Apparently an ultimatum was given prior to the ROKA returning fire, and USFK have also been placed on high alert.

South Korea isn't backing down from this, so what happens now is up to how Pyongyang responds...

Will most likely not escalate, considering it hasn't before. Even when SK has answered it hasn't.

Cant South Korea say that North Korea's action was a declaration of war and go wipe the North out? It would save everybody alot of hassle. All of NK weapons are super old so they wouldnt put up much of a fight.

There is this country called China that isn't going to let that happen. They don't want a war going on right next to them that ends with an America Ally being their immediate neighbor.

Casus belli has never been the issue. It's all the artillery aimed at Seoul (and now the fact that NK has nukes) that are the issue. But if you think NK would be a pushover you're welcome to take them on yourself.

Does anybody know if all that half a century old artillery north korea still works or if they even still have ammo for it?

I don't think SK is willing to find out. And once again, they have nukes in some form. And China, who back NK in the first Korean War. There is no "wiping them out".

Then couldnt SK just surround Nk with ships and airplanes and wait for NK to stare themselves out because they can get a rations until they surrender? Not a shot would need to be fired.

If that would work, why haven't they done it? Also, you might want to look at a map to see exactly why that isn't really viable.

SK has been helping feed NK for years. All this provocation is NK asking for more food and other supplies. SK, Japan and the US should stop helping NK and let China feed NK by themselves. It's their ally, not ours, after all.

Have Donald Trump dig a moat between NK and China. Also NK have artillery manufacturing technology. And ammo manufacturing technology. Also they have farming technology. But yeah, the waiting for the situation to resolve itself part of your plan, that's a good idea. You should tell SK.

SK should go to the UN and tell China to knock it off with NK or they will sanction the hell out of them. Either that or have SK and NK fight for another thousand years.

China has realistically no interest in getting in a real conflict with US or its allies, neither directly nor indirectly, so that's probably not the main worry if at all. I don't see how blockading and essentially trying to completely starve the NK population is a good idea, the civilians already suffer so much, and I don't think they'd exactly surrender either.

I'm also fairly certain that most artillery pieces that NK have in use don't even reach Seoul from the DMZ, those that do like one rocket launcher type and a heavier caliber self-propelled artillery gun can't cause much damage because of limited amounts and questionable condition. You also have to keep in mind the possibility to intercept ballistic missiles, however I'm not sure of those capabilities on the southern peninsula or the seas nearby.

If there would be a conventional war I'd argue it would actually be very one-sided, however that's just what I can think and not really a considerable opinion whatsoever.

As a note; isn't NK relying on humanitarian aid from western countries as well?

Also, SK is really not that interested in a war with NK. Even if there are absolutely no problems and NK falls over without firing a shot at anything, and China doesn't care and doesn't do anything either (Both highly unlikely), this only leads to SK having to deal with a gigantic influx of highly indoctrinated and by western standards pretty uneducated new citizens, a totally wrecked half of the country that will cost trillions to get in some sort of working order, and all sorts of other problems.

Currently, NK is mostly problem for people in NK. It is a pretty big problem for those, but noone on the outside has anything to win inside NK, and thus noone is very enthusiastic about doing anything about that. Thus, NK is allowed to continue to exist in this disgusting state, and everyone hopes that the problem will eventually solve itself in some way, or at least that it will be the problem of their successors. The food aids are a way of feeling a bit better about yourself by trying to help with the most severe symptoms, and a bribe to the NK leadership to preserve the status quo.

Sadly, there is really no good solution to this problem even if the will for it were there. NK is a toxic pile of problems that have grown to become pretty much unhandleable at this point.

I also want to point out that the conflict isn't the biggest problem, but what happens after like what Simberto pointed out.

China is on the security counsel and no one is going to sanction them over NK. Can we come back to the reality now where this isn't a problem that can be solved through military force?

Seoul is absolutely in range of conventional artillery. There are also cities in South Korea other than Seoul. No one argues that the whole affair wouldn't be terribly one sided, however the casualties would be still be incredible, from a modern, first world perspective.

Of course, the real question is, why on earth would the South want to kill their (figurative, and literal) brothers and sisters?

The conventional War would be rather short. The problem is that people forget how many people died in WW1 from utterly conventional weaponry. Oh, and NK likely has chemical weapons as well. Which they'd use. You're probably looking at around a million causalities in Seoul alone from the shelling. Billions upon billions in damage to the economy beyond the loss of life.

But the greatest problem (one Seoul has been planning about for 60+ years) is what happens after the Kim Regime is all executed. "Third World Hell Hole" doesn't begin to describe the state of North Korea. Which is why NK will never become part of SK. They'll be run as two separate countries. A limited Confederation may be possible after 40-50 years. Then you have 20 million malnourished, uneducated and politically indoctrinated people that are going to want to do everything in their power to leave. But you really can't let them.

This is all the result of the Kim Regime and the utter evil that they are. May the rest riddled with bullets.
