Kinda off-topic, but before reading this, I had always thought that go daddy was some sort of porn website. You learn something everyday lol. Also, can't believe nintento freaking supports Sopa (well, I can, but i don't want to). I understand why all of these gaming companies support the bill, but seriously, they're just going to lose sales from all the people who know they're supporting the bill. This Christmas is going to be the last time I get something from nintendo until they're name is off the list.

Maybe I won't be staying after all. GoDaddy is not for it, but not against it. I give them until next week to actively go against it or I'll still abandon them.
GoDaddy said in one of its first statements for supporting SOPA that it actually had a hand in the designing of SOPA. I don't care even if they SAY they don't support it... a company so out of tune with technology does not deserve business. Please, take your domains elsewhere.
Every major SC2 site is switching... Day9 + Sundance/MLG have already stated they're switching off GoDaddy.
I'm in an odd position because of my attempts to stick to my word. I've had qualms with them for years. I think their ad campaigns are horrible, their UI is really clunky, and they have already squelched free speech in the past (ratemycop incident). However, their support of SOPA was the final straw.
So I sent them an email outlining this, and how their support of such a horrible bill is just too much. I know that email won't be read. It might be noted when doing a count of how many emails they got complaining about SOPA, but I'm under no delusion that the CEO personally read my email and expects me to honor what I said. But I know what I said and I want to stick to it.
And so I said I'll leave if they support SOPA. They withdrew their support. I was kinda using this as an excuse to bail anyway, but what kind of person would I be if I say they must renounce SOPA or lose my business, they renounce SOPA and I still leave? That makes my threats meaningless.
So the stance I'm in now is I'll give them one week to actively go against SOPA in some meaningful way. A press release and a stance change is not meaningful. So I'll give them until 12/29 (the original date set for the mass exodus) to do something meaningful. Then I'll leave.
In short, I really want to leave, but doing so right now makes me a liar and I try to pretend to have honor.
You can pretend to have honor and whatnot, but supporting a company that had a hand in making the SOPA legislation, and whose CEO actively hunts elephants and really just doesn't give a fuck about his customers... kind of makes you a supporter of the dark side
Yeah, maybe. I still want out, I just want to do it on straightforward terms. I've not been a fan of theirs for years.
Good on you if you do get out. Remember to post back here and tell us which provider you chose to switch to! Namecheap is recommended a lot as being good overall in their service, and their CEO recently came out in full opposition of SOPA. They even have a coupon code SOPAsucks that gives some additional discount, rofl.
Thanks bro, +Rep for you =D
Discount Code: SOPAsucks -- let's get this Frontpaged on Slickdeals, this will really stick it to GoDaddy, as others have said they have till the 29th to oppose it. It's pretty obvious they also had a clear role in the development in SOPA, they mention it about 4-5 times albeit very subtle, by saying "[we] helped craft revisions." Cmon shaddy asses, you guys played a role in it all, do better or this does not save face.

My plan was to switch to Inmotion Hosting. They already host all of my sites, and I've confirmed that they do not use GoDaddy as a registrar (they use Melbourne IT).
I just don't understand how this legislation will actually go through successfully. The internet is world wide, not country wide. I mean look at china's attempts to censor the internet. If you aren't a computer noob (we are on TL, none of us are) then you'll be fine. Its not like a US law could stop pirating happening in Russia or any other country.
GoDaddy was originally spouting the same bullshit Lamar Smith and other Congress representatives were spouting in support of SOPA, it's to protect the public getting duped into buying fake products etc. Really? To protect people from buying fake Guccis? BULLSHIT. Everyone say to hello to MPAA/RIAA lobbying powers.
GoDaddy's original stance on SOPA: "This debate is about preserving, protecting, and creating American jobs, and protecting American consumers from the dangers that they face on-line," the statement reads. "US businesses are getting robbed and US consumers are getting duped." The company dismissed free speech concerns. "Not only is there no First Amendment concern, but the notion that we should turn a blind eye to criminal conduct because other countries may take oppressive steps in response is an affront to the very fabric of this nation."
GoDaddy's still defiant stance after being contacted about impending boycott: GoDaddy seems unimpressed by the boycott so far. They made the following statement to Ars Technica: "Go Daddy has received some emails that appear to stem from the boycott prompt, but we have not seen any impact to our business. We understand there are many differing opinions on the SOPA regulations."
As you can see, they were very rooted in their support of the bill from the get go, but that changed somewhat after they realized people were really gonna switch, but they already had their hand in the cookie jar far too long, and FAR TOO OPEN about it.
December 29th to vigorously or meaningfully oppose it, or I'm switching my one domain. Hopefully others with more weight will follow suit.

