He wants short pieces so posting Rococo Variations is just inane.

...unless you listen to them individually, in which case the point is lost.

I'd recommend some Chopin Etudes. They're short and usually have pretty melodies

When studying I often simply listen to the well-tempered clavier. It consists of 2 x 24 preludes and fugues, mostly within the length you specified of 3-4 minutes. Somehow that kind of music really helps me as it is clearly structured and not meant to create too much tension - it just flows perfectly, without effort.

I _love_ TWTC! I listen to it all the time. I have all of Glenn Goulds Bach piano works, weighing in at 350+ pieces. :D

Some of the best classical style pieces are contained in modern movie scores.

Jurassic park is one of the best.

...and some of the best modern movie scores are plagiarized almost directly from great composers of the past. Jurassic Park (and pretty much any other movie score by John Williams, actually) falls in this category.

Haha yeah, I'm so confused, I think that guy only read half of the first line of the wiki article. SWW is just solo piano. =/

Star wars was pretty much ripped from the planets, in particular Mars, however can you point out which piece Jurassic park rips off?

yeah I know, but it's modeled on lieder, just as parts of Mahler's early symphonies are basically lieder without words. I was being somewhat facetious there.

And TheMusiC is 100% right, if you want to listen to John Williams you might as well just listen to the classical that he blatantly stole from.

Schumann, Schubert, Brahms, and Chopin would be good bets.

Schubert- Impromptu: 7:23
I recommend the Rubinstein interpretation here.

Schumann- Scherzo: 5:03
Here

Brahms- Capriccio: 3:49
Here

star wars imo was actually a pretty original score. memoirs of a geisha supposedly was also pretty good, but i never heard that one.

gladiator is the movie that has music ripped straight from the planets (mars), but that's hans zimmer, not john williams. john williams has definitely written loads of music that isn't original though. the jaws melody is pretty much exactly the opening chords of dvorak 9, and the score to saving private ryan references a lot to aaron copland. there's definitely more (and i know i've heard more), but those are the ones that really jump right out at me. i haven't heard the jurassic park score in long, long time, but i'm pretty sure it's the same deal as the rest of his scores.

if you want a good movie score, listen to the lord of the rings. it has an overload of brass (especially french horn), but it's good nonetheless =P

True the resemblance is something not to be ignored, but on the other hand composers have been doing this for hundreds of years. If anything John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore, Jerry Goldsmith, and others are paying tribute to long passed away greats for a whole new generation. And, lets be honest yes the rhythms and timbres of Mars are very similar to the imperial march theme in Star Wars but by large Star Wars is a gorgeous original.

Also, as a lover of orchestral music I am delighted to see many of my fellow StarCraft players enjoy it as well. May we all fell forever sorry for those who do not enjoy the depth and transcending properties of the Symphony!
