So you think that if China stopped supporting them everything would just be settled peacefully? That's very optimistic. Keep in mind China doesn't want SK as their direct neighbour either. I think that what they're doing makes quite a bit of sense. It's all up to the NK government to push for a change, but they couldn't care less.

is really the non aggression pact canceled? I heard it wasn't.
if the NAP is canceled i expect a coup d'état probably organized by China/Russia to avoid the North Korea become friendly to U.S. / OTAN
the last NAP canceled that I know was the one between Poland and Russia in august of 1939

Yeah North Korea and China are close but I will highly doubt China has any part on encouraging North Korea into this behavior. Two things I can imagine: 1) More sanctions against North Korea. China has ignored sanctions before and basically all the illegal exports of N. Korea travelled via China, so maybe they can make some money through this. 2) Every time North Korea acts up people bring up China's influence over it. As seen in this tread people now perceive it as some kind of "junkyard dog" of China or China's little brother acting up again. If there ever will be a war and after N. Korea is defeated and the victorious countries and international community decides what will happen to N. Korea, China can demand the biggest say in the discussion because in peoples minds they always had the biggest influence over it.

Lol best megathread title ever!
Seriously, every week it's some NK story... and by story, I mean scare tactics by either NK or more often Western media.

Nothing's going to happen. China has too many vested global interests to let N Korea get too far out of line.

Outside its artillery and missiles, North Korea struggles to match the South.
Many of the soldiers that make North Korea the world's most heavily militarised state are poorly trained or even properly fed and are deployed in hard labour or farming to supplement the meagre resources of their units.
The North's air force has more than 820 fighter jets, according to South Korea's Defence Ministry, but it does not have enough fuel to fly sorties or conduct needed drills to maintain combat effectiveness. South Korea has 460 jets.
North Korea has 4,200 tanks, according to South Korea, although Seoul's 2,400 are more modern and better maintained.
The question of North Korea's atomic capability was thrust to the headlines when Pyongyang on Thursday threatened the United States with a nuclear strike.
That came in the wake of accusations from Pyongyang that Washington was using military drills in South Korea as a launch pad for a nuclear war.
Experts say North Korea is years away from being able to hit continental America with a nuclear weapon despite a decades-long push toward an atomic capability.
The core of the North's unconventional military focus is a stockpile of fissile material that could be enough for six to eight nuclear weapons, and up to 5,000 tonnes of biological and chemical weapons that can wipe out a mid-size industrial city.

Totally beside the point and off topic, so excuse me, but I'm wondering how on Earth that article was placed on Huffington Post with so many glaring writing mistakes. "Scare" instead of "scarce", numerous basic grammatical errors, other misspellings...etc. It's obviously not written by a native English speaker, so that's forgiven, but I'm surprised they don't have editors who more meticulously check for all these errors prior to posting/reposting.

I love this thread's title.

Huffington Post isn't reliable enough.
But I feel like basically what the North is thinking is... threaten everyone possible with nuclear arms and hope they are scared enough to back down. When in reality it's just making it worse. Hell China, their closest "allies" are very wary of what they are doing.
This isn't going to end until North backs down. Most countries are tired of their crap I think. Someone has to call their bluff.

This thread was very much needed. The main forum was getting flooded with all the North Korea stuff O_o. Prolly should make a China megathread as well at some point.

I'm no expert, but from what I hear, these are what each country in Six-party talks primarily want. Oversimplified, but shouldn't be far too off I guess.
N. Korea = food, security, and presesrvation of Kim dynasty
U.S. = nuclear free Korean peninsula and less anti-U.S. regime in the region if possible
S. Korea = unification without war but with greatly reduced social cost than current projection
Japan = return of abducted Japanese citizens and stability in Korean paninsula
China = nuclear free pro-China regime without U.S. or U.S. affiliated army across the border
Russia = maintaining buffer state, similar to Chinese interest but not necessarily with China
Looks like a reasonably difficult simultaneous equations to solve.

the last NAP canceled that I know was the one between Poland and Russia in august of 1939 I don't understand why you think NK would ally US/NATO. Do you mean a coup to prevent future actions that may initiate a NATO invasion and ultimately unification?

yeah, my english isn't very good. NATO can organize an coup too, making the NK government friendly to them or achieving an unification.
an invasion is a huge deal, this is a country bordering china and russia at same time.
ok, i trust in this site

they can scream all they want
they dont have a slightest chance in an open conflict with the South.. USA tolerates the country (for unknown reasons) so they can live for now, but if that changes, they're goners..

North Korea is just desperate. They know if they cross the line, they get either bombed by the US or China is going to occupy North Korea to prevent escalation. A war would be suicide for them.
