I am about to go to the US (L.A. specifically), and due to everything being relatively cheaper there as opposed to the consumer hellhole that is Australia, I've decided to buy some suits during my visit - I'm one of those lucky few who fit into suits off-the shelf. Now, I have two single-breasted suits already, one navy and one tan, but both are linen; thus not the most versatile or practical.
My current plans are to look for an expensive but really good all-purpose formal suit (because hey, if you're doing to wear one suit mostly it had better be a good one), ideally a double-breasted peak-lapel navy Zegna suit, but that is quite specific and I have little idea of where to go and what to look for in other options. Can anyone offer some helpful advice as to what to look for in a suit and where to go to acquire said suit (and maybe other, less expensive suits as well)?
A little personal info: Asian, tall (6'5"), not lanky but not fat either, not rice-field-Asian-dark but definitely not pale. I don't like looking 'cool' (e.g. I hate skinny ties); traditional badassery is more my thing.
I just have a question. Are you sure you completely fit into an off the rack suit? I pretty much haven't seen anyone in my entire life that completely fits into a suit just off the rack. By that I mean your shoulders are hugged by the suit, not slouching (probably the easiest part because you buy the suit to fit the shoulders). Sleeves are the right length, waist is tapered, sleeves are trimmed, pants hit right above the shoe - little or no break, pants slimmed down? Those are the questions that you need to be asking when you wear a suit out. I'm not trying to question you or anything, but just trying to make sure.
That being said, I've seen someone in a Gucci suit (obviously expensive but not tailored - let me say the suit fit, but definitely wasn't tailored.) that just got destroyed by someone wearing a suit by Zara, but he put ~100$ into properly tailoring the suit to fit his body. A good tailor can just make a ~250$ suit look like $1000. If you can afford the expensive then go for the expensive, but I can't stress the fact that the fit is way more important than the price.
There is a place online called Indochino that sells custom suits for a relatively cheap price. They even offer to remake the suit if it doesn't fit properly. For $400 you can't go wrong with a custom like that; I've heard glowing recommendations from all my friends that have ordered from them.
Also, read this Guide to Suits.
Also, skinny ties are not about being "cool" . We're transitioning into skinny ties now, even some of the less conservative wall street management is adopting the look. With that said, keep the skinny to a reasonable amount.
Anyways thats just my thought. Hope it helps!

Just an FYI for anybody looking for some nice shoes -- last Tuesday I bought a pair of brown Allen Edmonds Kenilworth shoes from a warehouse seller on Amazon for $160. They arrived yesterday, and despite being listed as used I can't tell that anyone has ever so much as put these shoes on. Check it out if you're in the market for some nice shoes. The discount definitely depends on the style and color (AE Fifth Avenue in walnut was basically full price from the same seller, so I'm holding off on that for a sale)

Do sperry's rub the back of other people's heels and will this problem eventually go away when they are broken in better?

I'm trying to get a "korean look" (I'm Chinese) or more fashionable look and hopefully will be upgrading my glasses soon. I kind of like the long wavy, layered hair that usually hooks to the extreme right or extreme left, but I'm also up for short, styled and layered hair also. Any advice? Edit: Bisu's the one on the right btw
Just open the button on the cuff, fold the stiffer part upwards and push them up your arm.
If it's not a relatively tight shirt it's going to be freaking annoying because the sleeves will always slip down your arms.
Ordered a leather messenger bag from http://www.farhorizontraders.com a while ago and it arrived last week. Seemed to be of pretty good quality and looked really good.
+ Show Spoiler +
Unfortunately I ordered the 16x12 version and it was too large for me, I'm terribly skinny and a bag of this size just looked odd on me, having it exchanged for the smaller version now, can't wait to start using it.

Can anyone recommend good retailers/sites for smaller men?
I'm 5'6" and 135-140 lbs, 28inch waist. I frequently fall right into the size gap between children and adult clothing at many stores; it is very difficult for me to find a good fit. Men's clothes are too wide through the waist, children's are too tight on the shoulders/chest/thighs. I'm done growing, so I can't really 'grow into' anything short of building muscle.
With the more casual student/collegiate/athletic clothing that I typically wear, I can get away with a mediocre fit. However, I'm starting graduate school soon and am looking to develop a more professional wardrobe.
Thanks!

Yeah dressing well and being comfortable with what you wear is important......

depends what exactly you're looking for, clothing wise. pants, shirts, what?
Speaking of, what kind if pants do you wear in the snow (not on a mountain though)? Adding winter things to my wardrobe and it hit me that all my chinos are really thin

Pants, shirts, jackets, ties, shoes... My wardrobe currently consists of jeans, shorts, a few khakis/random 'gearhead' pants, running shoes, vibram fivefingers, sandals, ski boots, bike shoes, cycling clothes, running clothes, ski gear, etc etc...
Basically casual student clothing + a lot of athletic gear. Very few 'nice' clothes.
I currently live in Utah, moving to Seattle in August. The winters here get pretty damn cold and snowy, but I generally just wear jeans to and from school/work. I have some waterproof shell pants that I can wear over other things during very nasty storms/cycling in the winter/etc.
Seattle is less cold, but more wet. I'll probably be investing in a nice rain jacket/hard shell. Maybe something by Mammut or Arc'Teryx.

At my work desscode is such a big deal because we work towards or with big companies so it's always costumes. And everytime you go ut on a pub u must have at least jeans and a nice shirt. And when people go out to eat on a restaurant ppl wears mostly nice cloths. And people judge you if you have "ugly cloths" and what not. Just had to say this >-<,

I'm planning to buy some dress pants. I don't have a never ending stream of cash so ideally I want to be able to mix them with some of my other clothes.
So, basically I'm wondering if it will look okay with gray pants to a black wool coat come winter? I'm thinking a somewhat darker shade of gray will look ok. Too light gray will probably look dumb. Any thoughts?

Can anyone tell me why simple, well made, classically styled clothing is so much more expensive than most of the stuff you find in store?
I went looking for a simple woollen coat for winter. I ended up with this beauty from marcs + Show Spoiler [Not me, I am way sexier :P] + It cost a pretty penny but it fits, looks and feels incredible. It has become my standard work coat for winter. Now I looked for weeks to find this style. Every store had coats with zips and bizzare inner hoodie things and they were all so much cheaper than what I ended up with. Why? I mean this is a classic style which never goes out of fashion but it was damn near impossible to find. Just seems weird to me.
I guess, you get what you pay for includes styling then? Oh well, I am very happy and I swear this looks good on everyone. Even my mates who prefer to shower weekly look good in it. If you can afford something similar, I highly recommend it.
