(In Swedish)
+ Show Spoiler +

DreamHack 2012
DreamHack EIZO Open Stockholm, Sverige - 21-22 april
DreamHack Summer 2012, Jönköping, Sverige - 16-19 juni
DreamHack EIZO Open, Valencia, Spanien - 21-23 september
DreamHack EIZO Open, Bukarest, Rumänien - 27-28 oktober
DreamHack Winter 2012, Jönköping, Sverige - 22-25 november

So a quick translation: DreamHack just announced that they will show their tournaments on the Swedish National TV channel.

The announcement doesn't say specifically what games will be shown, but one could guess for the biggest one (sc2).

They also say that they won't show all of the games, just the more relevant ones.

Conclusion:
This is just great, afaik Sweden will now be the second country in the world to show E-sport on terrestrial TV. Go Sweden!

EDIT: If a moderator wishes to move this to SC2 general - please feel free to, just that it doesn't say for sure that it will be SC2 that will be broadcasted so I put it here.

Ye, China might be the second country, was actually thinking of Sweden being the second country to show Starcraft 2 on television, think that's legit.

Oh, so they move from having it only on SVT play (online) to also having it on their usual channels.

ESL TV once was a real TV channel in Germany iirc. I never really watched it, but I think they did show some eSports before. Now it only exists online.
If you have a good reason to disagree with the above, please tell me. Thank you.

Great news! I guess it fits that sweden is one of the first in Europe

Btw, they also showed the IEM WC in german television on ZDF Kultur (Part of one of the two big state channels in germany). Only the grand finals afaik, but they even showed CS apart from SC2 and LOL (take casted the sc2 final).
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

unfortunately i cannot consider that a post. so you saying use the search function is completely pointless. my own post contradicts this but, perhaps posting on topic would be more helpful yes?

Not that we really care what you consider to be a post or not but it, in fact, is a post. On Topic: don't have 2 threads for the same thing!

Dreamhack 2010 finals were sent on SVT 1, so it's not the first time.

Currently I think its only been online streams (svtplay) on their websites produced by the same company, not on actual TV.
Now some matches will be sent on real TV hours! (How I understood it) With a much broader audience and pretty much introducing e-sports to the whole swedish population.

Wow, finally something on Swedish television worth watching!

Serious though, I think this could be really cool depending on what they actually broadcast. That is, will they have their own commentators (in Swedish mind you) and schedule or will they simply broadcast the regular stream (which I hope they do). I seriously doubt SVT knows what makes a good esports event/coverage. I want this basically to be the stream broadcasted on TV, nothing more, nothing less.

Sweden had a fifa tournament on TV4Sport during 2009 I believe, for 100k SEK or something. That channel does not have the same viewerbase as SVT1 or SVT2 has, but we don't know for sure that it will be aired on one of the main channels yet.

I think this is good in the sense that it makes e-sport more mainstream. However, the people that are interested in this are way more likely to have a PC at home than a TV so Im not sure who their target audiance is. I prefer to watch it on my computer where I have more freedom compared to TV.

I searched the forums first, didn't find anything. So I created this thread. When I finished writing it I searched again and found the one you linked but thought it was poorly done so I kept mine in hopes that it would be the main one.

To explain a few things, to my knowledge there has never been any E-sport related matches broadcasted on Swedish television before.

Also, DreamHack has been showing E-sport on SVT's (Swedish national television) online feature, SVT play ever since 2009 though, now they will also send some of the matches on terrestrial TV.

I was there live, so I cannot confirm 100%, though I got texts saying specificly that they saw it -on TV-.

That was TV4 news, iirc, in Sweden making an article about DH in general and the massive amount of crowd it gathered, not the actual games where broadcasted as a whole with commentators and such.

