He made it quite clear he'd only declare an emergency out of political expedience. The "crisis" doesn't exist. I agree in normal speech context. But Trump is commonly like "Ya know, some other people would just let a bus run over an old woman, but not me. I'm an amazing man and I would totally pay someone to save all sorts of old women". I just see it as him contrasting what he views as his amazingness against some fictitious other than.

Saying you "could" do something is not the same as saying "I could, and nothing would be different". What if we replace 'appendicitis' with 'heart attack'? One I would call a definitive emergency. The other is in a bit of a grey area where it can and does get bad but isn't immediately life-threatening.

Appendicitis has a scale of severity levels from not very bad to this WILL kill you if left untreated. It can be every bit as lethal as a heart attack. Without defining the severity, yes I would agree that one could potentially not be an emergency. Trump has really shot himself in the foot(probably both) to be honest.

i can’t wait to see what’ll happen when he hears this. you can’t buy this kind of entertainment. you have to love when the deranged turn on each other. https://www.newsweek.com/ann-coulter-donald-trump-scam-stupidest-base-national-emergency-1333033 “No, the goal of a national emergency is for Trump to scam the stupidest people in his base for 2 more years,” she tweeted. "Will someone please primary this guy?" she tweeted late Thursday. She added, “Throw a rock and you'll hit someone with more common sense than the people Trump has surrounded himself with.”

Normally in this situation trump would lash out at the person attacking, with the most personal and biting insult he could come up with (and almost nothing is out of bounds here). But he seems to be tiptoeing around any insults of these conservative commentators who have the ear of his base. So today he said Coulter "went off the reservation." Wonder how long the kid gloves will last.

The essential problem with the widespread notion that Trump is declaring an emergency when there is no emergency is this: Emergency isnt typically defined in relevant law, presidents 've always had discretion to decide if there’s an emergency, & they’ve often declared emergencies under circumstances short of necessity, to address a real problem but not an emergency as understood in common parlance. As Koh and Yoo put it (and this has not changed in the three decades since they wrote): “Presidents “have declared national emergencies with little regard to whether a real emergency has actually existed.” So as we have seen many times in the last two years, Trump is building on very broad congressional delegations and past presidential practices. But Trump makes what he is doing seem, and in reality be, much worse because he suggests openly that there is no real emergency (“I didn’t need to do this”), instead of (as past presidents did) hiding the ball or using more effective rhetoric in a less divisive context. Here as elsewhere, Trump hurts himself – legally if not otherwise – by his lack of hypocrisy. As in many contexts, Trump by his willingness to push the envelope, combined with his shamelessness and lack of hypocrisy, shines the brightest of lights on how much power Congress has given away, and how much extraordinary power presidents have amassed.

the reason people are upset is that he’s doing it specifically to circumvent powers explicitly ascribed to congress (budget.) and of course because it’s plain ridiculous.

But it's Trump, so who knows who he is taking advice from now. What does Fox News say about all this? in a related article where he called her ‘off the reservation’ he also praised fox news, so presumably they said something good about him. oh i’m sorry i double posted. mb.

There is like a one to two week delay on whatever topic he picks, so his internet is real slow. Or he is posting from Mars. Shit like this on my side of Facebook is where I'm getting my inheritance from my uncles that don't have kids. Troll the USPMT thread for whats current and then spin it neatly when it comes up a week later to the less inormed electorate. You can form a good argument against the green new deal from a few angles. I think everyone can agree that its aggressive, vague and sprawling with unproven solutions. At the same time its prime content for pelosi to tack right on and still be miles to the left of the current attitude in the nation. AOC plays the professional wrestler role really well.
