Yeah, that's kinda my point. Poppy's Q is magical dmg, Nunu should always CDR boots.

Is there a limit to MPen and APen? Is it useful to stack them beyond a certain point? Is there a certain number I should aim for? Does LW pierce 40% of my targets armor or does it increase my existing APen by 40%?

It's probably because LoL as an esport is still on it's baby shoes. There will probably a need for an ingame leader soon.
Yeah ego can be a huge part of a team not working. That's why an all-star team in CS for example isn't common.

my 2cents on the whole leader for the team thing
from playing with TSM as a member and playing with my team as a leader
leading a team is alot more work than u can ever imagine
in TSM regi lead the team in game,almost always made amazing calls,kept the team on the same page throughout the whole game and also did his share of carrying as a solo
he had lots of flaws such as immaturity,super ego and the inability to control himself but solomid woulda gotten nowhere w/o regi as leader
lot of the things that regi was bad at or didnt wanna do
such as schedule practice,research picks,get benchwarmers,deal with teamdrama i dealt with cuz i knew regi was unable to and that kept the team in shape
i'd duo qued with every member of clg and most of the top 25 and i can tell u no1 leads the team as well as regi
regi isn't a great leader cuz he's born with some kinda "leader" gene
his a great leader cuz he knows how to keep the team in line and he's game knowledge is through and through
ima write about leading my korean team later cuz i wanna go play but
TLDR regi's a great leader even though his maturity level is horrible and TSM was lucky to have him lead

Yea, that would be a good idea, I don't know why it's so hilarious watching people go steamrolling in with all spells firing off and summoner spells and whatnot, only to just get kited and killed.
