The suit with the pants and some nice walnut shoes and belt still looks colourful and light. I know navy is worn in a lot of the places I visited in Europe, but I wont doubt you in saying Germany is different.

I'll ask some friends who work in more formal setting like law and finance if it's different there.

Granted, in Korea, the look was super hip with the youngsters and they pulled it off well. Khaki's with cuffed pant legs and a blue blazer and some V-neck underneath was the norm.

i think an unstructured navy blazer is pretty much the most awesome piece in anyone's wardrobe. can be dressed down as a casual jacket, can be dressed up formally. so good mengs.

I'm not particularly tall only at 173cm, and a year ago I bought my first pair of height-increasing shoes by accident because I only skimmed over the description on the website. Nowadays, I wear them exclusively in professional settings. With this new pair that arrived just yesterday, I stand at a little over 177cm so that's almost 2 inches. I don't wear them around family or friends, but they're a nice little confidence booster in a business setting. Of course, they're made so that you can't tell that someone's wearing them; they look completely normal from the outside.

Should I wear the vest to the luncheon? It's not for a job or anything. It's honoring Robert Gates, former US Secretary of Defense, and I'm representing a club so I need to look good and act smart. I can't decide if the vest would be too much here or not. To me, the vest seems like an accessory to make yourself look different (better), so I'm not sure what situations are appropriate for all 3 pieces. However, I've read a 3 piece suit is acceptable anytime, it's just an older look that isn't as popular as it used to be. What do you guys think? When's a 3 piece suit acceptable? When is it not?

I am almost 30 now and I weared a suit exactly 4 times in my life. Three times because my mother made me so: for two immatriculations (high school and university) and the final exam from the high school - and once for kinf of a joke activity with my friends (and I got to keep my hiking shoes at least ). And that is it. Dressing as I want has become an importatnt part of my life since I left my parents' home ten years ago. I do not own a single shirt and my whole wardrobe is a couple of outdoor pants and a lot of t-shirts, mainfly from the "clothes for workers" store, 5$ each. Some people would still keep telling me: but you have to dress for X to be successfull. No, I don't. Everyone was wearing a suit for the final exam from the university (i am not sure, how to you call it in English, it is an exam in front of a state-supervised committee, looks dead serious), I was wearing my stuff - yet I had the easiest time, because I had the most knowledge. And thies happens over and over. I want to impress people by who I am and what I can do, not how I look and I have been incredibly succesfull in this in my life. For many years, I do even have a side-job that consists of leturing people on astronomy (sometimes in broad daylight ) on a public observatory and nobody over there dares to say a word about my looks either. If I were offered a dress-coded job, I would gladly decline, no matter how much money would be in it. To me, being able to dress as I want to is one of the stepping stones (yet just one very small part) of my life dream that I am living now: freedom. It is more amazing that you can imagine. And I got married in style, too (Oh, the look on the city offiial doing the ceremony when he entered the room, that was priceless! The poor guy had no idea, what waits for hime inside. It has been 4 years and random people still talk about the wedding. We even got guests that we never saw before, they just heard baout us and wanted to see what happens, I our personalities get combined with osmething so serious as a wedding. Hell, they got what they wanted!)

Theres obviously cultural differences between dk and the us These days the only real reason to wear black is basically a tuxedo and even then it's no mandatory. Black suits are for undertakers and hitmen Go with something dark that isn't black and possibly structured. Navy or (if you don't like blue) charcoal are formal enough for almost any occasion while still retaining enough "coolness" to be worn to a party (that isn't black tie). Also, you might want to go for subtle patterns. Nothing too loud, but a subtle herringbone, birds eye pattern or pinstripes look very, very good. I already planned on wearing a suit, but my suit also comes with the vest (3 piece) and I've never worn the vest (mostly because I've only worn the suit to interviews and I don't think the vest is appropriate there.) Should I wear the vest to the luncheon? It's not for a job or anything. It's honoring Robert Gates, former US Secretary of Defense, and I'm representing a club so I need to look good and act smart. I'd say no. A 3-piece suit generally says: "I run this place". So unless you are the boss of the entire congregation or expect to be shortly I'd skip the vest. Maybe someone else thinks differently about this, it's just kind of what I've heard and seen so far. If you want to look really good, try something like this: Go for a spreadcollared shirt a fat knot in your tie (windsor). Get the dimple right. Wear a silk pocket square that complements your tie and/or shirt color. And go for cufflinks and match them to the watch you're gonna wear.

It is more amazing that you can imagine. dressing is communicating, how you dress is the first impression you give (and ofc. how you act) the next impression is what you say etc. dressing as you want is a good thing, everyone should do it. it takes much confidence to do so. i think many people got influenced by their parents negatively because the parents projected their image onto their children without letting them express themselfs. although sometimes that is needed since parents have more experience ofc. since dressing is communicating, dresscodes, between other reasons, are there to give off a picture of the company you work for. for example if everyone at a bank would dress very slopy, usually that would give you a picture of not caring and who would give somebody who is not caring their money? that's why i believe dresscodes have their place and are sometimes needed. the ideal would be that everybody at the company knows how to dress to give the right picture to customers but aparently many just don't know.

@Terloc, I'd skip the vest. 3 pieces are hard to pull off particularly as a younger person. They are kind of like pinstripes, you need a level of prestige to properly pull of a 3 piece suit @focus: yeah man, navy not being a staple in Germany blows my mind as well. How boring with everyone in tones of gray. You Germans should bring back the navy

Pinstripe just says "I mean business" and should be ok to the setting he wants to wear it to. 3-Piece is the sartorial elevation of yourself to the guy that's running the show.

I mean, foot-sweat on shoes is pretty awful stench. actually better than most any other shoe I own. since they're almost all made of leather, it's really hard to stink them up. keep in mind that I wouldn't try this with a pair of shoes that I planned to wear in a formal setting ever again. my AEs are pretty beat to shit. I store all of my non-leather shoes in the freezer during summer. (not joking.)