The "oil money" thing is a bit overrated in Norways case.
you see, the politicians are using the money so irresponsibly there is not going to be any money left within 10 years or so....
They invested half of the money saved up in the stock market, so yes i would rather have esports on TV rather than that my politicians gets a fatter salary if that is what you are wondering about.
(the money goes mostly to administration we don't need)

The ESL bought the studio off NBC's 18h a day electronics and internet show "Giga" when they got shut down.
NBC Giga showed e-sports live on TV but never in the form of constant tournament coverage. You could technically count that though. They even had a real "Giga e-sports" show.

No, its an ordinary public channel that airs a great variety of programs. I think its similar to DR1 och TV2 in Denmark.

In Germany they always showed the GigaLiga on Giga, which was a german television station for games only.
The tournaments were actually pretty huge, they showed Counter Strike, Unreal Tournament, Fifa, SC:BW and probably 2-3 more that i cant of right now.

GigaLiga had all the german top pros (ToT)Mondragon(,FisheYe[pG],methos[pG],GoOdy and many more plus ret. :D
Was a big 32-player tournament with groups and playoff for top16.

I always loved to watch it, also because there were games basically every week and not just for one 2-3 day tournament.

Well then, lets collectively abandon that failboat of an OP and join this one?
Awesome news. One of the few times I think the TV-part of Swedish public service is doing something right.

Will the whole broadcast be live in collaboration with the online stream? I can't imagine that they will have 8 hours of StarCraft on a regular TV channel. Don't terrestrial TV channels have like 30 mins to 1 hour time slots?

Nope, I added on a later reply that only some of the matches will be broadcasted on TV, there will still be the regular streams (Twitch.tv likely) and then the SVTplay show (Swedish televisions online show feature).

Well its Swedens National Television that will broadcast it, which of their channels the show will appear on is not being mentioned. Their biggest channels (SVT1 and SVT2) is most likely out of the picture.

It's a bit misleading. Afaik this is going to be broadcasted on the TV channel's web page rather than on TV.
Atleast that's what it sounded like in the link by op.

Edit. Yeah for sure, this is definitely what they say.
It's not on national television.
They still receive a huge amount of traffic (I mean my mom who's 60 check that page for reruns), but it's not like in Korea.

Depends completely what channel they will broadcast it on. SVT1 a sunday evening may very well have up to about 500k viewers. But its completely impossible for me to estimate viewers without knowing the channel.

You are wrong, the regular DreamHack show on SVTPlay (been going since 2009) will still occur, and some of the major matches will ALSO be played on terrestrial TV. Hellspawn (some kind of employee of DH) clearly stated on his twitter that there will be a show on terrestrial TV.

Wow, nice job Swedish people! Now just make the concept jump over to the UK for me and I'll love you all. Definately a nice step forward, probably inevitable eventually, but still awesome news.

I really hope they show the official broadcast with English casters. Casting in Swedish sound super weird and the broadcast quality on SVT play has in the past been sub par to say the least.

Otherwise great news, really looking forward to it! :D

I did a translation of the press release in another thread that got closed. So for those curious what it says:

The esports tournament in Starcraft II, DreamHack EIZO Open Stockholm, is arranged this weekend 21-22 of april in Annexet (t/n the arena for the event) and is the beginning for DreamHack's esports season 2012. The competition is also the beginning for a deepened collaboration between DreamHack and Sveriges Television (Swedish national television).

Sveriges Television has broadcast esports from DreamHack twice a year since winter 2009. During 2012 there will be more live broadcasts of esports than ever before. Sveriges Television will broadcast live from five of DreamHack's competiotions during the year, beginning this weekend. This is to be compared with two events during previous years.

The goal is to primarily broadcast on SVT Play (t/n the online service), but this year SVT and DreamHack will also broadcast esports live on the terrestrial network in one of SVT's channels during the year.

- The interest for livestreaming of esports is radpidly growing and we are very happy to be able to, in collaboration with SVT, offer more from DreamHack's competitions during the year. DreamHack prodcuces hundreds of hours of live broadcast esports every year and SVT will broadcast select parts of the best matches, says Tomas Hermansson, esports representative at DreamHack.

