Others have said it better than I will here: TeamLiquid invented, is, and always will be ESPORTS (the good kind, and not the let's-make-money-on-SC2-eSports-business-venture). If you read TL, enjoy posting on the forums, or glean any sort of happiness from reading girl blogs, please consider how this isn't just an internet forum. You don't come in here, look at stuff, and leave. You make this your homepage, make friends in Mafia subforum, and even occasionally engage in well-moderated debates. I don't think people really understand how insane of a job TL does in making this place a safe and friendly place where we can share our love for the game (any game).
Though based on what I've seen here, they're fighting a losing battle because people ad block crying elephants how could you do such a thing you cruel, cruel people without souls.
Hmmm what? I've been following e-sports since like 2003 or 2004. It definitely does not begin and end with SC, much less TL. I'm not going to elaborate on that but come on... I know SC2 is a money cow for a ton of people and if you don't like that I can understand but you still fail to mention the other scenes that have nothing to do with SC.
I don't disagree that if you want to support a site and you don't mind the ads go for it, but at least don't try to make TL sound like holy ground.
It's a good site. It's fun to have a place that is well moderated and I wouldn't mind some other forums having the same type of moderation. But it's not a place where I magically made bunch of friends. Threads still turn into flame wars although people are a lot more passive aggressive about it here than forums where you can say anything and not get banned. People are still assholes to each other on a daily basis on the forum; etc etc. It's a normal forum, just with a little less hate than most other forums.
I know you went to some events and met some TLers. That's fine, good on you. But for the very large majority of people that visit TL it's another website with random members. I don't know anyone on here personally. I don't travel to events for several reasons (time, money, interest). All in all, it's just a website I like to browse. Nothing more, nothing less. And that's the case for a lot of people, I imagine.
Yes, the admins and staff do a good job, and congrats to them for that. They put out some good content. But it's not special in the amount of work people put into the site; every site tries as hard as they can do be great (well, that's not entirely true but the majority of people who care about their websites put in a lot of work). The biggest difference with TL from another similar site is the moderation.
Like I said, if you want to turn off adblock, do it. It's good thing for TL. But for a lot of people TL is one of many sites they visit; not a second home.

thanks for this thread. I myself wanted to create a topic about this, but couln't find the time yet to make a suitable OP.
Yes I have adblock on on TL. I tried 2 times already turning it off, once half a year ago and last week with the banner change I tried it again. But I just can't stand commercials. I've never seen commercials in the last ~ 5yrs and now having a flashy annoying banner on a site you frequently surf to is just too annoying. I would have to cut on surving the site in total unfortunately.
If it weren't on the top and wouldn't be _so_ annoying I could see myself trying turning it off again, because I _really_ would like to support TL in this way, but for now all I can do is support them on another way (e.g. buying the shirt when it finally comes out in a size for me and it's not gone already when I wake up..).

its gets a bit wierd that people say "hurting e sports!" and "helping e sports", hope it wont go to the lvl of "brotherhood".

1. Calling Nazgul "boy". 2. Complaining about ads in a forum paid for by advertising, run by a team supported by advertising, all about professional gaming, which is overwhelmingly funded by advertising.
Pretty amazing.

I have no problem with blocking ads on this site. Like said before they don't actually put any of they're revenue into esports.

TL wouldn't have sponsors if they weren't dedicated to excellence, Infact any team sponsored shows good business sense and good players, still can't make me like them though. I ain't unblocking and I ain't hating, I'll watch Ads when there is no other option. end.

ROFL the sense of entitlement people have on the Internet, and their pitiful attempts to claim the moral high ground. You hear the same arguments whether they're downloading fake coupons, (Wal-Mart, man, it's evil!) or pirating music (the music industry, man, it's bringing people down!) or movies (Hollywood, man!) or games (EA / Activision / etc, man!), or even just watching GSL for free (TvT, man, they don't deserve my money!)
It's all about fighting the man, man! It's all about principle, not because you're a self-centred cheapskate.

Honestly, it calls into question whether you've ever taken public transportation, bought their own food, or even left their room. It's like going to a dinner party and refusing to help wash the dishes, because they'll just get dirty again anyway.
Thank you for reading. This part is blown a bit out of proportion. You are picking on resoning of people with the basement dweller argument and this is a bit like in Godwin's law; you can't really have a prolonged thread about gaming without someone calling someone else a basement dweller. Macpo (the one most vocal on the last pages about blocking), me and a few others already said, that we would consider paying a subsciption for support and I am quite sure quite a few people would pay a reasonable ammount.
I can only speak for myself, but I respect all the work that is done here to make TL what it is; whether I block adds or not. This thread warranted responses from people blocking and not blocking; for me it is a choice to do so or not and no reason for a witchhunt.

I own a copy of every shirt TL has offered in the 4 years I've been reading it. That HAS to be worth more than a couple hundred ad impressions.
Advertising is offensive.I don't want to view ads, and I will not view ads. Not here, and not on any website. What TL should do is offer a premium account. Charge 5 or 10 dollars and have it come with ad-free browsing when you're logged in. I would gladly buy that AND continue using adblock. I have already bought similar features on other forums such as somethingawful.

I adblock most sites, but until I start experiencing popups or in-thread ads, I haven't yet on TL.

They didn't invent eSports, certainly, and I'm not going to jump in and claim BW/SC2 as the only "eSport" like Milkis had the misfortune to. But based on intense studies in ESPORTS science and etymology, TL did invent the word and concept of "ESPORTS," realizing what this phenomenon of commercializing the gaming industry was becoming in the name of serious business and then promptly giving it a silly name. Where do you think "hurting ESPORTS" originally came from? Some podcast or blog response Chill made to another blog that was serious about "hurting eSports."
I do agree that TL is, to some, just one of many sites. It is what you make of it. And it's harder to make it a home nowadays. Perhaps TL isn't a holy ground to you, but it certainly...used to be, to many people. Maybe that's where all this shock and horror is coming from - the people who have been with TL since then and still view it that way vs. the people who use TL as a news site (which is cool - it's a good news site. It just used to be a better, closer community).
