I did end up playing wow for 4 years, and let me tell you, that game will kill anything you ever had resembling gaming skill. It requires no twitch reflex and is made to make sure you can think slow and not pay attention and still succeed. When I finally got back into sc i had to start all over at 50apm. lol if you think that's bad try Shadowbane. That game was designed to be 'PvP-focused', and yet combat occurred at ~3 seconds per automatic melee swing, doing 100 or so damage to a person who could have 2000 health. The only choices you had to make were when to press one of a handful of buttons that would activate a 'power' such as 'Your enemy can't use powers for 5 seconds.' In other words, the winner of any given fight was determined entirely by class choice. I have never felt more sick and shocked at a game's poor design than every moment that I began a fight with somebody and knew with 100% certainty that I was going to die and there was nothing I could do about it... and the worst part was, that death would be in like 4 damn minutes. Nothing to do except mechanically follow the only options you have, get a soda, IM a friend, go to the bathroom, come back, and ignore the kiddie that talked smack to you after he 'owned' you. Those 4 minute periods of existential video game pain killed a little bit of the 'gamer wonder' in me forever.
edit: oh wait you can't try Shadowbane anymore. It went free and is dead now, right? last i heard

I tend to be a closet gamer, except with my closest friends. My interest in SC is primarily as a fan, rather than a player myself. I've gotten a couple friends mildly interested in it, but they all still think I'm crazy for watching VODs and replays all day.

All accounts are fictional but based on real events. I have never managed to convince a non-SC gamer to get into SC.
non-gamer (girl): + Show Spoiler +her: "What're you doing?" me: "Watching Starcraft." her: "What's that?" me: "It's a game... there're TV stations in S.Korea dedicated to it's coverage, it's a pretty big deal [sends youtube link to OSL finals]" her: "wow, that's pretty crazy" me: "yeah [chats about SC for a while]" her: "oh, I wasn't interested in hearing more about it. it's just crazy" me: "fml"
gamer (girl): + Show Spoiler +her: "what's your favorite game?" me: "starcraft" her: "I like WoW and guitar hero." me: "oh"
non gamer (guy): + Show Spoiler +him: "I'd rather fuck girls and make money/shoot guns/go fishing/eat hamburgers/etc than play games." me: "ok"
gamer (guy): + Show Spoiler +him: "what's your favorite game?" me: "I like starcraft" him: "oh, I'm so pumped for SC2!" me: "Yeah, me too! Wanna play SC?" him: "no... that game is ancient and buggy." me: "..."

The other situations are always just that they play fastest or BGH.

They mostly like it and enjoy watching VODs as well. Most of 'em tried it but kinda gave up after a while, I'm the only one who consistently plays (played) it.

"Scu" (sc) is a cult around me and some of my friends. All our other friends, male or female, who don't actively play are familiar with it simply because we keep talking about it all the time. I think their general attitude is amusement mixed with exasperation.
e.g. hanging out with some of my non-sc-playing friends at a hookah bar, over thanksgiving break:
me: guys, I have to go soon.. I gotta go to this uh... scu party. friends: wtf, why do you have to go, now we can't play cards, and we're only back for the next few days me: uh... i dunno, we've been planning this for ages *general rolling of eyes and exasperation ensues*

This is true, unless they actually play it they'll just never understand. I've been asked why I still play it and why I'm not bored of it by people and I just ask them why footballers or tennis players never get bored of football or tennis.
I have had a number of people that have seen me playing it and were just like "that game looks fucking cool" or "I wish I could someday be as good as you at this game even though I've never seen it before now" lol. I also have a couple of friends that play and watch VODs and most others have shown slight interest in watching games

I told my coworkers about my trip to Paris last year for StarCraft 2. They were all pretty jealous. Now whenever they ask me what I'm doing on the weekend, I tell them I'm gonna be building pylons...

Me: You play starcraft? Person: Nah, warcraft is way better then that game Me: ahh warcraft is cool but its to slow Person: Starcraft is to slow .... Me: By the time it takes me to make a grunt in warcraft i could already be attacking with my first group of marines. Person: thats cause you suck Me:
+ Show Spoiler + Me: Starcraft thats a fun game Person: why dont u play warcraft its better Me: have you even played starcraft? Person: no but warcraft has better graphics :3

I've been able to convert a few people to SC... I always warn them about how hard of a road it will be to even get decent and they say "Don't worry, I'm dedicated" after watching some progamers...
They all quit after 1-2weeks and going 2-50...
I've had the typical pfft the graphics are bad come play DoTA/DoW with us..
My typical response is "What are graphics? Is that a gameplay mechanic?"

Some at university play(ed) it from time to time, but they don't want to play with me .
My best friend doesn't want to play it for some reason, probably because its freaking hard to do everything at once and he hates playing me (but he also didn't want to 2v2)
Most of my friends aren't gamers, so they don't play, but they know it and know that its a good game :D
Random people either don't know it or think it is a good classic game. People I've shown the Starcraft scene to usually go like "this is crazy" or "so they do nothing but play computer all day?". But they get the point when I talk about NaDas salary and Boxers fans.

I had a lot of free time at work, so I would bring my laptop in and watching some games while working. Haha, if there's a stigma against playing video games in the United States, imagine what it's like when you're watching a VOD.
friend: So... you're not actually playing this game. You're watching someone else play a game. 0_0 me: Yup, they're really good. friend *walks away*

I don't usually tell people I play SC, but my close friends know I do, and when SC2 comes out they're all gonna be playing.
My bf wants to say something:
Did the same thing. In the end, my result was the exact opposite. Before, my gf thought sc was no good. When she watches me play and i try to explain it, i got the usual rxn anyone would get. Then I somehow got her to promise me that she'll allow me to teach her at least the very basics of the game. It wasn't easy, she'd throw tantrums when she lost to the computer or when I start to tell her everything she needs to be doing. I decided after a while that I should teach her the passion of the game instead of making her a gamer.
Good thing I got a lot of things helping me: a.) Progaming - I would always hang around at her place and watch pro games. She never paid attention before, but when she had nothing better to do, she did. I was pleasantly surprised that she was quite impressed. I think the very first game she saw was Best's comeback against Luxury in the Ever08 OSL semis (she plays protoss). b.) Bisu - nuff said. c.) TL - This really sealed the deal. The articles, recaps, live reports, hype threads, polls: all you need to get and stay addicted. She even created this TL account. She kept asking me whether she should create one. I said it's up to her (I was just having fun making a bet with myself how long she could last until she eventually creates one). TL Rocks!!
Anyways, just to give you an idea -- I don't even need one of those things that alarm in my computer when there's an important match coming up. I have my gf. In fact, she would probably kill me if I missed an SKT game or a starleague final. Oh yeah, and she mentioned she had that laptop wallpaper of progamers -- no kidding...

I recall going to a LAN place in a nearby city late last year with a few friends, and we found they had Brood War installed on the PCs. Everyone in the room was sucked into Counter Strike, World of WarCraft, DotA or several other randomly assorted titles. When we began playing , surprisingly we actually drew quite a bit of attention.
The one I can remember clearly from the other side of the room was;
"Yo, they're playing SC!" (In an excited tone)
