What is Summer Games Done Quick?
Summer Games Done Quick is an annual charity video game marathon streamed live here and on Twitch.TV, with donations going directly to Doctors Without Borders (no middle-man)! The event features high-level play by speedrunners, playing games as quickly as possible. During the stream, viewers can donate to see various challenges completed, or to be entered in for awesome prizes! Make sure to come back for the show, starting at 11:30 AM Central Time Sunday, right here!

sort of excited to see trauma center: second opinion being run. i ran it a few years ago when no one else did and its cool to see a scene grow big enough that it gets ran at sgdq this year.

Damn that's some pretty huge exposure, wonder how big of an effect it'll have on viewer numbers and donations.

just realized that this speedrun event wont be as much fun as it used to be since they're sterilizing for the normies -- that colbert plug hurts the fun imo

Are you talking about moderation for the twitch chat?

no, the actual speedrunners themselves and the fallout from last year. Twitch chat is gonna be twitch chat, no matter how hard you try to contain it

Well this isn't true considering when you donate it's directly to the charity's Paypal (PCF or MSF). You are welcome to speculation if you want but your receipt of donation is to the charity directly. This is required for GDQ to be a non profit organization.

GDQ is not a nonprofit, it's a LLC. However, afaik, they do give 100% of all the donations (and also twitch subscriptions, including the twitch part) to the charities involved.
PCF pays GDQ for about 17% of the expected donation total prior to the events. I don't know about MSF.
This has been confirmed by one of the organizers of GDQ after this year's AGDQ in response to a question adressed to him in the official budget thread on SDA.

Demon Souls run is fun (minus seeing the swamp 3 times haha), looking forward to the Jedi Academy, RE 2, Skyrim and Fallout runs!
Kind of sad they only plan for a 10 minute Mario Maker segment, the 4v4 blind custom level race from AGDQ 2016 was totally amazing

The Mario Maker segment will last one hour. You were probably looking at the setup time.

I hardly watch speedruns. The only games I watch are Zelda games and I wanna be the Boshy
But witwix became a big streamer and doesn't run boshy anymore kale also stopped. I liked watching runs of Wings of Vi. Nobody plays that anymore.

sadly this time around I'll only be able to watch today and tomorrow, rest of the week is filled with work and watching football.
At least I get to watch the Megaman and Castlevania blocks. And I'll probably try to get up tomorrow at 5 in the morning to watch Dishonored and New Order. Gotta catch the rest on VOD

Yes, too bad adam_ak only runs DoTA 2 these days. Looking at the runners, there is only SpikeVegeta, Darkwing Duck, romscout and Mecha Richter left (though, none of them ever got the numbers the other three had (well, except maybe romscout who used to be more popular on Ustream when Justin.tv wasn't really a thing yet)).

It's in Super Metroid. At the end of the game, you can decide to save the animals but it takes more time. This is why when you kill the animals, you save frames, and vice versa.
Each time the game is featured at a GDQ, there's a donation incentive for both options (kill/save the animals).

Okay more questions, this is fascinating.

Do the speedrunners just keep to one game/franchise or do they go from game to game? Because it seems so random that these three young boys decided to dedicate their "career" to this game.

I think the majority of speedrunners have ran more than one game in their "career". Sometimes, they dedicate all their effort to one single game during several months, sometimes years, and quit the game when they feel they cannot improve their time. What keeps speedrunners going is a live community with other people to race against, or discuss with to find new strats.

Speedrunners tend to play games in the same franchise (like Mario, Pokémon, GTA), or in the same genre, or just games that they love which can be more varied.

These marathons always make me appreciate the improvements to controls in the last 20 odd years. Some of these games were so fucking hard purely because the controls were so awkward.

I only ever got to play Spyro at my uncle's house because his wife had a PS1

I used to play it a lot since i used to own a ps1 when i was like 12 years old. But i gave up on Spyro at some point because of the controls (as you said) and because eventually i had no idea where i was and what i was supposed to do. No questlog in these old games haha. Lucky enough when those games gave you a map :p (that made me play Legend of Legaia and Wild Arms a lot on my ps1)

Complete lack of context clues, better just explore every inch of every area I've been to and see what happens.

