You know Ted Kaczynski thought that too.

not too surprised tho, I remember reading a couple years ago some prediction stating it would be possible to like, upload brain content to an external harddrive within 15-20 years or something. this is a big step along that route. ;p

The article is for real btw, here's the link for the abstract in the journal : http://www.cell.com/neuron/abstract/S0896-6273(08)00958-6 I don't know this journal, but it has a pretty high impact factor, so it must be a reference in the field. There's still a long way to go, but what they have already achieved is pretty amazing. Cell, along with Nature and Science is one of the main scientific journals in the world (I'm a bachelor biochemistry and a master biology). That said, as told by other, yes this is real. And yes, this is also far, far away from implanting images in someone's mind or even reading's someone's mind. To try and explain how this works a bit. The brain is divided into parts, where each part has it's own ability. This goes for big parts, like the visual cortex, which obviously regulates sight, as well as for small parts. fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) allows someone to look at blood flow in the brains. When a region becomes active more blood will flow to that region. Now that fMRI has become more and more advanced it allows you to look at increasingly smaller parts of the brain. That is why right now it is able to differentiate between the blood flow that occurs when looking at the letter A as compared to when looking at the letter I. This is ofcourse far far away from mind-reading or even understanding more complex thoughts or dreams. That doesn't mean ofcourse that this isn't a huge scientific breakthrough.

Look at human rights, democracy, concept of "capitalism," nuclear bomb. In retrospect we may like or dislike them, but from a completely historic, non-normative standpoint, once they happen, they happen. To try to cover the idea up afterwards is probably going to be extremely difficult and end in failure.

OR WILL THEY???O_O | ||

Here's some more sources to get a better handle on what the information that spawned this blog post: The Japanese researcher in question's academic site: http://www.cns.atr.jp/~kmtn/ There are links there to various popular media outlets talking about some of this research. There are also links to PDFs of some of his published work, should you have the technical knowledge to understand any of it. I'm still not sure what this original post is claiming. If anyone feels enlightened, let me know.
