Acceptance means you've been accepted. That means these are all the schools these guys got into, not necessarily that they've told they're going to be register in.

Brown University - I get to wait until mid-may... three cheers for transfer applicants!

I remember visiting caltech when I was looking at colleges. didn't wind up applying (not a shot in hell I'd have gotten in anyway) but it seems like a pretty sweet place. only 900 students O.o so yeah pretty hard to get in...

Yeah I basically applied because I was also going to apply to MIT, and the whole rival thing. But then I decided not to apply to MIT yet I already had my Caltech application in anyway, haha.

It surprises me how many people applied to UPENN. I live in Philly (didn't go to college here), and don't really care fore the campus/city, but to each his own.

Grats guys, college admissions are stressful as shit. Battle's not over even when you even get accepted though, you have to apply/get accepted into your department unless it's an open major, and shit gets crazy when you go Pre-med/dental what have you.

Ivy League school with a good undergraduate program = lots of applicants.

UPenn has traditionally had a lot of applicants who want to do business or engineering...

U Rochester - Accepted but have no desire to go at all (even though they are practically showering me with cash incentives... that school is still surprisingly expensive, and it's freezing).
Waiting on like 10 schools or something lol... my parents forced me to apply to about 5 schools that I had no interest in whatsoever, oh well.

Can someone please explain how does it works in USA, here in Chile we have a selection consisting in about 4 different tests, tests are then weighted according to the desired program, and finally people postulate to University. However, you cant postulate to more than 3 different U/programs and the postulation is in order, once youre accepted in one of the U/programs you are automatically excluded from the others.

Haha when I was applying for grad schools I looked at Caltech. The grad students said they never saw the undergrads around campus, like, ever. We crashed an undergrad party though, seemed reasonable enough!

I remember visiting caltech when I was looking at colleges. didn't wind up applying (not a shot in hell I'd have gotten in anyway) but it seems like a pretty sweet place. only 900 students O.o so yeah pretty hard to get in...

:| yeah I still haven't gotten any replies since I'm a transfer, oh except for FRESNO STATE. (lol).

Late March/Early April is generally a rough time for seniors applying for college. Just don't stress, as you'll certainly get in elsewhere. Being able to take a rejection or two is a quality that you'll need for the time.

Anyways, good luck and congrats to those already accepted. Enjoy the remainder of high school though. Fun times are totally fucking awesome.

No college has undergraduate acceptance rates below 8%... so at worst you're 1 out of 12.

edit: Aha I get it ... 250 overall. Well either way, congrats cause its hard to do =)

Bah, will apply next year for University of Copenhagen but almost guaranteed to get in, since all they look at is your highschool GPA average.

How do they filter students for US Colleges?

Yea, sorry for that one . I screwed that one up, just wanted to be funny and stuff. I meant "That" instead of "The", my bad, thought some MIT/Caltech students would join in for the flame (I'm evil, yes).

I'm waiting for the decision, but being an international student without all the glamor of International Olympiads and other stuff like that I can't really believe I'll strike lucky the second time (plus, I'm a noob terran).

As for Caltech admission rate, they accept around 600ish people (this year 669) and usually a third of this number actually goes there, since the rest chooses other places.

This thread leads me to draw the conclusion that a lot of you are choosing fields you're already good at or you concider "easier" than other options.

Maths = easy in highschool, crutching on that & ignoring other subjects 'cause you're smart enough to already know your destiny ---> number crunching through as fancy a college as possible to get to numbercrunch at the highest pay possible?

Sorry, but isn't this all slightly self limiting and narrow minded even? I realilze some people aspire to strive for excellence in one field, but isn't it way early to pick which one?

I've always done the exact opposite, when i feel something is easy and unchallenging, i explore other academic branches where i know i've struggled earlier.

I went to a "profiled class" in junior high, focusing on maths & science, got grades enough for any highschool - chose a social sciences line with a focus on history & languages. After that, instead of "sealing the deal" with law, economics, litterature or diplomacy, i looked at fields in which i'd concider myself weaker and chose medicine as my current pursuit.

I know medicine & "technology" (engineering, physics, pure maths, CS) are both very broad fields, but say you've been angled towards either (or something else) throughout your life - wouldn't it benefit you more to choose the other? I think so at least :p

No, what you actually did was realized that doing pure economics/law/literature/diplomacy won't get you any paychecks and decided to follow a career that'll actually feed you.

wow, must be a bother to go through all that application stuff

when i graduated from high school in germany it didn't even occur to me that some universities could be better than others. i just naturally went to the one that was closest to me, like (almost) everyone else did.

i never knew about the competition among universities in other parts of the world before i learned about korea and came to teamliquid.