Yeah, is there anything people not from the USA can do to stop this bill?
Look at the list of companies in the US who do and do not support this bill and support them accordingly. Even if you aren't in the US, there are companies who you patronize by visiting their website or making use of their services. If they lose money because they are supporting this bill, it doesn't matter if that lost revenue comes from inside or outside of the country. Money is money and you can still hurt them.
In the video above (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJIuYgIvKsc) he actually says that the best way to help, is to email legislators in the US, and urge them to watch the video and to oppose SOPA because of the problem-reaction-solution criminal actions taken by CBS/CNet and co.
There are many easily obtained email lists of US legislators, and it only takes one time sending one email, just need to paste as many emails in the "to:" field as you can, I guess.
I'm not a particularly intelligent person, I have a lot of passion for life, music, technology..this seems an easy way to help - as to the effectiveness, maybe...maybe not..but its better than doing nothing.
this (SOPA) is such a disgusting bill (with its cousin, Protect-IP)
-.-

Really. GoDaddy is supporting the SOPA bullshit? Seriously?
Well luckly I'm switching away from them... I haven't been really using them other than for one domain because we bought it from there looong time ago. I've been using dreamhost atm oo
Emailing legislators is pretty pointless. They know what they're doing. They can be swayed by the effect of their stance on the votes and the income from lobbyists. Trying to reason with them about the actual situation is on the other hand useless. In light of that, polls and petitions probably matter more than emails which probably just gets filtered.
Oh godaddy did change their stance, just looking back on that press release, and lol they really.... seem to be trying to cover their asses
"Fighting online piracy is of the utmost importance, which is why Go Daddy has been working to help craft revisions to this legislation - but we can clearly do better," Warren Adelman, Go Daddy's newly appointed CEO, said. "It's very important that all Internet stakeholders work together on this. Getting it right is worth the wait. Go Daddy will support it when and if the Internet community supports it."
"has been working to.." <-- Oh really. "but we can clearly do better" <-- by "do better" you mean actually be against the bill, right? "Getting it right is worth the wait" <-- says the idiots who were for it in the first place?
Go Daddy and its General Counsel, Christine Jones, have worked with federal lawmakers for months to help craft revisions to legislation first introduced some three years ago. Jones has fought to express the concerns of the entire Internet community and to improve the bill by proposing changes to key defined terms, limitations on DNS filtering to ensure the integrity of the Internet, more significant consequences for frivolous claims, and specific provisions to protect free speech.
if he really fought to "express the concerns of the entire Internet community" and "improve" the bill they wouldn't be in agreement/want the bill to pass in its incomplete/wrong/etc state in the first place.
What bullshit
"As a company that is all about innovation, with our own technology and in support of our customers, Go Daddy is rooted in the idea of First Amendment Rights and believes 100 percent that the Internet is a key engine for our new economy," said Adelman.
In changing its position, Go Daddy remains steadfast in its promise to support security and stability of the Internet. In an effort to eliminate any confusion about its reversal on SOPA though, Jones has removed blog postings that had outlined areas of the bill Go Daddy did support.
basically hiding the old posts because they want to cover their asses to hopefully stop the backlash
"Go Daddy has always fought to preserve the intellectual property rights of third parties, and will continue to do so in the future," Jones said.

1 is useless but 10000 isn't. The problem is you need to believe others are supporting you to get message heard. Also donating to a campaign with a message against the acts are more effective, as are writing snail mail letters.
Polis pointed out that SOPA and Smith’s amendment already excluded certain operators of sub-domains, such as GoDaddy.com, from being subject to shutdowns under SOPA.
“If companies like GoDaddy.com are exempt, why aren’t non-commercial domain servers exempt?” Polis asked.

These guys are fucking snakes. This is just a PR stunt, switching their stance in less than 24 hrs after mocking all the people that were against SOPA. Fuck GoDaddy.

You should write a perl script that generates randomized collections of anti-sopa sentenses to email your local rep.

and have it email it from a random address of ~10-20 emails, and fire off every hour :D?

US Government (c)
Standard of our/my fucking goverrnment. Fucking assholes.
Captain Obvious here, but I'll say it anyway just so I can be satisfied: GoDaddy is full of shit and it's painfully obvious that their little change of heart is a lie. Everyone should still continue to boycott them and make them lose business. Make an example out of those assholes.

This.
I'm sure they'd say they're against it, and still actually be in favor of it, vote for/ give money in support of. Sure was a quick ''change of heart'' too
TB posted another video about this, this time in response to the "Be a HERO..." video:
Edit: I also want to bring into light the fact that the somewhat related ACTA apparently got approved in EU just a few days/weeks ago. Apparently it was brought up in a totally unrelated meeting so no well informed representatives had any real reason to be there and oppose it. It's christmas and I'm preoccupied with family stuff, but I'll share whatever sources I can find on this when I have the time (unless we need another thread for ACTA?). We need to fight against ACTA and PIPA too, not only SOPA.

Why would you want to make an example of even after changing their position we are still going to boycott? Think about the message that sends to the next corporation that is about to cave to the pressure. Why would they change their position if they will get boycotted anyway. They are a corporation, you can't blame them for not having any morals and only thinking about dollars and cents. We should be giving a ton of positive PR to Godaddy right now so that other corporations having something to look forward to if they switch sides.
