May I ask what level you play at?
Riven and Renekton are both very, very good at what they do. Both of them see competitive play, and they're very, very viable. Maybe you're trying to force square pegs into round holes by trying to get them to do something their kits aren't designed to, but both are some of the strongest lategame fighters/bruisers.
If you have any questions about how to play a champ or whether or they're viable, go ahead, but blanket statements that are wrong will get shot down.

I'm curious about what you consider overall utility and engaging opportunistically. I'd say both of those champs have them in spades. Super competitive picks both of them, to the point where they can be safely first picked.
On the broader question, champs should have variable power curves IMO. Adds to the strategic choice. Do we play for a superior late game? Do we pick strong mid game champs to end the game before their strong late game? Do we pick strong early game champs to snowball an advantage?

Took me about 100 games to get out of clamping.
I started clamping really hard after I got promoted to Dia5. Getting 4-6 per win and losing 16-23 per loss. I went 0-90 and everything in between a dozen times. After doing that 90 back to 0 back to 90 a few times, it finally started to loosen up and im like +/- 15pt per now.
Just stop caring and itll eventually work itself out.