That's going a bit far to say it doesn't matter, especially since going to a good undergrad school certainly helps in getting into good graduate schools too. Of course it's not the end of the world if you don't go to an Ivy league school either.
Of course, you only live one life, and you make all your mistakes, and learn what not to do, and that’s the end of you.

For those of you who got into Penn or are interested in Penn, I just wanted to put myself out there. I'm currently a junior here at Penn studying finance, real estate, and computer science, and I have to admit it's been quite a blast. For a supposedly top academic school, people here really know how to have fun. There are so many opportunities here that make the whole Penn experience very awesome. If any of you have any questions about Penn feel free to shoot me a PM, and I'll try to get back to you ASAP.

Oh and Klogon (admin from a while ago) also goes to Penn, though I think he hardly visits TL anymore. There are probably also a few other TL'ers here as well from what I remember.

I saved the most important fact for last. Yes, if you come to Penn, you will still have time to play starcraft =].

I also attend penn. I am a senior with a finance major, and if you have questions about the campus/school feel free to PM.

There's a lot of awesome stuff to do on campus, and most people are really fun. I also take part in running our outdoors club, so you should come for that =). We've gone skydiving, surfing, skiing, shooting, rock climbing, hiking, camping, etc. http://www.pennoutdoors.org

TBH in america high school should end at grade 10 but we have some obsession with making kids go to school until they are 18 so we can kick them out.

Well it's true in America there is a problem, at least in my opinion. Too many people go to college. There are tons of jobs that require no college education that college graduates have to do anyway because there aren't enough white-collar jobs for everyone.

This thread has opened up my eyes to a valuable insight into the world of living populations in areas. There are more posters in this thread from Fairfax, VA than I thought lived in the county.

He was probably refering more to the fact that Belgium currently has a right winged governement (afaik) and that your pop estimate was off with about 500 %.

I got into MIT back in the day (8 years ago) but decided not to go, just didn't fit me very well. I was much happier going to Notre Dame.

hrmmm, i am having a tough time believing this.

Why so skeptical? Besides the fact that Harvard eliminated their early admissions a few years ago, and usually comes out with all the other Ivies on the same date in early April.

For those waiting with bated breath for acceptance or rejection from your choice school, I just want to give the perspective of an "old" timer (well, old in comparison with modern BW players) to mollify the nervous hours.

Within reason, it doesn't matter much where you go for your undergrad years, whether your aim be industry or academia. If you are ambitious, view college as a chance to prove yourself and to find what excites you intellectually; rather than a challenge that you must overcome in order to get a token of approval. In this information age, records of your extracuricular achievements can be broadcast to the world, and they matter a lot: I haven't a doubt that Dries Buytaert (who developed Drupal while in college) would find any problem at all with employment upon graduation, whatever his grades or school might have been. It is only if you do nothing significant outside of class, that your record becomes critical.

And if you want to continue into academics or research, undergraduate by itself means quite little. Wherever you go, find a professor whose field interests you, and offer your help--which at the beginning may be not much more than a pair of hands and eyes--on her research. Her recommendation when you graduate, and the tangible achievements, perhaps papers, then accompanying your resume, will help tremendously in finding a sponsering graduate-school professor. And having a professor on your side when you apply to top graduate schools will do more than you might imagine in getting in. After all, the reputation of schools turns on the quality of the research they produce, not on having a lot of "good grade" students.

In summary, you will rise or fall to where your effort and ability combined place you in the echelon of things, wheresoever you start that first insignificant year of your first school.

My own background comprises MIT BS and MEng in CS, and while I have no complaints about how things turned out for me afterwards, I see now, looking back, that I could have gotten so much more out of the time I had. In Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Pirsig writes that students who are in college for the first time will never appreciate it; and ironically, or prophetically, I read that book my freshman year there, and yet still didn't appreciate it. The chant of the old: "If I could only do it again..."

So do just accept it as it comes, and relax by pwning some n00b like me in BW.

