Depends on the tournament. On most of top-level competitions, I've seen these:
+ Show Spoiler +
They usually work splendidly, instantly transmitting moves to the screen and online recordings, but I haven't seen plugged-in boards in Dubai. So unless they are using wireless connection, they must rely on cameras. I'm guessing the latter, since the official site doesn't have a proper live broadcast and those on other sites are usually very delayed compared to the stream.
EDIT: Nvm, I didn't pay enough attention; boards in Dubai ARE plugged in.

the board is wired with sensors for every square (with wireless/usb/serial output capabilities). the lag comes from software/connection quality/internet lag.
look for DGT Electronic Chess Board in google

"It feels strange not to be number one by rating, it bothers me a bit and I’m going to change it” - Magnus Carlsen
Seems like Sauron's eye is resting on Nakamura's top spot now.
|
Talking about it, anyone knows where can I find an update rating for rapid and blitz?

Aronian and Carlsen ended with an exciting draw. Their expressions when chatting post-game were priceless:
Carlsen: "WTF dude, you had winning attack!" Aronian: "My brain stopped working for a second, shit happens." Carlsen: "ok, gg"
Regarding Nakamura, after couple his straight losses to Aronian, someone commented on Chessgames.com: "Nakamura thinks he can challenge Sauron but he cannot even defeat Saruman".

I'm just following this tournament with the hope of seeing Nakamura burn

Carlsen - Anand!

The commentator on official stream is so funny

Woah, even I saw that blunder from Carlsen :x

Carlsen gonna scramble a RvN draw?
edit: nope don't think so
|
that was a really bad blunder by carlsen, wow
|
ahaha Anand won! +11.6 for beating Carlsen
|
Yeah, it's losing. King will go all around the board to b2, supporting the pawn. No way to really stop it, unless you make other losing concessions like letting pawn get through or sth. Carlsen just resigned, Anand is now a new leader.
Amazing blunder from Magnus. I saw that Rb6 in an instant. For a while, I thought he decided there was nothing better there anyway and hoped that taking all pawns will give him better chances, but I'm quite convinced it was just a big fuckup. I mean, if he could take a-pawn in the process, he would have compensation, but with that pawn, any Exchange-down ending sucks hard.
|
Yeah I guess he screwed up. I guess when I see tactics like this immediately, Magnus can too :D . I also don't think there is any reason to go from b&n vs rook to an exchange down.

3 more rounds to go. Anand - Caruana and Carlsen - Yangyi next. I only realized now that they always pair up according to the tournament points.

Scumbag Nepomniachtchi plays out lost King+Rook vs King+Queen ending against Jobava, instead of resigning. Even asked the arbiter to start counting 50-moves in case of a draw, lol.
And, as usual, someone has that annoying Queen+Pawn vs Queen ending that can be played forever and delay next round.

QPvQ endings are just really depressing.

Well, first of all, even if you defend best, it's a matter of 20 moves at most to either checkmate you or fork your Rook with the Queen. So I don't think it makes sense to check 2600+ player's technique, especially with so much time on the clock that he can literally figure out the technique over-the-board, even if he didn't knew it beforehand.
Realistically, the only pawnless endings worth playing till the end against GMs are K+N+B vs K and K+R+B vs K+R. Maybe K+R vs K+N also, but even there, you can only win in some cases or with the help of your opponent.
