So! Survivor is back for its 23rd season. I am a huge fan and thought I'd start a discussion thread here in case (as i suspect) there are others floating around.
This season is borrowing from last seasons: -format (Redemption Island carbon copy) -location (back in Samoa for the umpteenth time) -players (Ozzy and Coach are back)
Since the show doesn't start until September 14th, I figure to get things rolling we can talk about the recently-announced cast. Overall it seems a bit younger than a lot of seasons. I don't know of any tribal gimmick, but I'm not 100% on that. I wrote down some former Survivors these cast members reminded me of when I watched the videos (before i read the bios).
+ Show Spoiler [cast] +===========Upolu Tribe=========== + Show Spoiler [Albert] +Name (Age): Albert Destrade (26) Tribe designation: Upolu Current residence: Plantation, Fla Occupation: Baseball/Dating Coach Personal claim to fame: I hit my first college home run off of a guy that was a 1st round draft pick. Inspiration in life: I'm going to go with the lead character from the movie "Bull Durham." Kevin Costner's "Crash Davis" exemplifies a lot of attributes I can relate to. He is a hero of mine because of how he goes about his business as a ballplayer. He's a life-grinder. Plus, he's colorful and full of wisdom. Hobbies: Poker, writing and exercise. Pet peeves: I have little to no patience for ignorance. People who are uninformed about something, yet insist to be opinionated about it, really irritate me. I also get bothered by mentally weak people. 3 words to describe you: Versatile, dynamic and resourceful. SURVIVOR contestant you are most like: I really like how J.T. managed to forge himself as a leader on Season 18 without being overbearing or bossy whatsoever. He commanded respect and led by example. Reason for being on SURVIVOR: I have a legitimate chance to win one million dollars. Also, I can prove to myself that I can beat all in a game of strength, strategy and will. Why you think you’ll “survive” SURVIVOR: I was a Division I college athlete as recently as four years ago. I am a tough guy to beat in challenges. I’m a team player and I don’t have a problem contributing to any construction, hunting, fishing or gathering. Why you think you will be the sole SURVIVOR: I know that I possess a unique combination of attributes that would make me a favorite in this game. I’m athletic and very socially adept. I’m calculated and self-aware. Ultimately, if you combine my awareness, physical strength and social calibration, I bring a lot to the table. Reminds me of: Adam (Cook Islands) + Show Spoiler [Brandon] +Name (Age): Brandon Hantz (19) Tribe designation: Upolu Current residence: Katy, Texas Occupation: Oil Tanker Crewman Personal claim to fame: My little boy, Elijah. Inspiration in life: Jesus, because he died for me. Hobbies: Shooting my guns, hunting and eating crawfish. Pet peeves: When I order some food and it’s not the way I want it or they forget my hot sauce. 3 words to describe you: Headstrong, bold and clever. SURVIVOR contestant you are most like: Probably Colby, Johnny Fairplay, Russell and Brandon. Reason for being on SURVIVOR: Financial freedom and to show everyone there is more than one side to the Hantz family other than being mean. Why you think you’ll “survive” SURVIVOR: I’m very strong and I can hunt. I like fishing and swimming and I can build. Why you think you will be the sole SURVIVOR: I’m very handsome, smart, cunning, manipulative and funny. Reminds me of: J.T. (Heroes vs Villains edition) + Show Spoiler [Christine] +Name (Age): Christine Shields Markoski (39) Tribe designation: Upolu Current residence: Merrick, N.Y. Occupation: Teacher Personal claim to fame: All the goals I have set for myself, I’ve accomplished. Inspiration in life: Emilio Zapata, a Mexican revolutionary who fought for what was right and fair for the people of his country. Also, my father, Vincent Shields. He is another benevolent leader, who always treats people fairly, never judges others and is a great teacher of everything logical. And of course, my mother. She taught me how to be soft, colorful and strong. Hobbies: Traveling, reading and exercising. Pet peeves: When people don’t wait their turn, when people don’t peel the price sticker off the bottom of their shoes and drivers who are stupid and inconsiderate. 