Although this thread does not function under the same strict guidelines as the USPMT, it is still a general practice on TL to provide a source with an explanation on why it is relevant and what purpose it adds to the discussion. Failure to do so will result in a mod action.

Now this would be gigantic. Diplomats exploring whether Russia’s seat to the Security Council of the UN could be taken away. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it was apparently never the subject of a resolution.

Hard to see China agreeing with that, but who knows.

It’s not possible and it’s not desirable even if it were possible. The point of the UN is to ensure peace between the postwar great powers, not a general peace. To avoid WW3, not war in general. The UN wants Russia to be able to veto anything that crosses its red lines because the UN is built never to back Russia into a corner. This is seen as an absolute good.

The war in Ukraine is not the war the UN was built to prevent. For the UN to meet it’s core purpose Russia must have a permanent seat. Other permanent members are likely to oppose taking away permanent seats on principle too.

That makes sense. That being said, losing that veto power would immensely weaken Russia diplomatically.

But you are wrong on the fact that the UN was not meant to prevent a war like the war in Ukraine, it was founded exactly for that: so that conflicts be resolved diplomatically and to out general rules in the way nations behave with each other.

I may not like china for a lot of things but they can be relied on for playing a longer game than anyone has in the world. They will veto any large changes but they will abstain from anything that Russia can't veto.

Russia can't have their Seat on the security council taken away with all the nukes they hold. Putin only care about respect and that would be making them a Chinese serf publically.

Ukraine is now the poster child of the risks of bordering Russia without belonging to NATO.

If Russia is exiled from the world economy they might have to. Thus allowing China to buy their bonds etc and become ensnared in a debt trap.

That is perhaps the most disappointing thing about this situation for me. Just how unwilling the West is to compromise on their own comforts to punish a naked aggressor on Europe's border and prevent further conflict. Because absolutely nothing done so far will deter Putin from continuing on this course.

Their probably laughing in the Kremlin about how cheap of an international price they are paying for Ukraine.

That's the frustrating part, if we cut off all financial ties Putin is likely to be ousted by his own people. And if he doesn't then fuck it, I'll pay 3x for gas or sleep with 3 coats on if I have to, knowing we at least did everything.

Agreed.

I would willingly double my heating costs. This shit needs to be hit hard. I think that we probably don't want to go to war over this, but we should do anything short of that.

Absolutely no more trade with Russia. No oil, no gas, no imports, no exports, no banking. Seize anything owned directly or indirectly by russian oligarchs abroad. Isolate Russia from everything. No more travel to or from russia (except for people who want to claim asylum).

Hit them hard and with everything we have got.

Completely agreed. Just run their economy into the ground FFS...

Scary times all the best.

My wife's grandparents came over during ww2 from western Ukraine, her grandpa passed but her Grandma who is 91 is pretty broken up. It is strange that 75 years later it is happening again. There is a fairly large Ukrainian presence in western Canada, so lots of pressure on our government to support. I know there have been talks about accepting refugees and allowing more. Even a hotline. I know its not enough, hope more
comes.

https://www.cp24.com/news/canada-must-be-ready-to-welcome-ukrainians-to-safety-expert-1.5795620

Thank you for the tip! Ukrainian diaspora in Canada is one of the biggest afaik, and I guess - it could be a good solution for the future at least. The biggest problem is that it's not possible to leave our country in safety anymore

In last two days I have received many words of support and offers to help my family across the EU/US/Canada/even more from TL forum fellas, it matters so much for my family hope! Thank you everyone who got involved. The chances we'll have to accept some of your help is rising, although we still have to wait at this point till it's safe to leave

Please, continue spreading the word about this genocide

How much did Afghanistan and Iraq cost and how much day to day impact did it have on citizens of those who waged it? Nothing?

It seems to me that yes, widespread sanctions would have a huge knock-on effect, but surely something that citizens could be insulated from to some meaningful degree. If the will was there, which it Is not.

I do believe that be it a cost of living increase and tightening of belts to sanction Russia, or collective action in that regard to deal with climate, that when push comes to shove most won’t bite. But it’s not even being floated as a question for us to collectively answer

I don't know if China would actually get involved if Russia blatantly antagonizes NATO into responding. They tend to work more long term and getting into a war on the side of an unstable Russia is certainly not in their interest.

I believe Putin was already a madman before, and now he somehow seems even more unhinged. Everything is possible.

It's confusing. One german website said "security circles" (i.e. they most likely talked to government officials who dont want to be quoted officially) explicitly denied the involvement of any special forces, while another says he was brought across the border by a "special unit of his agency" (BND = german CIA), which to me sounds more like saying "his bodyguards didnt abandon him".

Possibly major development on SWIFT sanctions. Italy apparently will support SWIFT sanctions, and Germany's foreign minister said it's a possibility. Those two along with Hungary and Cyprus have been reticent about SWIFT sanctions, and if one broke, then there's going to be pressure on all to follow.

So Russia has brought several thousand Chechen fighters from Grozny to fight in Ukraine. Urban fighting is going to get even more brutal.