The first broadcast is this coming weekend, where SVT will broadcast the seven final games of the Starcraft II tournament from Annexet in Stockholm on SVT Play.

- SVT Play will be our exclusive media partner for the Swedish titles for the DreamHack EIZO Open tournament. They will also broadcast the most prestigious final matches in several international tournaments from our two big festivals DreamHack Summer and DreamHack Winter, says Fredrik Nyström, media representative at DreamHack.

Agree so much on this lol.

By the way do you guys think it'll be on SVT1 or SVT2? Not 24 right? TT Cause I haven't heard anything about what channel it's gonna be aired at and according to me it's a pretty big deal if it's the one or the other. What do you guys think?

They might show LoL only. It is probably the most popular game there.

I can tell you for sure that LoL isn't the most popular game at DreamHack, atleast not tournament wise at previous DH's. In fact, I don't think they've even had a LoL tournament at DH, only HoN and maybe some smaller DotA2 tournament.

I think they have some kind of contract with HoN or some mutual sponsors or whatever, since they just announced a 60 000 $ Heroes of Newerth tournament to be played on DreamHack Summer.

OK, but the OP only states that some matches will be shown on SVTPlay, which is NOT national television.
That's the web page that the 15 people in this country who don't know how to download use to watch reruns.
If hellspawn's said that it'll be on terrestrial television as well, then fair enough.

This...is ...awesome. Hope it come's to the Sweedish/Danish TV3 at some point as well, so us Dane's can enjoy us some SC2 mainstream. :D. (I know all the arguments why it cant be on tv, but you could look at it like a comercial, it will spread the word about esports.) [Notice the "esports" not e-sports... ]

One small step for scII gamers...one giant leap for gamerkind. Or something slightly smaller like that ;D

Edit: read that its not on the tube, but on computer screens o.O

DoubleEdit: Whew, first edit redacted. Corrected below - broadcast on national tv. A great leap for gamerkind indeed.

also, anyone else notice that when you type in gamerkind it will sometimes auto spell to "gamer kind" instead?

SVT has since 2009 covered dream hack events on their online service/channel, but this year will be the first that they also broadcast on regular TV!

Oops, my mistake, didn't know about that.

Also, an update from SVT's website (http://svt.se/2.155436/svt_e-sport)

On sunday, the last seven matches of this weekends DreamHack Open Stockholm will be aired on SVTPlay (on the web) and svt.se/esport.

The pressrelease also says that DreamHack Summer will be the first DreamHack to be aired on terrestrial TV.

It is the network paid for by the state aka the tax payers, so they show stuff for everyone even if the audience won't be that huge. It would not have been picked up by any of the commercial channels.

Well, atleast SVTs are better then the ones aftonbladet used, but yes they should really use the english commentators.

Why english? If you want the english commentary just watch the free HD stream with day9 or mr bitter or whichever excellent caster they are sure to get. I think it both makes sense and would be fun and interesting to get to hear swedish commentators for once (if you chose to! remember you can still watch the free HD stream with excellent english casters if you prefer)

As long as they don't have ignorant reporters on site, which they do have from time to time, I'm all for it. This will hopefully make more people understand that there's more to it than just the game.

The ESL bought the studio off NBC's 18h a day electronics and internet show "Giga" when they got shut down.
NBC Giga showed e-sports live on TV but never in the form of constant tournament coverage. You could technically count that though. They even had a real "Giga e-sports" show.

God I miss Hannes and Etienne XD

Yep, they showed Broodwar, Warcraft 3, CS 1.6, FIFA 20XX and other stuff on free TV, live as well as recorded(the games). There was no real tournament coverage, but events like the IFNGs were enough, imo. And back in the day, there were barely any important tournaments going on anyway.

