I think the poll is poor in its options and parameters. A German Shepard is a SHEEP HERDING DOG. Hence the name. It is NOT some kind of attack/kill animal. Like Physician is saying, a dog from the mastiff family would be a much worthier opponent. Their jaw power, neck power, and footing is much more impressive than a German Shepard's. A German Shepard is much more in line with pack hunting style of fighting, which is attacking from many angles at once with fast, sharp attacks.

Mastiffs will get down and dirty and scrap it out in true fighting fashion. Not hit and run like pack-hunting. Also, a well trained human is vastly different from your average Joe. I'd take a Muy Thai fighter over nearly any dog. Same with a solid practitioner of Jiujitsu. And probably nearly any other form of martial art if the practitioner is serious and in good physical shape.

Then again, a well-trained fighting dog knows to dodge, duck, and move just as a martial artist. A dog with training will not sit there and bite onto a limb and let its eyes get poked out or let someone fall on them. I don't think I've ever seen a veteran fighting dog act that stupid. They will bite and then TUG very very violently. They don't bite and shake. They bite and tug backwards to knock you off balance. And they will let go and bite you again if they must. If someone tries to drop on top of the dog, the dog will simply sidestep, move back, and bite you in the mf-ing torso.

A mastiff dog has much greater jaw force and will snap bones or pierce arteries. They will also be much less susceptible to getting their jaws ripped in half. Is it still possible? Yes. But it would take an extraordinarily strong man moving at VERY fast speed to pull this maneuver off. A German Shepard has a narrow muzzle and very unimpressive jaw force. They're designed to SNAP at their prey, to slash with their teeth, and move away. Not to clamp down and hold on. They're just not that type of fighter.

Overall though, I put a very well trained human over a very well trained dog. Humans ARE larger and have more angles they can attack from when it comes down to it. Humans are also a lot more intelligent, although in this scenario that doesn't come into play. Not enough variable factors to really "out-think" the opponent. At this close proximity and with this vanilla an environment, it's pretty much all instinct.

Sounds like luck. If you're lucky, that first kick lands and you might be able to keep it away. If you're unlucky, you miss or only glance the dog and he tears a chunk out of you that causes too much pain to deal with.

The only opinions that are really worth reading in here are probably the first-hand experiences. It's just too abstract a situation for the rest of us.

It really is. A couple times I had dogs run up on me and I really fucked them up just with a couple kicks to the head. I would assume that most of the people here could win a fight with any dog, I know I could at least.

I think people are underestimating dogs by a huge margin. You're talking about an animal with great strength throughout its body launching itself toward your upper body and then knocking you down in most cases. And for those saying you could just kick the dog in the head, unless you pin its head between something or have some super human leg strength then I doubt you're going to deter an angry dog from biting the fuck out of your leg.

Either way you'd probably bleed to death even if you won.

Really? Because straight from somebody that had actually fought off dogs was the advice that you should only kick them.

Do you really think that you could just ignore the pain from a German Shepard bite? This is like a bale of hay with a full set of canines hanging off of your arm.

Okay I chose human because I figured I could just gauge the dog's eyes outs, considering this would be an average joe vs. an average mutt German Sheppard but after reading Egoldman's post, I guess I'd reconsider and choose a dog. But Egoldman, if you're saying that a Mastiff dog would be a worthier opponent, you would then have to find a worthier "breed" of an opponent from the human race like some Mongols or god knows what.
