One of the more unfortunate imperial units is ft*lbs, or "foot pounds" which are commonly mistakenly written as ft/lb. Very much not a fan, but it is what it is.

Also, pound is in fact a unit of force. Slug, or mass pounds (lbm) are mass. 1 lbm * g = 1 lbf.

those units are widely used in the shooting community although yes ft/lb is wrong, it should be ft.lbf (or ft.lb for the lazy)

The Swedish law for what you can hunt uses the Energy at 100 meters measured in Joule along with the bullet weight and that it has to expand after hitting. So I guess it differs a lot.

Its exactly the same in Germany. Energy is calibrated at 100 meters called E100 and has to be above 1000J for seals and european roe deers and above 2000 for bigger game, like red deer.

Well, it's not exactly a discussion regarding this guy, and more of a discussion regarding how shitty the imperial measurement system is. Which is always valid.

As is always the case with these discussions, it seems to be more of a circle-jerk than anything.

I don't think we will ever change. There's no way to slowly implement it over time. Everything would get all fucked up the day the kids started learning metric and the adults are clueless. Plus I personally have a hard time determining how fast a speed really is in kmh among other things. I know that the speed limit here is 75 mph and if I go 85 I'm making good time. I would have to spend the rest of my life trying to do metric > imperial conversions in my head.

Guys take the imperial units discussion elsewhere. Or don't, but don't discuss it in the NK thread.

I don't think you would do those conversions for too long. Think of it like this, if you know an estimate of one metre, then one cm is 1/100 of it. piece of cake. mm, cm, dm, m. ect. just multiply or divide with 10. Bet you already knew it. Even if you needed to make some conversions, it should be any harder than for example converting 58,3 miles to feet or inches.

I remember when Finland switched to euro, didn't take too long untill I already forgot about our earlier currency and didn't need to make conversions anymore. Yeah I was young, but it didn't take too long from my parents either, or anyone I know.

USA most likely haven't switched to metric system not becouse of peoples' learning cabability, but more likely becouse it would be a huge huge investment to change all the road signs, car speed meters, school books and so on. And like you said, switching slowly over time would not work.

ps. respect the speed limits, if not for your own safety, then for the sake of others 10mph over the speed limit is way too much!

edit: woops sorry for the off-topic!

I do think you are vastly underestimating the stupidity, stubbornness, and willful ignorance of the average American. No hyperbole here - it's fucking appalling.

So apparently north Korea has cured aids, cancer, ebola, and the common cold with a new wonder drug. Truly incredible work.

Here's the breaking story:
North Korea said it has succeeded where the greatest minds in science have failed.
The authoritarian, impoverished nation – better known for pursuing a nuclear programme despite global criticism – announced on Friday a drug that it said can prevent and cure Aids, Ebola, Mers and Sars.
The secretive state did not provide proof, and the claim is likely to provoke widespread scepticism.
The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said scientists developed Kumdang-2 from ginseng grown from fertiliser mixed with rare-earth elements.
According to the pro-North Korea website Minjok Tongshin, the drug was originally produced in 1996.
"Malicious virus infections like Sars, Ebola and Mers are diseases that are related to immune systems, so they can be easily treated by Kumdang-2 injection drug, which is a strong immune reviver," KCNA said.
North Korea trumpeted the same drug during deadly bird flu outbreaks in 2006 and 2013.
The North's claim comes as rival South Korea fights an outbreak of Mers that has killed two dozen people and infected more than 160 since last month. There is no vaccine for the disease.

Well I mean, the South does have MERS and the North doesn't. Seems legit.

Agreed. The imperial system is still used because there is willful blindness to the idea of american exceptionalism. How many jokes about how the world doesn't want us butting in all the time? Yet, America still feels the need to be the loudest and most controlling. It isn't that the metric system is harder (it's not) or the people are dumber, its just a refusal to condescend to anyone for any reason because murica