3 words to describe you: Helpful, stubborn and self-motivating. SURVIVOR contestant you are most like: Stephenie, because she’s strong and outspoken. Reason for being on SURVIVOR: This is another goal for me to meet and prove to myself that I can do it. Also, my brother-in-law would love to say that his sister-in-law is on “Survivor.” Why you think you’ll “survive” SURVIVOR: I’m good with directions, instructions and putting things together, with only using materials at hand. I’m an expert at building fires and a born leader. Why you think you will be the sole SURVIVOR: First and foremost, I won’t quit. As with anything I do, I’ll give it my all and I really need the money. Reminds me of: Tracy (Fans vs Favorites) + Show Spoiler [Edna] +Name (Age): Edna Ma (35) Tribe designation: Upolu Current residence: Los Angeles Occupation: Anesthesiologist Personal claim to fame: I was the first in my family to finish college. I subsequently went onto complete medical school and am board certified in anesthesiology. Inspiration in life: Oprah. She overcame poverty, abuse and numerous other challenges/adversities to become one of the most influential women in the world. Hobbies: Traveling, learning new things and going to new restaurants. Pet peeves: Idleness, liars and deception. 3 words to describe you: Self-starter, adventurous and ambitious. SURVIVOR contestant you are most like: Mick Trimming for his diplomacy. Reason for being on SURVIVOR: It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I want the experience! Why you think you’ll “survive” SURVIVOR: I’m a critical thinker and I’m good at tasks and building a team. Why you think you will be the sole SURVIVOR: I’m determined and I believe I can achieve anything I set my sights on. Reminds me of: Sylvia (Fiji) + Show Spoiler [Mikayla] +Name (Age): Mikayla Wingle (22) Tribe designation: Upolu Current residence: Tampa, Fla. Occupation: Lingerie Football Player Personal claim to fame: I was on the cover of Playboy February 2011 and met the hard working Hugh Hefner. Inspiration in life: My mother is my inspiration. She is a strong, independent woman who always taught me to reach for my goals in life. She raised my brother and me as a single mother and we never felt we were without anything we wanted. I can only hope to be half the mother she is. Hobbies: I like going to Broadway plays, riding quads, camping and going to the beach. Growing up in Northern New Jersey gave me the love of being outdoors. Pet peeves: Dishonest people, liars and people who think they are better than everyone else. 3 words to describe you: Outspoken, humorous and witty. SURVIVOR contestant you are most like: Jane. She stands up for herself and never lets her morals go. She is a hard worker and loves her dogs just like I love my pup, Diesel. Reason for being on SURVIVOR: It is my mom’s favorite show and we have been watching since I was 10 years old. She told me that if I ever got the opportunity to be on it we would jump at the chance! Why you think you’ll “survive” SURVIVOR: I feel that I am a strong independent woman and I know I will strive to prevail. Quitters never win and winners never quit. Why you think you will be the sole SURVIVOR: Playing sports all my life, I feel I am a competitor at heart. I am very athletic and am very likeable. I plan to use these qualities to get me to the end! Reminds me of: Andrea (Redemption Island) + Show Spoiler [Rick] +Name (Age): Rick Nelson (51) Tribe designation: Upolu Current residence: Aurora, Utah Occupation: Rancher Personal claim to fame: My family and my ranch. Inspiration in life: My grandfather. He built a very large ranch with his own determination and sheer willpower. Hobbies: Team sorting, hunting, riding and playing on my horse. Pet peeves: Quitters and lazy people who don’t keep their word. 3 words to describe you: Outgoing, strong-willed and self-motivated. SURVIVOR contestant you are most like: J.T. He played a great game and won. He is country, strong-willed, a great competitor, good to get along with, not a quitter and true to his word in the end. I’d like to think if you put 15 years on him, he would mirror me - except I’m better. Reason for being on SURVIVOR: It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to prove that you can survive with next to nothing for 39 days and be one of 23 people in the world to be named “Sole Survivor.” (And a million dollars would be nice). Why you think you’ll “survive” SURVIVOR: I’m used to living out in the elements on a daily basis. I’m a hard worker. I can build a fire, shelter and I can hunt and fish. I’m easy to get along with, always have a positive attitude and a lifetime of little tricks to make life nicer while camping in the dirt. Why you think you will be the sole SURVIVOR: After applying 14 times, I am driven and very