because making fun of something like that is a clear cop-out. not only are you appealing to the lowest common denominator, you're exploiting a "shock factor", appealing to not the humor in your audience, but the morbid fascination.
it's the equivalent of radio DJs who play fart sounds all day, completely oblivious to the level of humor and intelligence right above their heads.

posts like "that is wrong" / "that is so fucked up" / "burn in hell!!" or when they tell a joke in the end say "haha im sooo going to hell"

I might have been guilty of this a few times but I've tried to make a more conscious effort to be more humble in posts. This is the main reason why I hated on Dark]N[exuS so much. Yes some people have more posts than others, some know more about SC than others, but I think being humble is far greater than being proud. If you post really politely and try to encourage new posters to be better posters, imagine what a thriving community we could have. I used to be a terrible poster. Mycube actually told me I made wtf threads. I was determined not to be a bad poster and tried to contribute in any way I could. Now I've graciously been accepted as a scribe boy to keep some history. why do you stress being humble so much? this is maybe the second or third time i've seen you said this. here's my take on it - humility for the sake of humility is really fucking pretentious, and don't get me wrong, i'm not saying it's something you show. from what i've seen, i think you're a good guy, but it's a pet peeve of mine in real life when people brush off achievements or praise with things like 'no, i suck' when they clearly think they're the shit, or when there are others around that are far worse off than they are. i'd much rather everyone be realistic about their own abilities without being too cocky. hell, i'd much rather have arrogant people who really can back up their shit than tons of simpering assholes that don't know how to take a compliment. there are too many christian asians (using this as an example because i used to be close friends with a lot of them years ago, before they joined the religious crowd and changed; also because i know you're in this group [not necessarily in a bad way]) at my school who have these dual backgrounds, both of which stress being reserved but in the end only make their people fake and disgusting. what really sickens me is when people completely demean themselves before 'God' (i use this loosely, and the apostrophes are not meant to offend), and trivialize themselves until nothing really rests on them anymore. where is the individuality, confidence, and pride in being human? is it impossible to worship and be faithful to your lord while knowing and acknowledging honestly where you stand in the world? just look at your last sentence. you were graciously accepted? no! you proved your merit through excellent posts and effort, and it was clear that tlnet would greatly benefit and be honored to have your help and contributions. the way you insist on phrasing it seems like it was a miracle that through hard work, you rose in the world (or at least e-world). ugh flew off topic and just kept on going. summary: i agree with you that a little modesty is important, even refreshing, but i can't understand why it's repeatedly one of your top values. again, this post isn't a flame =) just curious Uhh... thanks? Hahahahaha. I see what you are saying and respect your opinion. But being Christian has nothing to do with me valuing humility. I have always admired those who displayed great humility Christian or not. As for being humble for the sake of saying LOOK I AM SO HUMBLE, I think that's just messed up and I hadn't thought about that until you mentioned it.

I never said morbid humor, I said morbid fascination. There's a distinct difference. Infact, I even stressed the notion that is was not humor.

Yes i dislike when someone (especially irl) say : "I'm so bad and suck at this blablabla" (they even reapat it over and over if nobody pay attention) when they know it's not true and they're saying that only to be said how they rock. And now i'm so used to always reply with : "Yes you suck".

His argument was that it's a low brow attempt at humour. It is, and that's not really to be argued imo. There are plenty of reasons it is wrong though.
My argument was there are some jokes that also touch on peoples nerves. Paying them proper respect. We don't need to become a world of sissies being 100% politically correct and avoiding discussions or talks from fear of hurting people. But neither do we need to be completely insensitive and distant to the very real world around us.
Now conform you emo/goth/non-conformist mother fucker.

It IS humor its not only the picture of a starving child, its the same as Steve Irwin's halloween costume, it was histerical but so many retards got soooooo ofendede by its because "its too soon",,, what in the fuck does that shit mean!, since when time makes ok or not ok to make fun of death.
and i keep saying is all a bunch of bull mixed with hypocrecy, Eri is totally pro to make fun of anything yet is is more sensitive than any of you so stop pretending.

baal's existence on these forums is defined by his unwillingness to be even remotely decent.
he'd rather say "fuck you" than "thank you" because how else will he be remembered?

Making fun of death in a highly publicized event that may eventually get back to his family. He has children. That's not cool.
Make fun of death, sure. Death smiles on us all, the only thing you can do is smile back. Yeah yeah. But going for a cheap shot for publicity/to make your point when you can do it in a far better way?

its pointless for me to argue because you'll never understand.
make fun of me all you want, i admit i'm unequipped to relate the concept of basic decency and appropriate empathy to you.
continue to rationalize how a child brutally starving to death is funny because it's 1/2 way around the world and not in your neighborhood.

Why do we laugh about a guy falling off his bike into a puddle of mud?
Why do we laugh at some gardener who is cutting a branch and knocks his teeth off ? (rofl !)
Its human nature, a long time ago i read a quote about it but i cant remember who wrote but it something like "why do you we find joy in other's grief?, probably because laughter makes the pain go away".
almost anything jokes about something brutal, racism jokes, about nazism and jews extermination, about arab women and so on, so who draws the line of whats distasteful or not, always someone will get offended by a joke, jews, polish, victim's relatives etc etc etc.
There are so many things in this world to be fucking ofended by... sooo many yet you jump on a stupid harmless joke.

The point is that there's a line, and you're completely blind to it.

baal is totally right man
I mean I agree that tact is something alot of people could use.. but tact is about compromising, it's about respect for the people around you.
This has nothing to do with whether or not the picture is/was funny. The picture was funny to me. I can explain the humor in it if you want.
When people take an idea, a concept, and make it personal.. that is their shortcoming. When someone posts a joke and people are unable to see the humor, that is also their shortcoming.

The personal idea of a vulture stalking a malnourished child is not funny.
The broad idea of a vulture stalking a malnourished child is not funny.
So I guess it's up to you to explain the humor in it, travis.

Unless you think the addition of the word "OWNED" to the bottom of the picture makes it hilarious.
|
The picture is incredibly depressing and tragic. The child's position is unfair, unjust, and almost disturbing.
The heading of "pwned" is therefore ridiculous.. it's entirely unnecessary(which in itself can be funny). It makes me compare the starving child/vulture scenario to various other scenarios in which someone could get "pwned". This is also funny.
I think the type of humor in it could be compared to a cartoon of a scrawny guy fighting mike tyson in a boxing ring... except also, the scrawny guy doesn't have any arms. haha just thinking about that is funny, actually
