Which is why I would strongly advice against it in this case. Couchsurfing and Hospitalityclub are places of travel and cultural exchange. They are not for freeriding a place to sleep just because you are to cheap to pay for a room.

A lot of fraternities/sororities rent out rooms for reallllly cheap over the summer, you could check into that. If not, post a notice on a community board or in your school newspaper. A lot of people rent houses/apartments year round but go home for the summer, and are willing to rent out their place cheap just to help with rent while they are gone.
A far as showers, try a local swimming pool. Usually admission is just a couple bucks or they will let you shower for free. Even better, most schools have at least one gym and locker room with showers accessible to students for free.
If you're looking for cheap ways to eat, go with canned or boxed foods like Zatarains. A box of their black beans and rice, for example, only costs a little above a dollar at Winco, rice and beans together make a complete protein which will keep you full and give you energy, and you can get a couple meals out of each box. Surprisingly enough, canned things like spagghettios are pretty good for you too, and only cost about 80 cents per can. Eggs are an almost perfect protein, and you can get a dozen for a little over a dollar. Throw some cheap cheese in there and you've got yummy scrambled eggs. Shop at places like Winco and grocery outlet instead of Safeway or eating out...and avoid foods like ramen that seem to fill you up but have no nutritional value. Don't forget to eat fruits and vegetables, too...or you'll get scurvy or something. Just buy the ones that are in season and on sale. If you want some living on a budget recipe ideas...hit me up. I am an experienced starving college student lol.

Heh, too bad you're not living here, all student dorms/studios/appartments are rent free June-July but most people go home for the summer anyway.
First thought in my head too was couch surfing, and I don't agree that you can't use it for something like this. I don't know how much things cost there, or how much money you'll actually have, but if you can't get enough money to rent your own place (some cheap room summer only as some people already mentioned) couchsurfing can really help. And it is very legit...
God I hate being a poor student >_<

That homeless blog is quite amazing. Practical advice along with a few philosophical insights on society and homelessness. I think if we all read it we'd all be a bit more empathetic to the homeless people we see in our lives.

Depending on your major there are quite a few research type jobs at universities that will offer room and board over the summer so you could try and look into one of those. Also you could consider working at a overnight camp as you would get paid and have a place to stay over the summer.

Would it be possible for you to get a job now till the summer? Then you'd have some cash and maybe you could rent a spot for a month or two and maybe work somewhere else for cash.

Hey, I think I remember you go to school in west philly? If I remember correctly, there are a lot of summer sublets for $300ish, and that's definitely affordable if you grab a low-paying summer job... Maybe if you pick up a research position that'd be even easier?
