Best Game Music?

Of all of the games that I have played, one's sound-track stands out above the rest.

That game is Unreal Tournament 2004.

Its soundtrack is energizing, 90% up-beat, and suits all the maps well. Given its futuristic setting I hope that SC2's sound-track will be similar.

In addition to being straightup awesome music, it is also tollerable to listen too again and again.

I reccomend Rankin, hyperblast, and morpheus 3 (the beginning is somewhat slow however). However all of songs are very good. Corrugation is also awesome, albeit somewhat funky.

So what do you think about the UT 2k4 sound-track, and what do you guys think this type of music being a possibility in RTS games such as the upcomming SC2.

And last but not least, please share some other awesome game-soundtracks.

Vagrant Story has awesome music.

Xenogears has pretty good music.

Strangely enough I liked the music in Swing Away Golf.

The Final Fantasy games were basically already mentioned (almost all of them).

It's probably impossible to think of them all.

By the way, I think the legality of distributing game music is kind of um, well, questionable. The publishers (or in rare cases somebody else) hold the rights to everything in the game, including the music. They release soundtracks to many of these games, in any case, so I'm sure they'd like to make money off of that. But it's the same as posting a YouTube link or something.

That said, bluelaguna's a good site to find a lot of RPG-related media.

For those interested, elsewhere on the Internet, direct game rips of the music are available, straight from the DVD/CD/cartridge/etc. These would be 100% accurate to the original. And they're also much smaller in size than mp3s, which bluelaguna and other sites host. For example, the file extension for the SNES music rips is SPC, and the extension for Playstation is PSF.

Entire soundtracks in PSF form, for example for Xenogears, should be easy to find. There's one good site (no longer updated) and mirrors which host those. I think SOTN though was never ripped by anyone, though, but many popular ones should be in this better format.

Also, the Unreal Tournament 2004 soundtrack was used in the dyo movie [s2] Zeroes to Heroes - it fit in pretty well there too. The songs he chose were Assault, DM1, Junkyard, Hyperblast-Redux, and Metallurgy

What, I liked Terran 1 (both parts of it). Zerg was the one I couldn't stand.

Also, I liked the P music a lot, but it was soooo quiet. Also I have too many associations to that music from all my actual games =X

Deus Ex hade this awesome ambient/jazz soundtrack made by Alexander Brandon.
I still listen to it every now and then.

My favourites are "Coffee Shop" and "The Synapse (Hong Kong Streets)".

Well my favourites are:

- The Terran song.
- Diablo, tristram song.
- The music of Deus EX like nanoblaze said, it owns ( Hong-kong theme )
- Old UT 99 music ( oshibori_probe said that his favourite is the Ut2004 music but i guess Ut99 > Ut2004 at least for the music ). Thx for the dl link btw ;D
- Baldur's Gate main theme ( SO FUCKING EPIC !!!! )
- Some old console songs ( Zelda " a link to the past " , Marios, Tetris .. ) They are classics.

SC actually has pretty good music

the old SNES game Probotector had really pimp music
Gianna Sisters on the C64, great intro music, probably stolen from somewhere
Kid Icarus, you just can't forget that tune
Super Metroid had fantastic music

not sure about today's games, I cant keep up

I've probably spent thousands of hours listening to the Starcraft battle music (shuffled randomly) as I work.

It's great for that. The themes symbolize construction progress to me.

I prefer to play Metroid music when I'm hunting bugs, though.
I serve my houseguests slices of butter.

Street Fighter Third Strike Music is good. There was a link to DL the tracks as well as sound effects and crap in the long 3s thread towards the end.

Yeah UNATCO is great, wild story: I was once very close to joining the US navy, and I made a CD with nothing but that track. Listened to it for like 4 weeks straight cause I wanted it in my head while I was in basic, it was really inspiring for me. LOL - I went a little crazy, it was in my head all right..

I also really like Lebedev Airfield, Majestic 12, New York, Ocean Lab & DuClare Chateau is really great too - shit - its all great. I was listening to the track Battery Park on 9/11/01 when I happened to turn on the TV and a reporter was live from the actual Battery Park (NY) reporting about the WTC attack.It was my first exposure to the event. Sent a chill down my spine ill never forget. That song will always remind me of that day. In Deus Ex the New York Skyline is devoid of the WTC (pre 9/11) and is explained as a terrorist attack in the game. The reason for this was actually because of graphical limitations of the game engine and they had to cut them out. But its still a wild coincidence. The terrorist attacks in the game (Statue of Liberty was also destroyed by "terrorist") were actually carried out by the US as an excuse to get the peoples backing of a 'war' on the NSF ("terrorist").

By far my favorite single player game experience. I would highly recomend it to anyone who has not expericend the story of the game. Its very sad, very dark, and very adult. Superb Dialogue. Anyway..
