I must echo the "terrible execution" part. Where's civilization?? Or some of the classics like Galcon? Or the Portal series? I know they were nominated in the other thread, I nominated them..
Edit: Oh, I missed that each series gets a poll and then one of them is inserted into the bracket... Hmm, unconventional but fair. Props to you for that one. (But where's my Galcon and Angband, damn you! )
But ok, you did a shit-ton of work, so it's fine.
On the other hand, this is a popularity contest, so I don't mind people voting in a biased manner. It will work out nicely anyway.
And there's still very exciting stuff already.
Dwarf Fortress v Black and White. DF needs to win...

sad.
the results really show the age of a lot of voters. most aren't old enough to know how revolutionary some games were. Depends on each voter's criteria. Are they voting how well they stand up today, how revolutionary they are, or how much fun they had playing them? wolfenstein 3d beats out battlefield 2 in each of those categories, imo. the only logical reason battlefield 2 could get a vote is based on one fact only: they person voting doesn't know anything about wolfenstein 3D. I remember playing this game when it came out, and it was SOOOO much better than anything that was out there (looking back on it, I was 7 and I do not understand why my adult neighbor gave it to me and why my parents let me play that...). Yet for some reason Doom is the only one that gets remembered today (which was merely a slight upgraded and reskinned). I'm pretty sure this is age driving this.
Could partially be popularity driving this too?
I remember playing Doom, Doom 2, and Quake 2 but I did not play Wolfenstein 3D until recently.

W3D was original, and involved shooting zombie nazi's.
Doom was a reskinned W3D.
Same thing results in Commander Keen losing

You're right! Sorry. I didn't realize Civ 2, that I nominated, lost to Civ 4. Same for Portal. Edited my previous post.
You still missed two of my favourite games that no-one else has heard about

I think the reason is I've never heard of the game, and looking up "Galaxy Conquest" on Wikipedia and Google yielded no results. Also, your post was on page 13 (!!!) and by that time, I was kind of in a "screw that game" state of mind.

I can understand the frustration ^^
I'm still confused as to when one votes for what, though. Looking at the brackets, they look much better than the actual polls (that I was going by). So, even though you have the brackets, you could edit the OP to emphasize that people ought to be looking at those instead of the polls.
As for Galcon: http://www.galcon.com/classic/history.html ^^ Try the 87 version with a few friends, it's glorious back-stabbing.
P.S. Songs will be written about Tetris v Pac-Man.
|
That's understandable. The first round was going to be confusing since not all games would be present in the polling. I think the next round of voting will go much smoother, since all games not yet eliminated will be available for voting.
|
No King of Fighters 2002UM or XIII? Also no Street Fighter EX2+? I am disappoint Also no Z or Machines for RTS!!!
|
UPDATE - 12/20/12: Let the second round of voting begin! With this round, all games will have been in a poll at least once. So let your voice be heard, your vote count, and may your favorite game continue on!
|
Done. Went through and voted on the ones I felt informed enough about to pick a winner
I predict EVE to be the darkhorse here.

Oo... your memory clearly doesn't serve you well. Doom is much, much more advanced than a simple "reskin". Not to mention that the whole "science meets mythology" with shooting down cyborg demons with plasma rifles is much more original than shooting nazis.

Yeah, the graphics engines aren't even the same.........I mean, Wolfenstein 3D will always be the game that got me into games, but Doom was a pretty massive step forward.

I wonder who's gonna win between dota2 and league of legents. :D

All of you choosing between Angband and DQ, go download Angband right now: http://rephial.org/ You'll love losing more than in Dwarf Fortress. And in years from now, when you stroke your beard right before administering the killing blow to Morgoth, you'll know you've spent your life well.+ Show Spoiler +You guys all suck Well, not the 2 other guys that voted Angband, but the rest of you, you do.
Some other comments
- Never before in my life have I used the meme "hurr durr" but it's so very appropriate for a faceoff between Mario party and Angry Birds. - I'm also proud to announce that I'm old. I voted for Duke Nukem over TF2. - Why not just rename Amnesia "the Day9 screaming game"...
+ Show Spoiler +Voted against Black and White solely because it beat Dwarf Fortress. Yes, I'm bitter

No love for Operation Flashpoint.
|
There are a ton of matchups that would be my finals that are meeting this round and it makes me sad.
|
Resident Evil 4 beating Silent Hill 2 in the horror category is quite saddening. Resident Evil 4 was great but it's difficult for me to imagine someone playing through both games and concluding that RE4 is superior - particularly as a horror game.
|
can't believe people voted for Golden Eye over Perfect dark, its like did they even play the games. Also really sad to se Atlantis go.
|
It should be illegal to vote for Freelancer over Freespace 2.
Not kidding. Freelancer isn't even a wart on pimple on the arse of Freespace 2. None of the games in that category besides Sim City 2000 are.
Some really lovely games there though. Master of Orion 2, Shining Force, UFO Enemy Unknown. Sigh. So many fun games...
