There is a less than 1% chance Senate Republicans agree to convict and remove Trump, so I wouldn't even bother fantasizing about that scenario. Assuming no successful appeal, that means the federal court will order the National Guard to immediately cease any activities that pertain to posse comitatus. If Hegseth or Trump attempted to override the order, we'd firmly be in a civil war-tier Constitutional crisis because the officers of the NG would have to decide which branch to follow to not undermine their oaths. If Trump was convinced that most National Guardsmen were brainwashed Republican cultists that would slavishly obey him, it is likely he would attempt to override the court. But, considering TACO, he'll probably back down and brag that he won despite the court order. | ||

I get the sense no one here would fight to preserve the constitutional union for the sake of "The American Experiment" if any section of the US wanted to secede. | ||

I think a large part of it is that "the cover-up is bigger than the crime". I honestly think at the beginning of the Epstein scandal, if Trump had come out and said, "Yeah, I banged 15 year olds. So what? The lying media is just jealous and they wish they had too." the majority of his fanbase would give him a pass. As long as his crimes are out in the open, his fans don't care. It's only when he tries to hide his scandals that they turn on him. If it's hidden, then it must be nefarious. If it's out in the open, then it must be fine. Honestly this scenario kind of looks like the best case outcome of the whole thing, let Texas & their merry band of red states in the middle pal around cosplaying "real America" and have California, New York and the rest of the coastal US form a new union. Unfortunately, this would only happen if the current situation keeps spiraling which means that Trump or his chosen successor would be in power. To me, it's been bared very much true during the California "riots" situation when "reasonable" republican Introvert explained how Trump is sending in the troops to "protect the Sovereignty" of USA and compared him to Lincoln that these guys would be very happy to send in the troops to quell down any secessionist sentiments from any of these governors, and given how much "American patriotism" has been ingrained into the vast majority of Americans I fear that even if there was popular support in these states to go their own way most of the rest of the USA would be happy to see them bombed for trying. At that point, the "Civil war" movie is basically how I'd imagine that going, perhaps by the end of it the richer and better organized states would prevail, but the cost would be insane and I doubt whatever is left after it would even want to call it self USA. | ||

I can’t say the US’ policy in general has always been aligned with my politics, but this really is a new level of shitshow. There’s something that would have been a genuine fractious scandal under previous administrations, almost daily. Sometimes more frequently. Sometimes it’s not even that, but just outright something that wouldn’t have happened full stop. We’ve got the admin trying to squash Voice of America and its various offshoots into being functionally useless and incapable of actual journalism. An expansion of restrictions of Palestinian ‘nationals’ to travel to the US, unless they possess another passport. Oh and a Federal Judge ruling that Trump has deployed the National Guard illegally. That’s like, a few articles I dipped into from the last two days. The cadence is scarcely believable and shows few signs of abating any time soon. One quite persistent factor is the sheer, pungent smell of absolute bullshit that tends to spout from Trump or his acolytes in either their given rationales, or response to criticism. It’s completely mental. Now (Iraq obviously, but not exclusively), America, like all other nations was never some paragon of morals and veracity, but the current lay of the land really does feel different. I might not have liked what x American institution was saying at any particular juncture, but I generally believed it to some degree. This epoch is just tinpot dysfunction | ||
