The Queen (her representative) still picks the Supreme Court while the people get to advise her (rep) also the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (in London) serves as the final court of appeal for The Bahamas

It’s weird that you don’t know if nearby nations are part of America and weirder that you asked strangers on the internet instead of checking.

I thought we owned every island not named Cuba that is within close proximity of the USA. Because you know...military might makes right. How have we not colonised...I mean...annexed them yet?

The US only got the Spanish ones because Spain is the Mexico of Europe and the US a hundred years ago gave no shits about taking land from some euromexicans.

So the premise of the joke is that 19th and early 20th Century American leadership were generally racist expansionists who saw the northern half of Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Philippines, and a bunch of other places as being rightfully theirs. These are all Spanish speaking places. None of the British or French places were targeted. The substance of the joke is the idea that to ignorant racists anywhere hot, south, and where the people speak “Mexican” is just another form of Mexico and therefore intrinsically inferior to the US and subject to manifest destiny. It’s a mockery of colonialism combined with the stereotype that Americans don’t know or care about the wider world. An understanding of Spain would be beyond the simplistic hierarchy of colonialism and so in the eyes of the Americans Spain is rounded down to Euro-Mexico. Spain is obviously its own country with its own complicated history and culture. But the United States decided it was entitled to the former Spanish Empire and I am jokingly suggesting this is because all of that history and culture were lost of the American invaders who thought it was basically Mexico.

I forgot to preface with "from 1700 on", but didn't, so I accept my mistake. That said, the capacity of a government to mobilize resources for war and conquest is not sinonimous with how rich its people were. Although it's not a simple thing to do, economic historians look to production and consumption to have a clearer view of how prosperous a people were, and by these measures Spain was at the middle of the pack in the 1500s (when the Italian states were the most properous) and was left behind by 1700 (when Holland was at its relative peak). After 1700, Spain could barely do the former anyway, and in reguards to literacy even at their peak the were never up there.

I found it comical but then we got kind of serious so I felt I needed to put that out there. I wonder, if Portugal and Spain hadn't journeyed as far as South America and tried for Southeast Asia, could they have stayed on par with England, France, and to some extent, the Dutch. Could they have taken Hong Kong from Britain? World history is fascinating. In a lesson of why trump shouldn't be allowed to tweet anything, ever, I present to you exhibit A. Amateur satellite trackers have found the satellite that took the Iran picture. Amateur satellite trackers say they believe an image tweeted by President Trump on Friday came from one of America's most advanced spy satellites. The image almost certainly came from a satellite known as USA 224, according to Marco Langbroek, a satellite-tracker based in the Netherlands. The satellite was launched by the National Reconnaissance Office in 2011. Almost everything about it remains highly classified, but Langbroek says that based on its size and orbit, most observers believe USA 224 is one of America's multibillion-dollar KH-11 reconnaissance satellites. "It's basically a very large telescope, not unlike the Hubble Space Telescope," Langbroek says. "But instead of looking up to the stars, it looks down to the Earth's surface and makes very detailed images." Source Seems minor, but little things can add up quickly.