Also the Gerudo Valley theme fro OOT, one of my favorite songs from that game.

True. A lot of the difficulty came from lacking stuff such as questlog, map, even basic stats or instructions sometimes. Also there was no way for the developer to influence the game they made. They basically had to trust their balance to fit for most players because no way can you change that in a ps1 game from 1995 haha

I used to watch Raikaru stream on another channel a while ago. It's interesting to see him evolve from someone part of a larger group and branch off into a speedrunner at AGDQ.

If I were to guess, probably some exploit only possible in that version.

Proved to be my second, unwritten hypothesis: It's just fun to listen to German.

Still is, a bit quirky and of its time. I think it would be an excellent candidate for a movie adaptation if they did a prequel with the film covering the fall of the underwater city.

His hand would be pretty cramped though.

In the stream they said its because german is the fastest language in this game. For version difference, ps2 version on ps3 (through ps store for example) is the fastest, because of glitches and loading times.

Maybe I'm a bit cynical but it could have been to sell more physical guides when those were actual things. Now everyone reads online walkthroughs and wikis so you don't sell more guides by making your game harder, you just drive more traffic to those websites.

The Kaizo SMB runs are fun and hilarious (and horrifically hard), guess we have to wait until AGDQ in the winter for those.

Just officially hit $7M total GDQ donations!

This SGDQ seems to be starting off decently well too, considering SGDQ < AGDQ in terms of hype and donations.

I like how inventory management is the hardest part of the game for him.

Also that Dawn of Sorrow last boss was pretty clutch earlier.

Edit: Lmao blindfold run inventory issues might have been due to broken controller.

He got through with help. Apparently one of the control key (the left trigger) stopped working in the shop menu and he kept getting lost.
Just really really bad luck.

He made it after getting help in the inventory. Apparently one button (go to bottom item) wasn't working.

Man, is there any way to lower the quality of the stream?
It keeps resetting to something that looks like 720p and my parents' connection can't handle that at all.

Wow, I didn't know that Liberia didn't use the metric system. Learned something today

It is the US, Liberia and Myanmar that still have it. The UK still uses it for somethings, but we're the few, the proud, the stubborn I guess.

Aside from the puzzle solving aspect, the soundtrack is one of the things I love most about Braid. I like classical music to begin with but whoever had the job of picking the music for that game was bang on with matching the musicality/tone of the songs to what each level needed to bring out. I remember reading a few articles on selecting the music on such a low budget, it was genius.

Same with Machinarium, that had a pretty fun soundtrack as well. Similar in that it has puzzles in it, but is slightly more like Myst with less linear thinking at times.

It boggles my mind that there are speed runners who commit their time to really shitty games.

Like I get why people love playing DKC2 or Super Metroid over and over, but some of these games are just so bad.

A lot of crappy games have really short runs too. If you are already awesome at platformers or whatever it's not that time consuming to grind 100 or so runs of a 20min or even 1 hour game.

Mickey Mousecapades seems like a fairly well put together game for an NES game. Maybe a little wonky considering it came out 4 years after the system, but for a corporate game in the 80s not abysmal.

I understand that the sum of these donations is a drop in the bucket for DWB, but nearly $400k (so far) isn't something to scoff at. You'd think a DWB representative would pop in to say hello once in a while.

At the beginning of the marathon there was someone representative and talked a bit about how much the donations really help them. When i remember it correctly. >.>

Im sure they do recognize and appreciate all the help, without showing up once in a while to say hello.

I checked the VOD before posting and there wasn't anybody like that at the beginning. Also, your second statement is extremely poor mentality; when somebody donates a large amount of money the least you could do is actually show up and say thanks.

Typical corporate fathats, too busy re-attaching limbs and tugging back in intestines in Syria to come over and say hi!

Honestly, though, at the start of the event, there was an MSF rep and he explained on stream how much the donations help, citing an example of a hospital they run for two million a year that treats hundreds of patients.