I would quote what jpavel said but its right ^ there. I would have to say I disagree somewhat with you on the fact that undergraduate means little. I think your choice of school does not limit you from going to the best of graduate schools or getting the best jobs, but I think that getting good grades and learning and lot and making the most out of the academic side of your undergraduate life is extremely important, and needs to be balanced against the other aspects of college life that you should appreciate too. With a high GPA, and one or two good recommendations, you're far more likely to get into whatever lab or internship you want, which is a great stepping stone for your future paths. Without those intermediate steps its hard to make the jump into whatever you eventually want to do.

Wonder if anyone from tl goes to caltech it's very rare to get accepted to there.

7 pages too late, but nosliw and I go to Caltech. Some others from here also visit this site but don't have accounts (har har I don't even post much on TL).

And that's totally not cool. I believe the banner read "The ONLY Institute of Technology" ... but good luck tomorrow hearing back from them, if you get in you should come.

Actually "That other institute of technology" is correct. >
Some caltech students went over to MIT and did a bunch of pranks and one of the pranks was that banner. MIT was quick to respond though and replaced the banner with "the only institute of technology." You would do well in caltech, klizzer :p

edit:
To jpavel's post. Yeah I actually agree with this alot. Going to such a top school like caltech will just make you work really hard and you could get close to the same end results if you work just as hard at another school and find good profs etc. imo going to someplace like caltech or MIT will only really put you ahead when you have a huge amount of ambition for your future (then again, someone with so much ambition could probably do well without having to attend top schools).

CMU has a CSL team so you could contact their team leader or whatever. Damn, nosliw might be leaving caltech for CMU grad school making us loose one of our best players to CMU Heh, I guess proleague teams occasionally loose their players to other teams too (forGG).

I think it's just because caltech admissions are alot more straight forward than MIT admissions. There are ALOT of people at MIT that would never get into caltech, and alot of people at caltech that would never get into MIT. That's why you should apply to MIT and caltech simultaneously.

That's a bad idea though, you never know where you might end up in your grad school years, and the academic circle is surprisingly small...Antagonizing a big and well known school is never a good idea...

Community College isn't for high school fuck ups. Its for people who want to save huge money on university prices for their first two years in college, and then transfer in to whatever university they want.

seriously, i had to pay $350 for 15 units/5 courses D;

and i'm also kinda apathetic about school in general right now so... i'd be wasting even more money. maybe it's just the community college atmosphere that does that to you.

for those who haven't decided on which college to pick (meaning you HAVE choices), i'd recommend looking into weather, surrounding environment, etc. and not just school rank. that is i'd recommend against going to schools near ghetto, out in the nowhere, forest, etc. a lot of my friends seem to realize the importance of this in my school anyway, especially if ur a fob :D

Well the top schools, Stanford included, is doing a blind-need financial grant where if you get in, you're automaotically given like 90% of the money you need.

i honestly think school rank/prestige reflects well on its student body and place greater importance on such things than things like weather/city. i would look more at campus culture (fratty vs geeky) and campus architecture, if it looks good to you.

Engineering at U of T > engineering @ UW

UW has a world renowned math program, so if you're taking math = UW
but U of T has a world renowned rank.... Which campus are u at? and wat residence??

If you guys think that past a certain level, there's going to be any discernable difference between what you learn at an undergraduate level based upon ranking... you're in for a huge surprise.

As a person who's been through this and is now about to attend graduate school, I would highly recommend finding the school that will provide you with the most fun, fulfilling experience that your four year's time can possibly provide.

You don't look at overall rankings, you look at department/major rankings for undergraduate schools.

Ooooo

New College eh? You're the first person I've ever seen set New College as the first choice lol.
There are smart people in all the colleges so no hate coming from me. But I heard the res social life is really lame at New College 'cause most of the students are international students who stick to themselves and don't really invest much into res community party life or whatever.

But I forgot you're doing Engineering, no time to fuck around anyway, lol.

ok so you're straight up engineering.. ok.. cause i didn't know if there was a difference between engineering and engineering science. i'm taking quantitative analysis, so i'm not really in your area, but i have friends in engineering if you have any questions.

I think any life sci would be hardcore, because of the competition for med school.