Because the whole experience that is Starcraft can not be fully appreciated by "new" people if it's some random shitty swedish guy around his 20's with 0 knowledge about how to explain SC2 to a broader audience. And also because anything in swedish just sounds dull and boring(though this is my personal opinion ). Have you ever listened to swedish commentators in hockey or football? I come from a multi-cultural family and it's just sad to watch events cast in swedish cos there is just no "flare" to the language, because swedish is un-bendable(I'm sure there is a academic word for this, when you can say the same word in like 20+ different way).
Listen to some of the english hockey commentators or spanish soccer commentators and you have a WHOLE DIFFERENT experience, this is exactly why SC2 has to be cast in english by people that do it for a living on a regular basis and are professional.

What he said.

I basicly just want the non-followers of the SC2 scene to get a good first impression of it, and not one with some really bad swedish commentators (All I've listened to have been terrible).

While it's true that the swedish casters are not as good as the english casters I don't think the quality of them matters that much since first time viewers won't be able to tell the difference. The broadcast will be directed towards people that are not that familiar with Esports. The focus should be in getting first time viewers to understand and appreciate the game.
A friend of mine got into sc through SVT's (or was it AB's?) broadcast of DH winter. While he didn't understand all that much he got very interested. It was easy for him to understand since it had the casters explaining everything in Swedish and the production was nice.

Well, Swedish state owned television is known to broadcast crap very few people care about, so this is hardly a suprise. If we're lucky it'll help e-sports gain some new fans, but I'm sure that's women's floorball fans were hoping as well.

They are also known for having the most viewed channel in the country(or maybe TV4 is right now) and the most viewed shows. Here are some numbers from last month: http://mms.se/_dokument/rapporter/manad/Månadsrapport_2012-03.pdf

But we don't know if it is on SVT1 or SVT2, it might be on SVT24 or something which would suck.

They will have their regular web feature (SVTPlay) showing the tournament as usual. Also, svt.se/esport will also show some coverage, though I'm guessing it will be in Swedish.

Pretty sure none of this is available for people outside of Sweden. At least it's the case for SVTplay.

Hey, so DH is now over, congratz to Thorzain for getting another major 1st place, he deserves it and probably needed it more than any other non-korean player. Must have been some kind of national pride for Sweden having a Swedish player winning this event. And considering it was broadcast on national TV, eSports and SC2 must have got a pretty good exposure for the Week-End.

Does anyone knows if videos of what was broadcast on TV are available? Was it the exact same content as on the stream? Was there a mention of Thorzain's victory in any Swedish news program on Sunday evening?

Shortly said: does anyone has got any feedbacks concerning the exposure the event received on Swedish TV?

I can't recall this particular event being televised, someone please correct if I'm wrong. It was available via a stream on SVT play but not on the actual TV. I think they will televise the final Dreamhack event which will be hosted in Jönköping. And again, If some fellow swedish person know better/anything else and I'm wrong please correct me.

And blocking ads while watching an esports event... I don't really know how to respond to that.

Why would you watch it on TV, with ads and all that shit. When you can watch a stream and block said ads...

Are you actually still paying for cable...?

There are ads on stream too, besides it's awesome because new people will open there eyes to E-Sports and it will be generally accepted as any other Sport.

There are no ads on SVT, it's a Public TV network (Like the BBC) available to everyone in Sweden (and most of the Nordic countries).

But as stated by others this event was only shown on svtplay (stream).

And no mention of Thorzain's victory in any national news?

Considering they broadcast the event (even if it's only on their own stream and not on TV) and a Swedish player takes first place, I would still have expected a few words about it or something. It would be a really big step for e-Sports if some countries (through their most mainstream media) were to start recognizing e-Sports champions as "worthy" champions for the whole nation to be aware of.

Edit: Holy crap, the guy basically owned that event like a BAWSSS !!!! Show him more love !!!

Swedish media hyped e-sports like a year ago or more when Jinro was hot. When things started trailing off and growing less popular I guess they re-prioritized.
