third and then Dominican Republic, but Dominican Republic was disqualified and the huge surprise of Venezuela qualified for the final!

The first runner for US 4x400m just seemed much slower than the other three to me. Their 3rd runner was a beast though.