Lulz, my bad, I'm not familiar with California schools, I guess. I only wanted to go to Duke so I only applied to two state schools (Indiana and Purdue) and Duke. Didn't even explore elsewhere, mainly for weather/climate reasons.

i dunno much about eng sci at UofT, but i know chemeng in waterloo is pretty hot with co-op and all. i think UofT still has that extended one-time co-op thing though? which is also great, although nothing's really stopping you from taking longer than 4 month commitments in UW either.

if i were an engineer, i'd be able to offer more info i guess, but i only know what my engi friends tell me

p.s. waterloo has a world renowned math program? really? do you mean grad? i thought for undergrad, we were famous for computer (MIT of the north and all that) and our pre-Macc stuff.

ya waterloo has a very good math program, even at the undergrad level. They're one of the largest centers for math in the world. (apparently) although thats not a surprising fact.

what's MIT famous for? what's UW famous for? MIT is to US what UW is to CA (supposedly. i don't agree, but w/e). it's just drawing a comparison, nobody's equating anything.

Northwestern's decisions are out. Definitely out. Although there have been reports of issues if you have a Yahoo email account.

I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

Even if ALL the black people at UCSD were at marshall, it would be like maybe 2-3 people. lol.

Your so racist lol...

Marshall has the best dining hall you know, so you should consider yourself lucky. I'm a freshman at Revelle right now and I can recommend that no one who enjoys good food come here T_T

Also Revelle GEs are terrible.

Any more waiting for Stanford in tha house? I think it's this Wednesday, April 1st, 5 PM Pacific. Am I right?

I hope they don't send me a letter congratulating me on being accepted, and then, at the bottom of the letter- "April Fools! You were rejected!"

Don't want to sound nitpicky but it's Washington University in St Louis or Wustl for short, not University of Washington St Louis. I already graduated from college and am pretty much finishing up my medical school interview season. Anyone in the same boat? Btw, David Geffen Med Woot! 40K in loans double woot! 10 years of slaving away without sleep triple woot! Btw, Stanford has now rejected me twice, once for college and for medical school. Ah Stanford what could've been...

ucla/uc berkeley/duke

Pros and cons:
1) UCLA: cheap, hot girls (pending on how you look), great weather, awesome Korean scene, good reputation, very competitive though.
2) Berkeley: cheap, ugly girls (but easier to get!), nice weather, diverse, better reputation than UCLA although not by much, very competitive
3) Duke: prestigious, bit more expensive, not sure about girls, bad weather, not California

result: Go to UCLA if you're good looking. Go to Berkeley if you're into academics. Go to Duke if you really really care about that ranking from US news or if they offer you sick scholarship.

Yea, it's like a private school then and given the economy probably more expensive. I've lived in Cali all my life so I sometimes forget that not everyone's a Cali resident...

one reason to go east coast/prestigious is to broaden your horizons and take on a bigger world. go east coast and work in new york's biggest firms and go head to head with the nation's brightest and the richest.
duke is way more expensive than UCs btw. 50k vs 30k. although duke would probably give more financial aid than the UCs. and it doesn't have california weather, but it's pretty southern and sunny. you wont ever see 3 feet snow like in Yale.

The best is getting waitlisted twice by the school you thought was you're shoe-in, then rejected, then accepted a month before the semester starts after you already went to orientation at another school.

I am willing to give someone admission to some of my universities so Fantasy can win Friday's OSL. Just throwing that out that there.

What were some of your stats that got accepted to MIT? I contemplated applying to their college of engineering but they require 2 years of calc/physics and my school only offers 1 year of calc and 0 of physics (I had to take a class online to apply to U of Mich)

I had 3.7 GPA (unweighted), 29 ACT (31 Math), class VP, bball/football team captain, cabinet member of various clubs, exhausted most of my schools hardest classes by my junior year (not saying much...), some community service (not much)... how do you guys that applied/got accepted think I would have faired?

Would probably get smashed. Bloody difficult year; even in a 'normal' year it'd be a good-but-not-great app.

Unless you have some amazing hook/something that doesn't fit into those stats, eh.

for you, it would probably depend on how much you stressed your sports
a guy at my school who was barely in the top 10% got into MIT through track alone

Still can't decide. Florida is the better overall school and uh...national champs anyone? But UCF has a pretty good computer science program and their programming team has been in the top 3 in the southeast for the past 23 years.

yea i already withdrew from the accepted colleges. (I mean, if i dont pay the deposit by a date, is it automatically assumed that i will not enrol, or do i have to explicitly cancel the acceptance?)

that isn't the same thing as withdrawing, you were supposed to mail the colleges with letters of withdrawl before they even replied with a decision.

oh well too late now i guess

Hmm.. the thing is all the acceptances came at the same time, since i applied for ED and Early Action at the same time. So if i let the enrolment deposit deadline lapse, would they automatically just strike off my name?)