determined to win the game. I will stop at nothing! Reminds me of: nobody really... Bob maybe? + Show Spoiler [Sophie] +Name (Age): Sophie Clarke (22) Tribe designation: Upolu Current residence: Willsboro, N.Y. Occupation: Medical Student Personal claim to fame: I won Prom Princess at my small rural high school where my graduation class was 28 students. Inspiration in life: I am skeptical of lionization of any one person. I do admire, however, Albert Schweitzer. He came from a well-off family and yet chose something much less grand with his life than he could have. True humanitarian. True passion. True dedication. Hobbies: Cooking, scrabble and reading. Pet peeves: Smart women who pretend to be dumb, particularly if they wear a lot of eye makeup, and people who walk slowly in cold weather. 3 words to describe you: Purposeful, resilient and shrewd. SURVIVOR contestant you are most like: I relate to Russell’s determination to win at any cost, Stephen’s intelligence, Stephenie’s competitiveness and Susan’s trueness to character. Reason for being on SURVIVOR: To win money! I have been bragging to friends for way too long about how easy “Survivor” is and how good I would be. I would like to have the freedom in Med. School to choose my specialty based on passion and not money and the potential to more quickly pay my debts. Why you think you’ll “survive” SURVIVOR: I am strong and athletic (play soccer, softball and basketball) and I am an extremely good skier. I am “Outdoor Emergency Care” certified and can thus deal with unexpected and extreme situations with a calm approach. I am a leader and always ready and eager to step up! Why you think you will be the sole SURVIVOR: I am tough, smart and driven. People will trust and like me even though they should not. I will piss people off, yet be convincing and heartfelt enough at the end to make them give me the money. I will mess with their minds and beat their bodies! I think it might actually be easy. Reminds me of: David (Redemption Island) + Show Spoiler [Stacey] +Name (Age): Stacey Powell (44) Tribe designation: Upolu Current residence: Grand Prairie, Texas Occupation: Mortician Personal claim to fame: Going to school and being a single parent. None of my children were ever in trouble with the law. Inspiration in life: Martin Luther King, Jr. He wanted equality for all people. Hobbies: Reading, outdoor grilling and dancing. Pet peeves: Gum-popping. 3 words to describe you: Determined, fun and versatile. SURVIVOR contestant you are most like: Vecepia Towery from Season 4. At Day 38, when Vecepia and Neleh were talking, she said to Neleh, “And Christ said while he was hanging on the cross, ‘It is finished,’ it is almost done.” Reason for being on SURVIVOR: To challenge myself and to bring the money home. Why you think you’ll “survive” SURVIVOR: I’m a team player with leadership qualities. I’m a time-manager and a go-getter. Why you think you will be the sole SURVIVOR: I’m not a quitter. When it comes down to me and my family, that gives me the drive to keep going on. Reminds me of: Alicia (Australian Outback) ===========Savaii Tribe=========== + Show Spoiler [Dawn] +Name (Age): Dawn Meehan (41) Tribe designation: Savaii Current residence: South Jordan, Utah Occupation: English Professor at Brigham Young University Personal claim to fame: Adopting our six children. Inspiration in life: My husband. He’s really one of the most incredible human beings. He’s kind, generous, peaceful, hard-working and selfless. I’m so grateful to spend my days with him. Hobbies: Swimming with my kids, writing/blogging and baking bread. Pet peeves: Brown grass and complainers. 3 words to describe you: Driven, positive and enthusiastic. SURVIVOR contestant you are most like: Sandra, Parvati and Stephenie. I’m physically strong like Parvati and Stephenie. I’m in this to really play and win -- like these women. Reason for being on SURVIVOR: “Survivor” is the best game on Earth! There’s so much application to “real life.” After watching as a fan for 10 years, I just know in my soul that it’s my turn to play and win. Plus, it’s the adventure of a lifetime and one million dollars! Why you think you’ll “survive” SURVIVOR: I’m driven, tenacious, adaptable, funny, optimistic, intelligent and resilient. I can motivate/persuade people, and I think that’s powerful/important at every stage of this game. Why you think you will be the sole SURVIVOR: I’ve got the drive and determination to dominate this game. And, as cliché as it sounds, I’m really “in it to win it.” Reminds me of: Leslie (China) + Show Spoiler [Elyse] +Name (Age): Elyse Umemoto (27) Tribe Designation: Savaii Current Residence: Las Vegas Occupation: Dance Team Manager Personal claim to fame: I was the second runner-up to Miss America and I raised my three younger sisters. Inspiration in life: My Grandma, Viola. God rest her beautiful soul. She taught me three of the most important things I’ll ever learn: how to read, how to pray and how to appreciate music. Hobbies: Baking cupcakes, amassing useless trivia and quotes and reading memoirs. Pet peeves: Professional athletes with bad attitudes, wet laundry that doesn’t get moved to the dryer immediately, pretty girls wearing ugly shoes and people who drink decaf. 