I thought the reason they kept all of Riven's animation cancels was because she was designed from the ground up to be a fighting game character (specifically Marth from SSBM).
that was only her Q and marth's side B
I think when they were making Riven they took some scrapped ideas and put them into Fiora v1.
But yes, Riven is designed and coded specifically to have a lot of animation canceling. If you want to player her well, you have to be good at her animation cancels. Take those away and she's going to need buffs to everything and her skill floor drops hard.
Grave's self knockback on his ult was put there intentionally to take him out of range of what he ulted. It's supposed to be the final shot.
Sure I see that but why remove renektons cancel?
This also comes with the question of "is the initial intent more interesting than the current implementation"? Don't know if I can answer that for graves specifically but I do think just saying "it wasn't designed that way" is a poor reason for changing something.
New Maokai feels really shitty. Don't know if it's strong or not but the champ just doesn't feel fun to play. Quite enjoyed the old Maokai.

It is if "It was designed this way" means "It's balanced this way." If it was kept, they'd probably have to drop a significant amount of damage from his ult.
I dunno about Renekton, my brain doesn't want to work right now and I can't find it.
somehow i doubt they designed her with current auto canceling in mind if i remember right they removed riven's auto canceling on PBE but mains cried so hard they had to revert those changes, renekton has a lot smaller player base so they just said fuck it and went with changes, on a bright side renekton mains subredit seems to be happy apparently update fixed a lot of bugs and made him smoother to play allowing new things like titanic W cancels, E flash etc and overall feel like a new champion. https://www.reddit.com/r/RenektonMains/comments/6913tn/everything_i_have_found_so_far_gameplay_breaking/

Because you can't just remove her auto cancels and not heavily compensate for it.
Iirc, the change they put on was actually her Q autocanceling itself, which looks odd and drastically drops the skill floor for her. Riven mains have a hard on for her being difficult to play.
Rioter For the record, Riven is one of the few champions in the game that have intentionally scripted animation cancels.
i've had people within 500 range of me out run that thing rofl
you can't hit it unless someone is within melee range (so after w'ing onto them) and it's not even a good zoning tool because it's so damn slow and the range is actually not as long as you would expect. about half the length of a lane. nami ult is like 20x better of an ultimate
i noticed its a bit slow, but wasnt paying too much attention to it because maokai saplings hurt like a bitch now and i was trying to run away from these random explosions
#2. Riot's insistence that they are "preserving" the feel of a character when they are actually fundamentally changing the move that defines that character is extremely annoying. I'm not even a Sej player, but I do play Amumu and I'm sure his ult will be getting this treatment soon enough.
wonder how riot plans to fix that without gutting cho or the new item
Quite simple. Stone plate active is not actually reducing true damage. Change it so it does reduce true damage (which is what the description implied in the first place). Problem solved.

Tested out renekton, and I think it's fine. W can be canceled by basically everything now, including titanic and all skills, so his trade pattern if you want to get in and out is incredibly fast.
I absolutely love Gargoyle's Stoneplate. The shield you can get from Colossus with it is completely rediculous, even more hilarious on tanks that have shields which scale off health.

This ain't LiquidDota bro. True Damage is not reduced by anything in the game. There were bugs at points where it was reduced, but it is never intended to be reducible or amplifiable in any way.
The only thing comparable to "pure damage" in League is the Nexus Obelisk, which penetrates shields and damage immunity, and possibly health costs on abilities.
