Dear Tom,
Thank you for contacting me to share your comments regarding H.R. 3261, the Stop Online Piracy Act. I understand your concerns and appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.
Reasonable protections for intellectual property rights are critical to preserving jobs and ensuring the continued success of the U.S. entertainment and technology industries, but we must not stifle innovation by enacting burdensome and overly broad laws. Copyrighted materials, including music, movies, television shows, software, books and more can be easily—and illegally—obtained through file sharing networks, and we should continue to promote efforts to eliminate intellectual property theft. Fortunately, online piracy has declined significantly in recent years, thanks both to the closure of major illegal file sharing networks and rogue sites and to the rise of legitimate digital content providers.
As you may know, H.R. 3261 was introduced by Representative Lamar Smith (R-TX). This legislation would establish new laws to shut down "rogue sites" that infringe upon copyright protections and distribute unauthorized content. There are some concerns, however, that this legislation is too broad and will jeopardize copyright protections already in place. The private market has proven that it will innovate and provide attractive, legal solutions as technology continues to advance. As we move forward, our laws should not stifle creativity, but still provide artists, authors, and entertainers with protections for their hard work and ideas. This legislation was referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary, where it awaits further action. Though I do not serve on this committee, please be assured that I understand your concerns and will not support legislation that gives government the right to shut down websites or IP addresses without due process.

Again, I appreciate your thoughts and it is an honor to serve you in Congress. Your suggestions are always welcome, and if ever I may be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Though I guess that would be in it's current form, anyway. Still no reply from any of my other representatives through the submission form.
If that is Rep. Heck from NV, then I am in the same boat as you - no response from Sens. Reid or Heller yet. Reid supports it, though. I've emailed him a few times expressing my opposition, but he hasn't yet responded. He's usually good about responding, though. I've contacted him many times over the years.
Also, there is a growing boycott movement against GoDaddy for their support of SOPA. I'm planning to transfer my 5 domains from GoDaddy on the designated day.
Yeah, saying Senator was a brain lapse on my part. I haven't heard anything from Senator Reid or Heller yet, and I'm not sure if I will. I received an automated response from Rep. Heck within 10 minutes of my submission, and he sent his actual response in a very timely manner.
Don't have any domains myself at the moment, but I was thinking about starting a website within the next few weeks; I was leaning towards GoDaddy, but now I'll look elsewhere.
MPAA/RIAA claim to be protecting actors/actresses with SOPA, but here's one of the ones they claim to represent speaking out against this atrocious bill.

anyone who can profit from it. laws are made so people can profit from them.
QFT. Your post is the essence of truth today. Who writes banking regulation legislation? The BANKING LOBBY! Drug laws? The drug cartels write the laws to keep everything illegal so they make more money and launder it through ATF (same thing happened during Prohibition). Same with this internet bill, it is designed to strip our first amendment rights away from us. Congressmen don't have the time or inclination to write legislation 2000 pages long every month or so, all legislation is written BY lobby groups FOR lobby groups, which ends up taking away freedoms from the unelected masses.
Its important to me to point out that it is considered a bi-partisan bill. Both democrats and republicans helped create it and will vote on it... There are also people in both parties that oppose it.
Limited government. A lot of conservatives are running for office in the next elections. The biggest step to stopping SOPA is paying attention to your own rep. and upcoming elections. Make sure they have conservative principles (in terms of government regulation anyway... the rest is your opinion I guess). People need to band together and not divide on issues like these.
Obama has not said he will auto veto this either. If it is an unpopular thing though. He will veto it.
Now every god damn soccer mom and paranoid idiot is going to call congress and tell them to pass this shit.
Fuck.
I mean really?

Ok, seriously? I find that video actually scary. On the one hand, it is funny to see how many buzzwords(american jobs, stolen, internet criminals, illegal foreign websites) they manage to fit into 34 seconds of video. On the other hand, and maybe that is just me being from Germany, but i find the extreme nationalism in that video scary. Is that usual in the USA? "The evil illegal foreign websites are stealing our good american jobs, it is really only the evil outsiders who steal our hard work, and deceive the poor americans into buying fake medicaments", Plus the whole flag thing at the end.

A lot of ad campaigns in America use negative information instead of positive, especially in political ads. Instead of saying "SOPA will protect American creative property etc etc etc" (which would be bullshit, but happy bullshit) they go with the EVIL DOERS DOING EVIL DEEDS act. It's frustrating to see the apathy, I bring this bill up when my family is discussing politics and they basically say "Who the fuck cares, it's not a big deal, might as well censor the internet." Frustrating to see ignorance lead to apathy.

One of the best ways to control stupid/ignorant people is through nationalism (along with religion). That shouldn't be too surprising. Let's see what happens, maybe americans will prove to be less tools than what the rest of the world thinks of them. But I doubt it and we will probably have to deal with insane internet censorship very soon.

Those ads probably work on most people, look at the popularity of shit like jersey shore and the x-factor, most people are fucking morons and believe their government is always looking out for their interests when in reality it is quite the opposite.

Is a recording available?
The entire thing plus highlighted points are available on this Youtube channel:
Not sure if it has been brought up before, and I'm honestly not trying to trivialize the whole situation, but think about it this way: do you think ANYONE (including the US government) is going to come out ahead in a potential "war" (not talking about a literal war, ofc) vs. Google, Youtube, Facebook, Ebay and Amazon? Minus the fact that (AFAIK) US gov stores >70% of their data on Google's servers (imagine a situation in which Google goes HAI GUISE how much do you like those official government records? PROBLEM?"), the only thing I see happening is US creating a potential isolation from the rest of the world. There will always be either backwards enough or progressive enough countries with laws set up in a way in which servers and companies can be based free from prosecution, and then simply all the business will move there, with US and anyone else following in the footsteps of enacting SOPA-like bills being left on the proverbial desert island and suffer a huge blow to their economies.
Is this scenario viable? Or is it just wishful thinking by me?