3 words to describe you: Enchanting, indomitable and spunky! SURVIVOR contestant you are most like: Brenda from Nicaragua and Parvati. They know what they want and how to get it. They truly understand the social game. Reason for being on SURVIVOR: I thrive on challenge and the rush of competition. I always push the envelope and my limits. There’s no better avenue to do this than “Survivor.” Why you think you’ll “survive” SURVIVOR: I’m engaging, personable and a master at reading people. I’m controversial in many ways and I embrace that I’m a “character.” I’m naturally athletic and can seamlessly blend into a group. I radiate confidence and always compete to win. Why you think you will be the sole SURVIVOR: It’s not just my character traits that make me a winner. It’s literally in my blood to survive. My Japanese grandfather spent his childhood in an internment camp. My German grandmother’s family has strong, long-standing ties with the government and fled immediately before the war. My Native American grandfather was the son of a deaf mute who learned English as a second language on the reservation by age 9. I have a passion for competition and I am the product of generations of TRUE survivors- their strength and resilience are a natural part of who I am. Reminds me of: Brenda (Nicaragua) + Show Spoiler [Jim] +Name (Age): Jim Rice (35) Tribe Designation: Savaii Current Residence: Denver Occupation: Medical Marijuana Dispenser Personal Claim to Fame: I’ve worked on Wall Street, won over 40 poker tournaments, started several successful businesses and earned my MBA at a top five school from the University of Michigan. Pet Peeves: Close-mindedness and disingenuous people. 3 Words to Describe You: Ambitious, magnanimous and competitive. SURVIVOR Contestant You Are Most Like: Ethan. The dude dominated so much and was such a good guy that they practically gave him the one million. Reason for being on SURVIVOR: Life experience and excitement. Why you think you’ll “survive” SURVIVOR: I am the most unique person to ever apply! Why you think you will be the sole SURVIVOR: No one with my combination of character, intelligence, cunning and athleticism has ever been on Survivor. Reminds me of: Brendan (Tocantins) + Show Spoiler [John] +Name (Age): John Cochran (24) Tribe designation: Savaii Current residence: Washington, D.C. Occupation: Harvard Law Student Personal claim to fame: I won the Dean’s Scholar Prize at Harvard Law for an essay I wrote on the “Survivor” jury system. It was one of the few times in my life where my personal interests and academic obligations coincided perfectly. Inspiration in life: My family. Hobbies: Guitar, trivia and studying the music and history of The Beatles. Pet peeves: People who think or act like they are smarter than they actually are and people who don’t have a sense of humor. 3 words to describe you: Neurotic, insecure and brilliant. SURVIVOR contestant you are most like: I have some of the humor of Rob Cesternino, the candor of Jonathan Penner and the intelligence of Yul Kwon. Reason for being on SURVIVOR: My respect and admiration for “Survivor” and my desire to make it even better. My secondary motivation is to experience some adventure and excitement in my life during a time when I otherwise feel like I’m on autopilot. Why you think you’ll “survive” SURVIVOR: I have a strong sense of humor that can defuse tense situations and an ability to listen to conflicting viewpoints and devise a rational compromise that is satisfying to all parties involved. I also have a slender frame that doesn’t take up much space in a crowded shelter. Why you think you will be the sole SURVIVOR: I understand other people and how they function. Sure, I’m bright and have an extensive knowledge of “Survivor,” but none of that does any good unless you’re able to figure out the reasons why other people do the things they do. Not only can I do that, but I’m also