Because she's the staple "I crowd out all the other utility mages." When utility mages are desirable, she's the #1 pick of them and stays that way until the meta changes. There is no reason to pick a utility mage that isn't Orianna.

To be fair, that's because she is only one left that is really gold reliant enough to need to be a mid. The rest of then are still good, you just don't call them utilities mages you call them supports. Raka, Lulu, Janna, Morg, etc.

gragas to an extent also used to bring a lot of utility it was just overlooked because his damage was bonkers and he took reduced damage at near 100% uptime

Gragas still had counter play in lane though atleast untill he could one shot the back line. Ori was good in every match up/team comp. and if I could remeber correctly gragas was the champion that was used a lot at worlds to counter pick ori a after the zed nerfs.

Except he didn't.Literally every single pro player was complaining about how it is impossible to shutdown a good gragas.

Old Gragas and Oriana are basically the Lee Sin and Elise of the mid lane. They were so good and consistent, you could pick them in any teamcomp and play them into any matchup.