Jokes are jokes, but something like 10% of their budget is used just for that reason - to fly people to places to make sure the other 90% gets to where it needs to.

Anyway, yeah I was just trying to find the VOD of it, was really curious.

Here is the link to the vod where a MSF guy talked for a little bit today. He was very thankful.

Wow, I knew GDQ was raising a lot of money, but hearing that it's the largest donation thing for MSF is pretty crazy.

They also get various material assets donated to them from various world powers.

Why would it not be possible? You mean in a reasonable amount of time? Nah i think the record is a few minutes actually.

Upon further research it might be because the speedrun isn't particularly interesting, something about glitching from the sewers into the temple and thats it ~3 mins.

Without glitching its about a 50 minute run or something like that.

I only caught the last bit of that run, but man did it look boring. There didn't appear to be anything terribly interesting about the run just doing the movement as best as possible. Even the commentary sounded like the runner and couch were bored.

Makes me wonder how it got picked as a game to be shown.
I can take that responsibility.

The ingame tracks for Trials Fusion made for a good run 2 years ago (imo) but Blaze is horrendously uninteresting, the other runners weren't much more entertaining, and the community tracks didn't really work.

Do the players play on the actual consoles and CRT monitors for low latency? How is the video captured then?

Also, I'm so hyped for Super Mario Land! That's the first game I ever completed, and my parents watched me doing it (on the Super Gameboy). That's the only pleasant memory I have of my father.

There was a trans person playing on the couch and people are assholes. I honestly don't know how they even noticed, I wouldn't even have noticed she was trans.

The runner introduced her as his girlfriend, who "began her transition 2 years ago" and yea kinda a no brainer how Twitch chat would react to that...

Ah I can't really blame anyone for it, this transeptance stuff is still pretty novel. Give it a couple of years and bashing trans people will be just as unacceptable as gay-bashing is now.

I wouldn't call these troll levels, they are all pretty well designed, the difficulty is just very high.

why are some of the incentives that high? They usually weren't that high right? A 40k one for OoT in a short time coming up. And a 50k one for tommorow for the Pokemon blue rba any%

Because greed and misjudging the Colbert hype.

Also to get the total donation count higher so it will be a success, otherwise discussion about gdq going downwards will start in the internet something, is my second guess.

Generally the later in the week incentives are higher as donations rise. Most of them get met so until they start to not be met I think they will keep them higher than ones from earlier in the week.

I think they should have went with a race over all levels again though instead of indivdual level races.

Still best game at SGDQ so far :D

Personally I liked this format better. If a team has such a big lead like last time it stops being a race. This year though was awesome A lot of the hype we got this SGDQ wouldn't have happened at AGDQ. The close calls and stuff.

These warps. O.O The first is pretty well know and i think many have found it by themselves. But the other ones are pretty impressive. Also sprite limit at Julius fight.

Uh, no? GDQ was paid in advance by MSF, MSF gets 100% of what they manage to collect during the event.

Sure, you could maybe say that GDQ will get more or less money next year depending on what they manage to get this year, but that's stretching it a bit imo.

The amount they were paid this event was based on the last event thus the more they receive this event the more they will receive the next event. Not sure how that is stretching it

Since the amount is agreed on beforehand by setting up a budget you don't actually know that. If the budget is way out of line MSF will probably not agree. It's not like they get a flat percentage next year depending on how they did this year. MSF could just as well pay out less money next year (or decide that it isn't worth it at all).

Now, I think GDQ probably runs a profit on these events, but I also don't think there's a bunch of people getting rich from this.

I believe they said somewhere that MSF provides funding at roughly 17% of the amount of expected money raised.

Which, when you get down to it, is actually money required to run events this large. Renting the space alone is a giant cash pit.

You do realize that the organizers are paid depending on how much money they raise right?

I think the 17% was from PCF at ADGQ. It's possible MSF does something similar I guess.
Yeah, it does cost a bit to run these events.

If anyone is really interested the numbers for AGDQ2016 (not this event) can be found here: https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/agdq2016_budget_overview.html to get some feeling for where the money goes.

