The WHN declares the monkeypox outbreak a pandemic.
TL;DR little action would be required to stop the spread, but that action isn't being taken. The pandemic is going to get a lot worse unless the affected countries take action quickly.

"The outbreak will not stop without concerted global action, it said."

"Even with death rates much lower than smallpox, unless actions are taken to stop the ongoing spread—actions that can be practically implemented—millions of people will die and many more will become blind and disabled, it said."

"There is no justification to wait for the monkeypox pandemic to grow further. The best time to act is now. By taking immediate action, we can control the outbreak with the least effort, and prevent consequences from becoming worse. The actions needed now only require clear public communication about symptoms, widely available testing, and contact tracing with very few quarantines. Any delay only makes the effort harder and the consequences more severe", said Yaneer Bar-Yam, PhD, President of New England Complex System Institute and co-founder of WHN.

What is the World Health Network? I can't find any info about them except this news that they declared the monkeypox a pandemic... so I'm not very impressed. Meanwhile I know more people who have Covid now than at any point previously in the pandemic. These new variants are going to town.

I had to look this one up as well. They do have a website and there is some info there.

The IHR meeting has concluded, the overall consensus is that the monkeypox outbreak is not yet a PHEIC (Public Health Emergency of International Concern).

"While a few Members expressed differing views, the committee resolved by consensus to advise the WHO Director-General that at this stage the outbreak should be determined to not constitute a PHEIC.

However, the Committee unanimously acknowledged the emergency nature of the event and that controlling the further spread of outbreak requires intense response efforts. The Committee advised that the event should be closely monitored and reviewed after a few weeks, once more information about the current unknowns becomes available, to determine if significant changes have occurred that may warrant a reconsideration of their advice."

https://www.who.int/news/item/25-06-2022-meeting-of-the-international-health-regulations-(2005)-emergency-committee--regarding-the-multi-country-monkeypox-outbreak

This decision comes after now over 4100 infections have been reported from over 50 countries, and also 1 death.

My prediction:
+ Show Spoiler +
Total cases are doubling every ~8 days. If no action continues to be taken, there are likely going to be 30-40 thousand cases by the end of July, and potentially 1 million at some point in September.

So how is Covid going in your corners of the world?

Here in Germany the outbreaks are increasing rapidly mainly from festivals, concerts and other events with crowds. Makes me thing we need a mask mandate back for events with crowds. Like 200+ indoors and 1000+ outdoors or something like that. And we are in summer right now!
I guess most cases are not as severe as back in 2020/2021 since most people have at least 2 doses of vax but still

New cases seems to be flaring up all over europe with infections at outdoor events, festivals, concerts, sports events. It's so unfortunate that the immunity seems to have worn off and same with vaccinations

Cases are higher, hospitalizations are higher, deaths are higher and ICU admissions are about the same as this time last year. I'd say not great.

Also Germany here, so could add to that. But:
How do you know, that it is the festivals and stuff? Just this winter we had tests, distance rules, concerts were closed/with mask mandates, ... and cases were _much_ higher! So, how can you connect this?
I admit, this is coming from a person that currently at least once a week goes to a event that is indoor, without masks and no distance. And I'm fine. Also, ok, I had Covid in March (when "everything was closed" ...). That's maybe a point: While I know quite a few in my social circle that get Covid "right know", none of them had it before! (and some of them are still confused, why they don't get it even with constant exposure to people...)

Also: If I look at other European countries, that are "ahead" of us in rising cases - for example Portugal - and check what they did ... oh, "nothing"! Well...
So, overall there is not much going on! Meh!
Call me, when we have the same amount of cases, when we dropped nearly every Covid-precaution.

I agree. Doing nothing is by far the best option at this point, along with updated vaccines for the most vulnerable: exactly what we do with the flu. A strong summer wave could just as well be an advantage for dealing with later waves in a colder climate, when the virus has better conditions and humans are worse at dealing with it.

The tunnel vision on a single virus has caused far too much damage already, especially to our mental health.

Had a big 1000-2000 people company event today.
In a big hall. I feel pretty safe wearing a mask most of times but still don't look forward to the news that multiple people had it today.

It's gonna be home office in the winter again. Which is a shame and makes my work setting up and adjusting processes rather interesting.

Well I've been to a wedding, probably 90% of my friends have caught covid despite 3x boosters. Some (including me) have had rough times with the recovery, with some of the symptoms including fatigue, and a cough taking weeks to a month+ to subside. It's definitely still something to worry about, even as a group of ~30 year olds. We're hoping that it'll be quicker to tune boosters for variants, since we'll pretty much all grab it as soon as it's available this fall. Covid is not a disease than any of us are eager to catch again.

Basically though, we're all back to normal, but very cautious about proactively telling people if we're sick and bailing on activities if we're sick.

Where I am nobody cares about covid anymore. There are still thousands of cases a day but many people don’t bother to get tested they just deal with it.Testing sites are starting to close down now.Vaccine mandates and restrictions are gone.Despite it being mid-Winter things are the most normal they have been since early 2020.

Also: If I look at other European countries, that are "ahead" of us in rising cases - for example Portugal - and check what they did ... oh, "nothing"! Well...

They had one of the highest covid vaccine rates in the world, let alone Europe. So if you have faith in the jab, there should be no reason to talk about cases there.

Personal experience. I know about 15 people who went to different events and and all had Covid 2-3 days later. Most of them work exclusively from home so they didn't get it from work. My logical conclusion was that these events are responsible for most new infections. I don't know anyone who has gotten it from something else right now.
Obviously it doesn't mean every event will get you Covid. It's more that at these events there are people coughing and sneezing left and right and should have stayed at home but didn't because they are stupid and didn't wanna waste money or some other dumb shit

That's not how any of this works. The vaccine doesn't mean you don't get covid and you won't die from covid anyway. The vaccine isnt bad if cases start spreading, especially if we have a sizeable population that is on team covid.

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone get intubated with COVID since omicron became the dominant strain. It’s like a whole different disease. A lot of sources say 2/3rds of COVID hospital admissions are there for another problem and they just happen to have COVID. I honestly think it’s even higher than that.

Nobody has seriously claimed otherwise for well over a year now.

Great, in a population that is over 95% double vaxxed why bother talking about cases again then.

Maybe there is a correlation between the people hyping up case numbers and the people that want to work from home rather than having to go back to the office.

You just did tho. You're dismissing worries about cases because other people got the vaccine.

Or maybe the people that trust science being real that listen to scientists that tell them the higher case rates means more pressure on the hospitals which was the whole reason for the restrictions we've had so far.

If you hate young people so much why not just rip off "no one wants to work" like we all can tell you want to.

Which is a different thing than saying the vaccine stops people getting covid.

Or maybe the people that trust science being real that listen to scientists that tell them the higher case rates means more pressure on the hospitals which was the whole reason for the restrictions we've had so far.

So the vaccine doesn’t stop you getting or transmitting covid, But it’s still supposed to massively reduce the severity of a strain that is already supposedly massively weaker than alpha and delta.Plus it’s midsummer in Portugal, when the dangers of respiratory illness are at it’s lowest.Stop with the fear mongering, Fewer and fewer people care anymore.

If you hate young people so much why not just rip off "no one wants to work" like we all can tell you want to.

It’s a minority but read reddit or twitter and you’d think it was the majority.

For those who like to speak facts and not personal opinions, the following survey is quite recent.
Most Americans are still concerned. 40% still wear masks.