From Umich:
All students admitted for the Fall 2009 who would like to commit to enroll must postmark their enrollment deposit by Friday, May 1 or submit an electronic check payment by May 1, midnight EST.

Well at least, that's what I gather from the wording from above.

Basically what I learned last year is that college applications are maddeningly arbitrary - there are always the people you see and think "HE got in THERE?!" and you it doesn't make sense at all to you and it feels unfair. Basically, you just have to apply to enough colleges so that statistically you'll get into at least one decent one. I'm thankful that my results turned out okay, though I didn't get into my first choice.

The lack of an explanation is what makes thinking back on it a nightmare. What if I had done better in that one class? Would that change in my GPA make the difference? What if I had changed this word in this essay? The fact that you'll never know makes it completely open ended. I remember realizing though, if they did give me reasons, I probably would have just disagreed with their reasons mentally. Think about it this way: if you DESERVE to be in, but didn't get in, then sooner or later you'll accomplish the same things anyway, because it's just part of who you are.

xhumin i totally agree with you now. I have been thinking about it, and how i could have taken 1 less ap or something and gotten an a in an easy class and i could have done better in french and all this stuff but it doesn't really matter now. I just made sure i applied to enough schools to where i gave myself enough of a chance to be chosen. i thankfully got into Cornell after getting waitlisted 4 times haha. But your insight is definitely right, you can always accomplish something later on.

I'm definitely not paying full tuition for UC's , plus i got rejected from the one i wanted to go to so im gonna go in state

currently picking between UT austin and texas tech, for the money, friends, etc.

i like texas tech more because of a robotics competition that was hosted there... it was pretty
and it was snowing, etc. community seemed really nice

and UT austin has better credentials

I was gonna post this a couple months ago but u guys are so intimidating with your
Harvard MIT Princeton Yale Stanford Columbia D:

UT austin- accepted
Texas Tech- accepted

Hmm.. Anyone heard of how the Computer Science program is like in Carnegie Mellon? I heard its tons tough =/ so I'm hoping someone here has some prior experience, heh.

Just found this thread cus of bumps I guess. I'm doing CS @ CMU and it's pretty hard. It's very theory-heavy and requires a good deal of work, which I'm not too used to. I just finished up my freshman year and got my first C ever. It's a good environment though, and I'm glad I came here. A smaller campus means that you have much better opportunities to meet people and network. CS is also very prestigious here, so companies know that when they hire people.

I never understand this. Come back and post when you get the degree, that will impress.

Too many 20-somethings brag about the awesome college they dropped out of.

Not rly it's just that calculus is not mandatory to learn in highschool. It is an elective, and most schools don't look at it anyways. I took the course just for pure fun and to see what 1st year course are like so I didn't put much effort into it. But waterloo is weird sincei t actaully requires you to take calculus.

study 12 hours a day. My cousin goes there and hes learning/doing a shit ton there, he has to study for hours upon hours every day to get acceptable grades. Then again he's probably getting a 4.0 and making it seem like hes getting a 2.0 because he's humble.
Besides, that evanston is a sweet place. campus is beautiful, downtown is real close, and chicago is close as well. and for the med school just go to their website im sure they have requirements or w/e.

Math has many levels of difficulty. There are some problems/concepts that I find incredibly easy to understand and others that I find incredibly hard. And there are both people who find my 'easy' math problems hard and those who find my 'hard' problems easy. So whether someone finds math 'easy' highly depends on both their skill and the difficulty of what they are learning.

Hey I'm at Northwestern right now and tentatively pre-med. I'm in Biomed Engineering right now. I've seen people get by studying the night before and people who study. Just do whatever floats your boat. Evanston is really nice though.

Btw, are you talking about undergrad or the medical school. There isn't really a "medical program" for undergraduates.

Damn. You guys have it hard in US.
Gotta enjoy our free-of-charge education here in Poland (at least this free education is a shitton better than unis you have to pay for in most cases).

Yeah but you all also pay like half your income to government. I guess in the end they balance out

Seems like Cal Poly Slo is too big of an opportunity for me to pass up on Computer Engineering. Employers grasp the concept that Slo is very hands on in their teaching, which translates into better work experience.