Of course it costs a lot to run it but the problem is the way they are abusing underpaid staff so that the top names can make a whole lot of money for nothing. The fact that the speedrunners themselves have to pay attendance fee is pretty shameful if you ask me

No real way to know if the staff is underpaid unless you have some source on that. But it certainly isn't impossible, that would be pretty common in general I suppose?

The fact that the speedrunners have to pay the fee I can agree on though, they should get in free imo.

If you kill the king on a specific difficulty, you cant open the cow level on this difficutly again. its a hidden quest in the cow level and if you succed, its done and over. With multiplayer the rule is a bit more complex. Also for singleplayer you have work arounds, edit a file so you can kill the king as often as you like or use plugy, which kinda does the same.

Runners and volunteers have not had to pay the registration fee since SGDQ 2015. AGDQ 2016 and SGDQ 2016 had free registration for accepted runners and volunteers.

At the rate they're going, this SGDQ is going to finish well beyond 3am

Sort of sucks, but at least the last game I'm interested in watching will be the Super Metroid race

edit: I thought FFVI was gonna be 6 hours long. Guess they will finish before 3am, but still way later than originally scheduled

Nah, I was just having a bit of fun. I only have fond memories of Pokemon because my brother had Red and I had Blue and despite the fact that I am five years younger than him, I remember kicking his ass over the GB link as a kid.

What exactly is so special about TAS playing 4 games at the same time? TAS is awesome for sure, but unless all inputs where the same (which they where not), it wouldn't matter how many games he plays at the same time. Still nice though, but so far no TAS-run entertained me more than the N64 Mario Cart run. That shit was hilarious and impressive at the same time.

Yes, it was the same input. But the latency for the games was different, so the inputs were not in sync for the whole run.

The movement wasn't the same because they were using clever tricks like jumps and hugging walls, so most of the time inputs made for one game didn't impact other games. Like they had Mario in the air in SMW while he jumped in SMB3, so the jump input didn't impact SMW.

Still it is impressive to have the same inputs for 4 games and all of them be completed with it.

The games are not the same so they have to do extra things like that wall hugging/doing inputs during load screens/etc to make it work completely, but thats still very awesome.

Great event as always.

Really enjoyed the Pokémon race.

Anyone knows what was the final figure of the donations? Was the million reached? (Yesterday stopped watching just short of 900k)

I kind of felt, though, that the games were a bit less awesome than usual. No Boshy, no Wings of Wi, no Dark Souls, no DKC2, no Kaizo Mario, not much that I was all that interested in. That said, the runs I did see were, without exception, really good.

Absolutely sick event every time!

I agree in that I didn't think it was a great of a GDQ event as I've observed in the past, just based off personal feel. The donation total got pushed above more than normal from the past events because of all the incentives

This event was great. I rarely tune in but decided to try and do so. Lots of nostalgia with Legend of Zelda: OOT though I didn't finish watching the whole thing. Pokemon Red's run was great too and the super mario world 3 run (watched vod) was fantastic. Never realized there was a faster way to bowser. Some of the stuff the speed runners was pulling off was insane. The double bounce for instance or spinning and barely missing a koopa so many times. It was very impressive.

They didn't speedrun the original megaman on NES, did they?

That's awesome! Especially since SGDQs are considered to be less popular than AGDQs.

Demons Souls

Mark of the Ninja
Jak & Daxter (duh)
Mario Maker Race
Ocarina Glitchless

And those are just the ones I watched live. I'll have to go back and catch up on the others.

I'd recommend Super Metroid Race, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Blindfolded) and Two Worlds. (Dawn of Sorrow mostly for the last boss.)

Pokemon race if you're somewhat into Pokemon.

It's an impressive technical feat, but honestly, it doesn't really make for good viewing. Having four screens to track makes it really overwhelming.

IMO it's one of those TAS's that are better enjoyed when you read up on all the tricks they use to make it work (eg. inputting left + right simultaneously on the controller results in different behavior in each game), and possibly watch at half speed.

