I screwed that one up, just wanted to be funny and stuff. I meant "That" instead of "The", my bad, thought some MIT/Caltech students would join in for the flame (I'm evil, yes). I'm waiting for the decision, but being an international student without all the glamor of International Olympiads and other stuff like that I can't really believe I'll strike lucky the second time (plus, I'm a noob terran). As for Caltech admission rate, they accept around 600ish people (this year 669) and usually a third of this number actually goes there, since the rest chooses other places.

Maths = easy in highschool, crutching on that & ignoring other subjects 'cause you're smart enough to already know your destiny ---> number crunching through as fancy a college as possible to get to numbercrunch at the highest pay possible? Sorry, but isn't this all slightly self limiting and narrow minded even? I realilze some people aspire to strive for excellence in one field, but isn't it way early to pick which one? I've always done the exact opposite, when i feel something is easy and unchallenging, i explore other academic branches where i know i've struggled earlier. I went to a "profiled class" in junior high, focusing on maths & science, got grades enough for any highschool - chose a social sciences line with a focus on history & languages. After that, instead of "sealing the deal" with law, economics, litterature or diplomacy, i looked at fields in which i'd concider myself weaker and chose medicine as my current pursuit. I know medicine & "technology" (engineering, physics, pure maths, CS) are both very broad fields, but say you've been angled towards either (or something else) throughout your life - wouldn't it benefit you more to choose the other? I think so at least :p

No, what you actually did was realized that doing pure economics/law/literature/diplomacy won't get you any paychecks and decided to follow a career that'll actually feed you. ^_^

Within reason, it doesn't matter much where you go for your undergrad years, whether your aim be industry or academia. If you are ambitious, view college as a chance to prove yourself and to find what excites you intellectually; rather than a challenge that you must overcome in order to get a token of approval. In this information age, records of your extracuricular achievements can be broadcast to the world, and they matter a lot: I haven't a doubt that Dries Buytaert (who developed Drupal while in college) would find any problem at all with employment upon graduation, whatever his grades or school might have been. It is only if you do nothing significant outside of class, that your record becomes critical. And if you want to continue into academics or research, undergraduate by itself means quite little. Wherever you go, find a professor whose field interests you, and offer your help--which at the beginning may be not much more than a pair of hands and eyes--on her research. Her recommendation when you graduate, and the tangible achievements, perhaps papers, then accompanying your resume, will help tremendously in finding a sponsering graduate-school professor. And having a professor on your side when you apply to top graduate schools will do more than you might imagine in getting in. After all, the reputation of schools turns on the quality of the research they produce, not on having a lot of "good grade" students. In summary, you will rise or fall to where your effort and ability combined place you in the echelon of things, wheresoever you start that first insignificant year of your first school. My own background comprises MIT BS and MEng in CS, and while I have no complaints about how things turned out for me afterwards, I see now, looking back, that I could have gotten so much more out of the time I had. In Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Pirsig writes that students who are in college for the first time will never appreciate it; and ironically, or prophetically, I read that book my freshman year there, and yet still didn't appreciate it. The chant of the old: "If I could only do it again..." So do just accept it as it comes, and relax by pwning some n00b like me in BW.

Actually "That other institute of technology" is correct. > Some caltech students went over to MIT and did a bunch of pranks and one of the pranks was that banner. MIT was quick to respond though and replaced the banner with "the only institute of technology." You would do well in caltech, klizzer :p edit: To jpavel's post. Yeah I actually agree with this alot. Going to such a top school like caltech will just make you work really hard and you could get close to the same end results if you work just as hard at another school and find good profs etc. imo going to someplace like caltech or MIT will only really put you ahead when you have a huge amount of ambition for your future (then again, someone with so much ambition could probably do well without having to attend top schools).

duke is way more expensive than UCs btw. 50k vs 30k. although duke would probably give more financial aid than the UCs. and it doesn't have california weather, but it's pretty southern and sunny. you wont ever see 3 feet snow like in Yale.

Basically, you just have to apply to enough colleges so that statistically you'll get into at least one decent one. I'm thankful that my results turned out okay, though I didn't get into my first choice. The lack of an explanation is what makes thinking back on it a nightmare. What if I had done better in that one class? Would that change in my GPA make the difference? What if I had changed this word in this essay? The fact that you'll never know makes it completely open ended. I remember realizing though, if they did give me reasons, I probably would have just disagreed with their reasons mentally. Think about it this way: if you DESERVE to be in, but didn't get in, then sooner or later you'll accomplish the same things anyway, because it's just part of who you are.

I'm definitely not paying full tuition for UC's , plus i got rejected from the one i wanted to go to so im gonna go in state currently picking between UT austin and texas tech, for the money, friends, etc. i like texas tech more because of a robotics competition that was hosted there... it was pretty and it was snowing, etc. community seemed really nice and UT austin has better credentials I was gonna post this a couple months ago but u guys are so intimidating with your Harvard MIT Princeton Yale Stanford Columbia D: UT austin- accepted Texas Tech- accepted

I heard its tons tough =/ so I'm hoping someone here has some prior experience, heh. Just found this thread cus of bumps I guess. I'm doing CS @ CMU and it's pretty hard. It's very theory-heavy and requires a good deal of work, which I'm not too used to. I just finished up my freshman year and got my first C ever. It's a good environment though, and I'm glad I came here. A smaller campus means that you have much better opportunities to meet people and network. CS is also very prestigious here, so companies know that when they hire people.

Canada has a weird idea of engineering, ha ha. Not rly it's just that calculus is not mandatory to learn in highschool. It is an elective, and most schools don't look at it anyways. I took the course just for pure fun and to see what 1st year course are like so I didn't put much effort into it. But waterloo is weird sincei t actaully requires you to take calculus.

Then again he's probably getting a 4.0 and making it seem like hes getting a 2.0 because he's humble. Besides, that evanston is a sweet place. campus is beautiful, downtown is real close, and chicago is close as well. and for the med school just go to their website im sure they have requirements or w/e.

There are some problems/concepts that I find incredibly easy to understand and others that I find incredibly hard. And there are both people who find my 'easy' math problems hard and those who find my 'hard' problems easy. So whether someone finds math 'easy' highly depends on both their skill and the difficulty of what they are learning.

Hey I'm at Northwestern right now and tentatively pre-med. I'm in Biomed Engineering right now. I've seen people get by studying the night before and people who study. Just do whatever floats your boat. Evanston is really nice though. Btw, are you talking about undergrad or the medical school. There isn't really a "medical program" for undergraduates.

Fall of 2010 Acceptances BEGINS HERE. UC Berkeley - Waiting UCLA - Denied UCSD - Denied UCSB - Waiting UCI - Waiting UCSC - Accepted! Cal Poly Slo - Accepted! Cal Poly Pomona - Accepted! San Diego State - Accepted! San Jose State - Accepted! CSU Long Beach - Accepted! Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute - Waitlisted?! Colorado School of Mines - Denied University of the Pacific - Accepted! Hofstra University - Accepted! Drexel University - Accepted! All were applied to under Computer Engineering except for CSU Long Beach for Audio Engineering 3.42 unweighted 3.61 weighted 1890 SAT 750 Math II, 690 Bio 30 ACT Composite, 36 Math average extra-curriculars Seems like Cal Poly Slo is too big of an opportunity for me to pass up on Computer Engineering. Employers grasp the concept that Slo is very hands on in their teaching, which translates into better work experience.
