I don't have any new nominations. There's a lot of games already mentioned that I've never had time to play so I don't feel qualified to make any claims to know which game is best. Moreover, games that I played when I was younger are remembered more fondly than games I played more recently but I know my tastes have changed over time. In particular I have less time for gaming now. Hence my fondness for RPGs has decreased. I remember that I really enjoyed Knights of the Old Republic but I didn't have a PC when Planescape Torment and Baldur's Gate 2 were released and I haven't had times to play long RPGs recently, which includes games like Fallout 3 New Vegas and Skyrim. I'm also not sure what qualities a 'best game' should have, even within one genre. Should it be the most enjoyable? The most rewarding perhaps? Some games only become fun when you have put time into them to learn them. And with any game that has a heavy multiplayer component the quality of the community will massively affect the game.

And where is the Action/Adventure category? Loads of people will want to vote for the Zelda games, and rightfully so. Anyway, the final vote will be hugely biased towards games made in the 90's and the first half of the 00's because of the age distribution on this site.

I agree with everything you said. But who could really call themselves qualified to judge something like this? No one has played all the games necessary to make a good call on what games are best. And how would you compare games from different time periods? In the end this is just going to be a popularity contest where games that had a wide distribution will win over games with a more narrow focus and modest sales. The difference between here and the TIME vote is that we have an audience that is more skewed towards RTS. Let's just turn in our nominees, vote and enjoy thinking about the games we play and used to play. My nominees for this is: Imperialism II Sensible Soccer

As someone pointed out already - "best" is an inexorably subjective term and/or measurement. There are so many considerations to factor in, not to mention the demographic represented in this population, that the results of the contest will likely not be indicative of well...anything. But rather than fight a losing battle I suppose I'll nominate some games that may get overlooked otherwise. Classics: Yar's Revenge Joust Galaga Tetris Super Mario Bros. 3 1942 Adventure: Little Nemo Dream Master Wizards and Warriors 2: Ironsword Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past Toe Jam & Earl Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Diablo 2 Blaster Master RPG: Star Ocean 1 Earthbound Lagoon Paladin's Quest 7th Saga Soulblazer Flight/Flight Sim: TIE Fighter Pilotwings RTS: Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness Fighting: Street Fighter 2: Turbo Killer Instinct Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Shooters: Starfox R-Type 3 Einhander Strategy: Utopia Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen Populus Deadlock MMO: Ultima Online Everquest Action: Metal Gear Solid Metal Warriors

Also, if there ever will be an adventure category, I'd nominate Sanitarium. That game was amazing. For FPS, I loved Cod4: MW the most. For RPG, I think Mass Effect, Dragon Age Origins, and KOTOR 1 and 2 are also good games.

Fighter: Virtua Fighter Series, goddamn are these games deep and good and hard to master and just generally awesome. Platformer: Earth Worm Jim, still funny as hell to this day. Other: Zone of the Enders 2, visually the most awesome game I´ve ever played (relative to other games of its time and taking personal style preferences into account as well), one of the few single-player games I finished since my Sega Mega Drive/Genesis days.
