I've been bitten and had to have some stitches on my arm. I've been chased several several time with one time he had my shirt torn off. With that, I think in a life and death situation, I would win unless the dog somehow gets me on my back.

Getting on top of a dog is the way. Bigger dogs imobilze a limb with one bite. Kicking or punching a dog is ineffective unless you pin them down or corner them. Dogs have a different skullstructure then humans. A good punch on a human jaw causes concusion. A dogs jaw is shaped to absorb impact. and a blow to the cranium gets deflected. Some dogs are bred to be wimps but I think most dogs like the wolf can take hits on the head it is the part of the body most exposed to prey fighting back.

Depends on the type of dog. Anything equal to or less than golden retriever I could take down, but man, those fucking newfoundlands are like bears.

dog has more "weapons" etc and probably more agility speed and strength, but human has intelligens. If human can keep his mind calm its possible he could win in a fight.
Kicks and such are probably not a good idea since they will be too slow for the dog.
Think about it, its furious and running towards you jumping up at you.. dogs are freaking fast. You could try to kick it but if u miss your throat and such would be uncovered.
I would try to protect myself by covering all "deadly areas" and let the dog take a bite/grip on something that wouldnt cause a deadly wound and as his head is locked onto some part of me i might be able to pierce one or both of his eyes with my thumb. After that it wouldnt be too hard i think.
edit: but since the avarage human male is pretty stupid and lazy i wouldnt bet on him.

To keep it simple why don't we just say a dog thats the same weight as you. I think most humans beats any animal in close weight proximity.

I think I vote in favour of human here, ive had the pleasure of tangling with a dog, bitten across my face -_-, once when i was 13, given the dog wasnt a gs like ours(Man thoose things can look angry when they play:D) but still not to shabby sizewise comparison to grown and adolesencnt me. nowdays since iam a tad bit bigger could probably deal with a gs. I didnt even know id been biten while the whole tangle was going on and i dont remember what happened, but the dog tokoff with a yelp, it was later showing it was very sad over the whole incident. Its quite possible the dog merly retreated realizing it was attacking a man o_O
(Granted I did have myself to blame since I managed to step on his tail =( )

Lol at some people who think they'll win ez. Being attacked by a dog is pretty much the same as being attacked by a wolf. The only diff is a dog can be domesticated and is less instinctive when it comes to hunting etc. Physically they are equally strong and they belong to the same genus. A large enough dog that's intent on killing you will do so or at the very least leave u pretty damn fucked up, then in which case you'd probably bleed to death. If the human is prepared, he's got a chance. In a surprised attack it's no re.

what gives humans an edge and what we have over most dogs is WEIGHT.
there's not a lot of inernet badasses here who think killing a german shepard is easy; well, it's not.
however, it most certainly is possible, and i would say doable for the average male.
pin the dog down with your weight advantage and hit it with your fists, knees, elbows, choke if possible etc.
a dog's body is soft and can not take the blunt punishment that a human 2x it's weight can dish out.
you will get fucked up in the process but the dog will be dead.

i voted human a while back but i'm starting to think the dog would win. especially after watching those trained dogs like jumping cars. also average man is probably a pos. honestly, i still think i could beat a dog though, when i play fight my dog he normally gets owned.
