Like you said there's no real difference skillwise between gold 4 and 1, so it's just purely a cosmetic reward which you can earn by having success in soloq. I still don't see how that's anything but a better version of the mastery banners. If you care that much about the details of your rank, and you're still gold, maybe just go practice :p How does it promote flaming? If anything the opposite is true, since having a d5 or p5 player with their border performing badly (since they're way worse then the average player of that league) inspires much more flame, as they do much worse then expected, then if their border had something indicating they were at the lower range for the league. You do know there are more people in gold or plat 5, then in gold or plat 3+4 combined right? (and even moreso for diamond.) It's not going to be a rare occurrence to have division 5 player, and if you're going to flame someone for being division 5 in probably every single game, then you were probably going to flame anyway... They're literally just adding more detail to their ranked rewards, are you really saying the league community is "too toxic" for ranked rewards? that's like, lyte levels of reasoning :o ambiguity is definitely better for this. if you are the only x5 in a game of x4s or x3s then your displaying your rank from last season is gonna incite much more hostility than everyone simply being labled as x because it gives the illusion to the rest of the team that they are somehow better than the one guy who isn't x4 or x3. in reality the entire group is around the same level unless there was a duo queue involved somewhere because matchmaking put them together. it's not lyte level logic. it's been a trend that has existed in the game and is pretty good reason for them not to do this when they already removed elo based champion select for this reason. the last statement about already flaming someone isn't necessarily true either. if someone wants to flame someone, then they are going to look for reasons to do it. therefore you should give them fewer reasons to do it and it is less likely to happen. i think that this idea goes against all of the other changes they have and are planning to implement to make ranked play feel less terrible. it might be less bad if it reflected current rank of current season because it'd change over time. i'm not saying that league is too toxic for ranked rewards, just that for matchmaking purposes; more obscure information leads to better games. there also exist better ways to reward players for ranked motivation than this.

This sentiment is ridiculous... Should we remove the ability to communicate in champ select because people might flame someone for losing lane when they said they mained that lane? Remove items because people might flame item builds? o.0 People who are gonna flame are gonna flame, removing features because they might give "ammunition" is just dumb, you just remove things which "cause" flame and expect toxicity to change at all. Besides, from the games i've played since the announcement (only ~5, so a small sample but still) people are being way way more tryhard and positive then they were before. They actually care about winning now, it's great.

For example, if we compare Gold 1-5, Gold 1 players from Season 4 takes significantly fewer games to re-achieve Gold in Season 5. Some of this may have to do with the soft reset, but overall I'd say that Gold 1 players are a lot better than Gold 5 players.

This dub thing is just a silly bonus getting mad about it is ridiculous my guess is the people that are, are the same people who are passive aggressive in games and then shocked when they are always in fights and think everyone is toxic without realizing that they infect are toxic aswell. The only people i can imagine actually being salty about it are people who barely made it into the next tier (g5/p5/d5 ppls) and now feel like they've been "robbed" of their status by having their rewards diminished. From looking at the reddit thread, the vast majority of people just seem mad that fx: they don't get to share the same border as d1 people because they're at d5 0lp, and are just trying to find any aspect of it they can to criticise.

Making massive assumptions doesn't really add any value to a discussion. In fact no one here is even talking about their own personal rank so all you are doing is trivializing anyone that disagrees with you by saying they have some alternate agenda that they aren't mentioning. I've stated why I dislike it. There's no "i'm just salty because I'm in g5/p5/d5 etc. as I'm not). It's actually possible for people to dislike something based on what it is and not how it affects them. I'd be fine with that if divisions actually meant anything outside of Diamond which unfortunately they don't. Riot should adjust their system to give divisions real meaning if they want to attach fake meaning to them through outside stuff.

The difference between division 4 and 5 may be small enough that your mythical actual skill level might be 4 on a good day and 5 on a bad day. But there is a noticeable difference between division 5 and division 1, at any tier level.

Right now if you see a Platinum border, you know that the person is somewhere between P1 and P5, and so therefore their actual skill is somewhere between a high Gold-level player who got lucky to get to Plat 5, or a low Diamond-level player who couldn't make it through P1 elo hell. Since you don't have any more information without going to OP.GG, on average you think that they are just probably somewhere in Platinum. All is well. But if you see a Platinum V border (and most Platinum borders are Platinum V borders), you know for a fact that either: 1) He can't get out of Plat V 2) He chose to stop playing in Plat V Either way, it suggests that the person's true skill is not much better than a high Gold player, which aligns with what most people think about Plat V players anyway. So adding division markers is bad for Plat V players. On the other hand, even if you see a Platinum I border, it's almost a mark of shame, in the same way that the Veteran Badge for someone who spent 100+ games in that tier is insulting: it is a constant and very visible reminder of your failure to get to Diamond. So it's not even better for Plat I players, the people it's supposed to benefit. I think borders are supposed to make people feel good about their accomplishments, and adding divisions will detract from that for not much benefit. I agree that it is something worth including for D5 -> D1, or maybe even just for D1.

So adding division markers is bad for Plat V players. This is what I was refering to when talking about division 5 people complaining, their rewards were objectively downgraded, so they do have a reason to dislike the change, and as we mentioned earlier division 5 people make up like a third of ranked players or something, so it's not a trivial number. I don't know (or really care) about the rankings of the majority of people in this thread, and i specifically pointed out that i was saying it in response to what i read in the reddit thread... Sure it sucks if you got really close to diamond or plat or whatever, but ended the season in p1/g1/s1, but i don't think having a border that points out you were division 1 is going to "insult" you any more then just the fact you still have a plat/gold border does. Personally I would definitely prefer to have a p1 border to a plat border if i was stuck in plat 1. Besides, while there might not be that much skill difference between a g4 and a g2, or a plat 3 and a plat 1, there is some, and a lot of people i know who are gold/silver are suddenly all having great fun spamming soloq and competing with each other. They don't play very often or very seriously, and never thought they had a chance of getting platinum or gold or whatever their next league was, but having a micro goal to aim for which they can feasibly tryhard for by the end of the season has added a lot to their game. Literally all they're doing is making season rewards slightly more accurate, and making progress feel more rewarding That's all

+ Show Spoiler + in halo 3 staff sergeant was an icon you got if you got to something dumb like 300 games without a rank up, and yes it was visible to both teams in the pregame lobby.

It is painfully obvious that if you get a Plat I border, that you tried and failed to get Diamond. That's the reason it's even worse than just a Platinum border: I would find a Plat I border hugely humiliating. And even if you break through and get your Diamond 5 border, now you're pissed because people will discount your achievement. That's why I'm not a huge fan of this change. ehhhh I stopped at plat 1 because law school sucks my life away

You may say: "your MMR is low!". Well, on Platinum II I was gaining more than losing, then Platinum I and KABOOM I get 12-15 for winning and 20-25 for losing. Additionally, remember when there used to be a time where Diamond V was ridiculously clamped? How do you think Riot fixed that problem? I suspect they just released some of the pressure on Diamond V and moved them to Platinum I instead. It is the natural solution. TLDR: Platinum I is probably not as much of a failure as you may think.
