Mr Leonard also called for an investigation into the Chinese, saying they could be using genetic manipulation. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2181121/Ye-Shiwen-US-attacks-China-drugs-row-supergirl-swimmer.html#ixzz22BJc84Ug What a bunch of crap. If that's so then Chinese genetic research is about half a century ahead of everyone else's. Yes, Shiwen's swim was amazing, but not necessarily suspicious. It is entirely possible for young swimmers to drop a large amount of time off of their events. If, on the other hand, she was 26, instead of 16, and has improved by that much, I would understand the suspicion. Every once in a while great athletes come along, perhaps she is one of them. Also, 400 IM is a very complex event that relies on winning distance with a swimmer's best stroke, and keeping up with the rest on all other strokes; almost everyone knew Phelps wasn't going to beat Lochte after the first 100m fly in the 400 IM. Shiwen held out until the last 100m; free was her ace. In 2011, Shanghai, Lochte went 4:07 (his last 50 was not slower than Shiwen's that time); now he dropped 2 seconds - those 2 seconds dropped exclusively from his 100 breast portion of the race. Out of his 7 competitors 4 had a faster 100 free at the end; he was ahead of the WR at 300m, yet was behind it by the end of the race. Lochte never planned on banking on the last 100m, merely to survive it. Do I even need to mention Lochte's tendency to not save anything until the end? That's why he has one of the slowest last 50m sprints relative to the rest of his race.

Kinda sad since almost all of them will be swapped out for the finals, but I guess when you know that you can give it your absolute all energy wise at least. Strength in depth etc

Personally I don't understand how butterfly works at all...no idea how people manage to swim that, but yeah breast stroke apparently has very specific technique because it's really easy to slow yourself down and whatnot.

Today in the pool everyone was using breaststroke. Breaststroke is what you are taught first and what non-competitive swimmers almost exclusively use.

Plus your not taught to do breast stroke like they do professionaly, your taught to keep your head above the water when your learning (pretty sure i was) and not how the athletes were doing it earlier, most of the race was underwater, pushing yourself along then up for a breath and back down. Butterfly is always imo the most grueling as it takes a hell of a lot of muscles to keep coming that far out of the water.
