Conspiracy theory alert. Ignore this if you don't like that kind of thing.

Mike Lynch, former CEO of Autonomy, who stood trial in the USA on fraud charges, has gone missing after his yacht sunk just off the Sicilian coast yesterday.

His co defendent in that trial, Stephen Chamberlain, was fatally struck by a car while out jogging, over the week end.

Also the boss of Morgan Stanley is missing from the same incident as Mike Lynch, although this is more likely to a coincidence.

That's the yacht that got taken out by a waterspout, isn't it? Full-on certified act of God.

Now, nothing billionaires get up to would really surprise me, but I can't see any way you engineer your boat getting picked up by a random tornado.

With the 2024 Democratic National Convention in full swing, it may be a nice touch of nostalgia to look back at the keynote speaker from 20 years ago. He became kind of a big deal.

I haven't seen anything from today, but yesterday there were a bunch of great speeches and lines from speakers:

AOC crushed it. Tons of cheering. One of my favorite speeches at the DNC.

The ending of Raphael Warnock's speech was hype.

Hillary Clinton got in a good zinger with something like "Kamala Harris won't ever rest... Trump, on the other hand, even fell asleep at his own trial". There were also some chants of "Lock HIM Up", which was nice payback.

Jamie Raskin gave a bunch of memorable lines at the expense of JD Vance, calling him Trump's "pet chameleon" and reminding JD Vance that the reason why there's a job opening as Trump's runningmate is because Trump's zealots tried to hang Vance's predecessor.

Biden's speech was sincere and full of gratitude, with lines like "I love this job, but I love this nation even more". Insane amount of cheering for him.

A series of speakers (one married couple, one young woman, and another young woman) spoke about their emotional trauma / physical endangerment when they were denied medical access / had other hardships during miscarriages and rape and pregnancy complications, and related their stories to Republicans banning abortions. Those anecdotes hit pretty hard.

Kamala Harris trolled Republicans by wearing a tan suit, just like Obama did that one time.

I've been following the live feed and getting that news. It's been pretty interesting change from the previous night. I think if they can carry this energy through September into October, then it'll be a landslide. But then again...2016 happened. So can't take anything for granted until the ballots are cast and counted.

Absolutely. One can never feel too comfortable or too confident in how our election will play out, especially when the opponents are Trump and his election denialists who are already positioned to try and steal another election, like they tried in 2020: https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/trump-swing-state-officials-election-deniers-1235069692/

Here are my thoughts and highlights for DNC day 2:

Anna Navarro called out Trump and Vance and Republicans for their awkward position of hating dogs and cats. What kind of real, compassionate people brag about murdering their own dog or mock people for owning cats?

Chuck Schumer reminded everyone that November’s election doesn’t just elect the president, but will also decide the Senate and House of Representatives, so we need to vote blue all the way down the ballot. He also called out JD Vance for lying about being a proponent of the child tax credit (Vance had originally claimed that he endorsed child tax credits, yet there was recently a vote to expand the child tax credit, and Vance didn’t vote for it). Schumer could have pushed harder on Vance’s fake “pro-family/pro-children” hypocrisy, given Vance’s toxic rhetoric (Vance claimed that women are useless unless they’re making babies, and adults are sociopaths unless they’re parents, yet he also voted against protecting IVF for family planning and doesn’t care about passing legislation that helps children and their families).

Bernie Sanders said great Bernie things, which obviously resonated with the crowd. He directly compared 4 years ago to what we have now, contradicting Trump’s laughable assertion that we were better off during the covid pandemic. He also compared the Harris-Walz vision for America to the Trump-Vance vision for America, and he’s all-in on the former.

I hadn’t heard J.B. Pritzker speak until now, and I think he did an impressive job. One particular thing I liked in his speech was when he called out the terrible conservative assumption that people of color can’t be qualified for jobs just because we also value diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Having a Republican mayor from Arizona (John Giles) endorsing Harris and condemning Trump is a little surprising, but it could help swing Arizona blue and embolden other disillusioned Republicans to speak out against Trump.

Tammy Duckworth had a great speech about fighting for freedom and reproductive care. It’s hard to make the point any stronger when you say “My struggle with infertility was more painful than any wound I earned on the battlefield” after you’ve lost both your legs fighting in Iraq.

The introduction to Kamala Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, and their blended family, was very touching. Supportive, goofy, and proud to be the first Second Gentleman. The montage of pictures and videos, narrated by Doug’s son, was really well done. Doug’s speech was super relatable. He and his parents seem like actual, real people, super bright-eyed and sincerely happy. Doug reminiscing/cringing over his first phone call to Kamala is one of the most adorable things ever. Doug saying that he loves his wife’s laugh instantly neuters that Republican talking point. I also can’t imagine anyone ever giving such a loving speech like this about Donald Trump. This is easily one of my favorite speeches, this week.

Michelle Obama is one of the only people who could follow such an amazing speech by Doug Emhoff. Michelle didn’t disappoint either; she never does. “The affirmative action of generational wealth” is an amazing phrase. And about Trump, saying “Who’s gonna tell him, that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those ‘black jobs’” was phenomenal. She crushed it.

Barack Obama is still a rockstar too. Amazing, heartfelt speech about Biden and Harris and Walz, hope and empathy and hard work, and the torch-passing of Obama/Biden -> Biden/Harris -> Harris/Walz. I can’t imagine a more inspirational speech than his, this week. He even turned his classic “Yes We Can” slogan into a “Yes She Can”, too. His comedic delivery is still spot-on, and I think he made effective criticisms about Trump. For example, Barack calling Trump “weird” for being so obsessed with crowd sizes is important for two reasons: First of all, Trump recently threw his own runningmate under the bus, insisting that JD Vance was the only one being called weird. Second, Trump has been going on increasingly-unhinged and delusional rants about his crowd sizes, not just lying about and inflating his own numbers, but also lying about and deflating Harris’s numbers. In fact, many of the Harris-Walz crowds have been as large as (or larger than) the Trump-Vance crowds, and that absolutely triggers Trump… more than just about anything else. Trump only cares about the limelight and really can’t handle when other people are as popular (or more popular) than him.

There are a lot of rumors circulating that RFK Jr. will drop out, so that Trump has a better chance of beating Harris. RFK Jr. might even formally endorse Trump.

Yeah, this isn't surprising at all, considering how excited conservatives were at the prospect of RFK in the 2020 Democratic primary. They wanted a right wing conspiracy theorist on the Democratic ticket, but now that he's independent, he only stands to split votes off of Trump.

RFK's campaign has been funded by Republicans with the goal of siphoning votes away from Democrats. But turns out, to the surprise of very few people, that a total nut job anti-vaxxer who talks about how worms ate part of his brain doesn't really resonate with Democratic voters, and instead appeals more to Republicans.
