for example. I'm Chinese and studies at an Australian Uni. I had to put up with people who think that 99% of Chinese kids here are spoiled brats and children of corrupted officials with too much money on their hands. Do you call that xenophobia too? | ||

" Yeah, good point, I would call that attitude at least partially based on xenophobia and just, plain ignorance. Unfortunately there's mis-representation in every country and western countries are far worse than Asain countries. It still kinda sucks though when you're on the receiving end of it. I can't give you details but back in NZ I actually made the evening news protesting against a political party's pamphlet that was making unfair statements about Asian immigrants. I received cards from many chinese who were grateful that I had taken a stand. It was a humbling experience. I'm also really grateful about the treatment I've had in Korea particularly considering I earn more than a lot of Korean graduates and it must be annoying for them to see a foreigner getting paid more than them. Eventually the level of English will be high enough here that they won't need anymore foreigners and I'm fine with that. I'm only planning to be here til the end of next year and then I'm going home to teach high-school English. I guess I just didn't want this thread to degenerate into a bunch of 'lol English teachers are faggots' from a bunch of high-school kids who don't know what the fuck they're talking about, but then I guess I shouldn't take the TL general forum too seriously. | ||

That was an exaggeration. If I were to come up with a true figure, I'd say 58% douchebag. My apologies. As for the flames, You have me confused with a man who talks about shit I have no idea about. I don't. I've met many hakwon teachers in Korea. Korean and non-Korean. I have good friends who are English Teachers in Korea. I once was seeing a girl who made incredible money writing college essays. Hell, MANI is an overseas English teacher (albiet not in Korea) And I think 58% douchebag is a fair number. And if not douchebag, many are aimless and only it in for the money, which takes a real toll on their soul and hurts them other ways. I seen it. I know that it's not exactly peaches and cream to teach English here as a foreigner. I respect those who are here with the respect and the endurance to make it work. That being said, there are many here with the wrong attitude and the wrong motivations. | ||

I hear ya. 58% sounds about right to me too. I've met my fair share of psychopaths and degenerates over here who really shouldn't be anywhere near impressionable young minds. I hope the new criminal background checks weed out some of the worst riffraff. The reason why they had to introduce the new checks is because a Canadian paedophile was discovered to be teaching here at an elementary school! Its something that should have happened a long time ago. ps- If anybody whose reading this has not graduated and are thinking about coming to Korea to teach on a fake degree, I wouldn't. They're taking that kind of thing a lot more serious now. A Canadian who was teaching with a fake degree got busted and had to serve a 6-month prison sentence before being deported. Its not worth it. | ||
