It's more than that. the universities, being the forefathers of the internet, are pretty central in terms of networking. For example, in the UK there is JANET, which is a 100gb/s network specifically for linking universities together. So you're not only living right next to your exchange, your exchange is also a regional exchange.

I mean, really?!? That's not a surprise when you're sharing a line with a few hundred or thousand people. What exactly is the problem? I live in the dormitory, full time, so i have access do academic internet at home, because thsi is my home. The measured values are real. When you have a commercial provider, you also share a big line with thousands of people. Where is the difference? Universities are specifically setup to have ridiculous internet, and it helps that everyone is geographically clustered together on campus. When you have commercial providers, and they have miles upon miles upon miles of feeder lines running all over the place through towns and cities, it will definitely make a difference. Universities are always going to get insane results. I'm more curious about how various commercial companies perform against each other (in my case, specifically for the USA - I'm happy to see my company has most of the highest results).
I think you are generalizing too much. Our dormitory is just basically a tall building with very small flats. We are half a kilometer from one university building - but apart from that, we are quite isolated form the rest, they are just scattered across the city. There is basically no "campus" at all here. There is no pracitcal difference between the dormitory and any other of the large appartement houses out there, wehere the commercial provider wires all the flats and puts one thick fiber from the outside. The technology is very similar.
The real point is that we get the connectivity paid be the goverment though grants. We are diretly connected to the research network that is deisgned to foster data exchange between scientific insititutions. The fact that half the capacity is probably movies, is another thing Actually, at the moment, I am breaking the rules - officialy I am supposed to be using the internet only to do stuff related to the study! - that i consider absurd. I live there, I have no way to get any other internet connection apart from mobile, so am I completely forbidden from using the internet like a normal human being? Luckily, nobody makes a big deal out of that. But some things are absolutely taboo, torrents being a prime example.

I got one test out of about 20 trying to figure out the problem that gave me a sub 1000 Mbps result. I ended up getting 1400+ Mbps result by retesting though. ^^ ![[image loading]](http://www.speedtest.net/result/1661978511.png) Nice...I should apply to Iowa State University just for the internet. lol

Nothing surprising here, Time Warner blows goats, but their latency is usually decent. At most I get 15 Mbps down, 5 up.
Oh how i miss the 50 Mbps I got in the dorms...

7.24 down, .61 up, ping is 29 ms. Pretty typical result for me, paying for 10 down, 1 up, but I don't think I've actually gotten that, which is really annoying. Every now and then my internet fucks up and I get .01 down, .01 up, and over 1000 ms ping, it's incredibly frustrating

30 mb/s down, 2 mb/s up. Videotron, quebec

Service being upgraded in January, from the generously advertised "25/2" to the quite likely also embellished "50/3" option.