Not a single word about trauma center second opinion? Despite it being like what night time there the run was a great watch especially for scrub like me that had no chance to play the game. commentary on point, very skilled runner, cool people on the couch, not to mention surgeon outfit :D - worth a watch totally.
need to watch some more vod as work took my time out and I wasnt able to play the stream there..

Yes, and thanks for the reminder. All i had was at the end of the month. Just saw they do Addams Family for GB. Have to see that one.

It was good and fun. Also they showed some stuff after the run as bonus.

Never seen ESA before, but I see Buck Bumble, Pokemon Snap, LoZ: OoT, and SM64 on the schedule! Anything N64 is great in my book

Can you please make a new thread for ESA- similar to the AGDQ and SGDQ ones- to add hype to it and keep track of everything?

Great event as always.

Really enjoyed the Pokémon race.

Anyone knows what was the final figure of the donations? Was the million reached? (Yesterday stopped watching just short of 900k)

$1,297,669.44 according to https://gamesdonequick.com/tracker/18

That's awesome! Especially since SGDQs are considered to be less popular than AGDQs.

Maybe it also is because MSF is global, so there might be more of an incentive to donate for europeans than for the PCF? Prevent Cancer Foundation only acts in the USA and also is more about talking not researching. So maybe that might be a reason

No bonus stream this time? :/

Venue is getting a lot more expensive to book. Can't keep it for the extra days anymore, unfortunately.

Don't they change cities within the US every GDQ? There are enough cheaper/mid-tier cities in the US I'm surprised it's a problem...unless I'm mistaken and they keep it in the same city in which case maybe they should change it up. IDK.

(edit: I'm not suggesting they break any hotel contract they are in, that's just silly, but rather change the venue up if it makes financial sense and when GDQ is out of their contract.)

How expensive is the typical GDQ venue to rent out for the week?

AGDQ's venue was about $40,000

They stopped doing bonus streams a few years ago actually. They were quite disorganized schedule-wise (which was the whole point you might say ...) and in the end seemed to be too much effort to maintain for not enough gain by the organisers, so they removed it.

I feel bad saying it, but I will probaby wait for a highlight compilation. I can't bring myself to watch them play the same games every event. Yeah, these games are great, but once I've seenit done 2-3 times, it probably shouldn't show up at the next event (anything named metroid, pokemon, or anything on the n64 for god's sake). That said, I'm really glad they did so well financially.

I agree on a lot of games other than Super Metroid races. That game is just fantastic.

As an older gamer (32), I would love to see more obscure or older games added. The dos era gave us some real winners. Like xcom terror from the deep and ufo defense, leisure suit larry, and dr. Dragos madcap race (not sure on that exact title). I would love to see some shit like that. They should dedicate like 3 days of the event to obscure games done quick honestly. Might ramp up interest in games people have forgotten about.

Edit: also doom, kings quest, those old commander keen games, and more that i can't remember. Oh the nostalgia.

Can't be! I played it when I was like 12 ... and it was the older, "typing version" and I didn't know English and my older brother told me to put in "take ring" and stuff and I didn't really get what it was all about!

Leisure suit larry certainly has an adult theme in it yes.

And I do believe I have seen Commander Keen speeding as a GDQ event, was a while ago tho.

commander keen 4 has definitely been run, 5 and 6 too IIRC but not 100% sure about that. 4 was in an earlier gdq, 5 and 6 would have been rather recent, agdq or sgdq 2015 probably

On this note, I went through the SGDQ 2016 playlist on YouTube, and I saw the Monster Bash speedrun. Good old Apogee games, I was surprised to see it in the lineup and never would have guessed half the stuff he pulled off doing the run. Definitely rolled the years back, would love to see more back from the day.

To be fair, point and click adventure games (like leisure suit larry) make for poor speedruns imo (with a few exceptions, like Brossentia's hilarious Town with no Name run), and the xcom games, both old and new, are probably too long and rng heavy to be run in a marathon setting. Doom and commander keen are run every once in a while though.

Hm... as mentioned, there is a version of the first Leisure Suit Larry, that is non-point-and-click but you have to type the actions! So, it would be possible to speedrun it; it would be a little bit like "Typing of the Dead"!
