I'm not even sure if this is "on topic" enough for this thread, but the comments/tears in this http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=431529#14 are just so hilarious. Funny little story.

LOL #1

SKT has teams in LoL and sc2 and BW so it really could have been any of them, but league's obvious popularity was predictable.

People still play sc2? I thought everyone gave up on that experiment after the expansion came out.

They were clearly actually talking about special forces.

Had a funny game game yesterday. Was duo duoqueing with a friend. He's playing on his plat smurf [he's diamond 1]. And some guy in champ select goes 'diamond 1 smurf, I'll go top'. He goes to lane, dies twice 1v1 before 4 min mark, goes 'lag'. And then afk rest of game. I ain't even mad, was fucking hilarious.

I think it mainly was about BW vs LoL, not so sure if you can say SKT has a rich history in SC2 at all

Not gonna lie, I think it's kind of unreasonable for people to expect League fans to know about the history of BW. Yeah it's nuts that we have SKT playing at worlds with large portions of the League community completely ignorant as to who Boxer, iloveoov, or Bisu are but why should current League fans be expected to know about a game they aren't fans of?

Sure, part of the reason Korea is successful in League is because of Brood War but that doesn't mean the history of BW is very relevant to the average League fan.

i think calling sc2 an experiment is inappropriately dismissive, but it's true that starcraft seems to be truly niche at this point. on the flip side, i'm constantly surprised at how many of the people i meet are familiar with league of legends. at the extreme end this includes some who never really played the game but will watch tournaments, which strikes me as being perhaps the best indicator that league as an esport is deserving of the name

Well I think that anyone who considers themselves SKT fans should at least know about the rich history behind the rivalries between them and KT, and to an extent Samsung.

Maybe, but are people who like Faker and are 'fans' of SKT now that they've won worlds truly fans? If SKT (or Faker) is just decent in Spring/Summer like Frost was how many of those 'fans' are going to remain fans?

Sure it'd be nice if they researched SKT's history but I don't think anyone should expect them to do that. I don't know the ins and outs of the Atlanta Braves history but I've been a fan since I was a kid.

Well as I said in the thread, I don't blame them for not knowing. To most of them it's probably just another Korean team that destroys white people. I don't think anyone does a great amount of research on every team that wins a tournament, so how are they going to know that this is the one with the rich history?

I mean this is the great thing about it, isn't it? So many new people are getting into eSports, especially in the West, to levels not really seen before. You can't expect these guys to have a knowledge of eSports history, even if it's as important as BW.

Exactly. And to compare to real sports most fans don't know the history of the team they root for. Silly that people in that blog felt like those kids needed to know the history of SKT but then again this is TL so I kind of understand their sentiment.

Does it ever strike you as weird to treat the proxies of Samsung and a telecom company as having a rich relationship and history. To me that seems as weird as being really really interested in the history of general motors mascots vs Toyota mascots.

Well I guess I can't really relate. When I started following BW in '07 I got hooked on Bisu/Best and watched a ton of the older VODs and familiarized myself with all the older members and ex-members. So through that research I became fans of midas/intotherainbow etc. After worlds I kinda expected at least some new fans to sub and watch ogn vods, especially since there's only 2 splits to watch.

To be fair SKT and CJ entus existed before their sponsors, they both rented out little houses and tried to make it as pros at the very earliest days of BW.
