If players held the spot the challenger teams would not receive a salary in the first place though (or only a fraction of it). In case of Huma Riot needs to force a sale.

While I completely agree with the bolded point is challenger teams not getting huge salaries that bad? It feels like its better to be in control of your own spot and not have to worry about being held hostage by an owner

Well you can argue this back and forth. You can make the same argument about LCS itself. That players should only get money for tournament wins, LCS should not even exist but open tournaments instead etc. A matter of personal opinion, I can see both sides.
Just saying that all of this would be a completely different system. You cant have the salaries, team structure etc as you have now and spots not owned by orgs at the same time.

I'm sure that Cris' inting darius was just an unfortunate game, no one would ever intentionally lose matches to get an easier playoffs opponent. Especially coast, they've been around the scene for so long they would never do something so shady
