She wanted an election because she wanted a strengthened democratic mandate as she was wasn't directly elected (though technically you only ever vote for a party). It's difficult to know what Teresa May thinks, as by any accounts, her actions and thinking during her campaign was done mostly by three trusted advisors, who were dumped afterwards for obvious reasons. Stong and stable, strong and stable. Might had worked in USA, didn't work in UK.

Technically you only vote for a MP. Parties are an extraconstitional product of the need for coordination at a national level, not a part of the system. There is absolutely no reason why she couldn’t have formed a national coalition for the issue, beyond the fact that she thought she’d win.

The issue crosses party lines and the public are extremely divided, as are the parties themselves. Rather than trying to push this bill against both an opposition and her own party she should have sought buyin from all sides so that the bill had their names on it too.

Too late for that now though. This cockup has May written on it and I don’t think anyone is interested in lashing themself to the sinking ship.

so Farage has quit UKIP, citing the anti-Islam as opposed to anti-EU direction it has gone (the obsession with Tommy Robinson)

It's like a spot from a political satire programme.
Though it's absolutely devoid of substance and obtuse as can be. Mildly funny in the beginning but after the arguing part they're just full tilt: May is the evil stupid maniac that wants to poison everyone with a daft cake.

Worth saying that May didn't call an election due to any romantic ideas about democracy or mandates. She just wanted enough MPs that opposition from the anti-Europe loonies would be irrelevant - before the election she still didn't have this.

Oh yes, UKIP being anti-Islam is a terribly new thing that was never there in the golden days of Farage.

Fucking prick. Hope it all comes back on him one way or another.

Islamophobia is only acceptable as a means to an end in the world of Farage.

Well, is she any different to Macron then? Besides having a higher approval rating i mean.
France is burning, with Macron to go very soon.
The economies of Italy and Greece are a fucking disaster.
There are illegal immigrants pouring through porous borders.
Merkel got crushed at the recent elections.
Several European countries refuse to sign the UN migration pact, Populism rising across the continent.

What you are seeing in France is just the starter, it will spread across Europe in 2019.The UK may be screwed, sure. But not because of Brexit, because of bad decisions over the past 50 years. The European Union as an idea is finished and 2019 marks it's expiration date.

Go back to writing EU politics fanfic, Nettles. Your take on reality really doesn't match.

A lot of these particular leaders are unpopular, yes, and will probably be ousted, but the EU as an idea retains popularity in most of the key states. The only ones with a reasonable-high likelihood of trying to leave are Italy and maybe Greece.

About the only thing you said that was of real consequence was that the economies of Italy and Greece are bad. Small bad decisions build up to big ones when you don't have control over currency inflation.

People are understandably angry that Germany holds so much of the wealth, but Europe rises and falls all together.

Greece and Italy won't leave. Its a nice thing for populists to talk about but they are not stupid enough to do it.

The UK will be hurt hard by leaving and its 1000x more healthy then Italy or Greece. If they leave they will fall much much further.

I put Italy and Greece in the same boat as us, where the idea has gained some ground with the populace. So I think it's possible they will.

Of course it's equally possible that they're waiting to see how Brexit treats us before they jump, and the projections on that score aren't nice right now.

The current state of Brexit is "Health agents telling grocery stores to stockpile food before the trade barriers go up to make sure there isn't a sudden shortage."

I'm guessing those two countries don't want to starve.

Yeah well, just no. The vote just got cancelled.

And also from todays news: The European Court of Justice decided that UK can cancel the whole Brexit, if the british parliament just says so. The rest of the EU has no say in this.

Cancellation is not confirmed yet. At this stage I won't believe anything until it actually happens.

You are right!
The headliner just changed here. Now it is "according to reports May cancels... "
Thanks for the correction.

Of course, the uncertainty generated by this government over the simple yes/no issue of a vote tomorrow has caused the pound to devalue again., quite severely.
Whatever keeps the Maybot in power, I suppose.