confident that I can leverage their desires and motives in a way that best serves my game. Reminds me of: Rob C. (Amazon) + Show Spoiler [Keith] +Name (Age): Keith Tollefson (26) Tribe designation: Savaii Current residence: Edina, Minn. Occupation: Water Treatment Tech Personal claim to fame: I graduated college and moved to Hawaii for two years because that was my dream. Inspiration in Life: My mom. She raised me and my sister with little help and eventually bought a house for us after saving for years. She taught me how to be a gentleman even while I was causing trouble when I was young. She instilled great morals, values and love for all those around me. Hobbies: Surfing, swimming and long-boarding. Pet peeves: I really dislike people talking behind my back, especially when it’s not true, and rude people. 3 Words to describe you: Fun, adventurous and driven. SURVIVOR Contestant you are most like: Boston Rob because he’s memorable and played one of the best psychological games. Reason for being on SURVIVOR: I want to challenge myself, learn what limits I can reach and break them. Not only to survive, but win, so I’m number one. Why you think you’ll “survive” SURVIVOR: I have strength, intelligence and am EMT certified. I have the ability to manage high stress situations and still have a positive attitude. I am also willing to do whatever it takes to survive. Why you think you will be the sole SURVIVOR: I can make people understand, or think my decisions are looking out for them. I never quit. I wouldn’t go on the show if I didn’t feel I could win! Reminds me of: Shane (Panama) + Show Spoiler [Mark] +Name (Age): Mark Caruso (48) Tribe designation: Savaii Current residence: Forest Hills, N.Y. Inspiration in life: My deceased Aunt Mary, who brought us to her home, raised us and gave us a great life. Hobbies: Gym and all that goes with it, spending as much time in the sun as I can and meeting new people/making new friends. Pet peeves: Know-it-alls and people with “I am better than you” attitudes. 3 words to describe you: Funny, sarcastic and lovable. SURVIVOR contestant you are most like: I haven’t seen anyone like me. Reason for being on SURVIVOR: I want to experience being stripped of life's luxuries that we all take for granted and survive with the bare essentials. Why you think you’ll “survive” SURVIVOR: I am attentive and caring and have listening skills that can be supportive to my team and others. I love to work hard and have proven throughout my life that I will be a leader. Why you think you will be the sole SURVIVOR: People tend to like me because I am an honest person even though I am sarcastic and an “in your face” man. I am considered a real person heart, mind and soul. Reminds me of: Rupert (All Stars edition) + Show Spoiler [Semhar] +Name (Age): Semhar Tadesse (24) Tribe designation: Savaii Current residence: Los Angeles Occupation: Spoken Word Artist Personal claim to fame: My poetry on YouTube. Inspiration in life: Oprah because she is inspirational and loving. She makes a positive contribution to so many lives. She is a successful business woman and a world wide teacher. Hobbies: Writing/performing poetry, dancing and watching Oprah. Pet peeves: Liars. 3 words to describe you: Silly, flirty and sensitive. SURVIVOR contestant you are most like: Fabio, because he was silly and underestimated. Reason for being on SURVIVOR: For the money, change and challenges. Why you think you’ll “survive” SURVIVOR: I’m a people person. I can make friends with almost anyone. I would bring laughter, positivity and my knowledge and experiences from living in Eritrea. Why you think you will be the sole SURVIVOR: I think I'll win Survivor because I'm the girl that no one would expect to. I’m slick and sweet. Reminds me of: Alina (Nicaragua) + Show Spoiler [Whitney] +Name (Age): Whitney Duncan (27) Tribe designation: Savaii Current residence: Nashville, Tenn. Occupation: Country Music Singer Personal claim to fame: My first record "Right Road Now" was released on Warner Brothers in 2010. It's definitely my biggest achievement to date. Inspiration in life: Jesus and Elvis because they both inspired me in such different ways. Elvis is the reason I started singing and performing. And, Jesus saved me. Hobbies: Reading, hiking and kayaking. Pet peeves: Slow drivers and people who talk down to me. 3 words to describe you: Outgoing, happy and honest. SURVIVOR contestant you are most like: Stephenie from Palau because she’s smart and a bad-ass. Reason for being on SURVIVOR: It’s the adventure of a lifetime, and I want to prove to everyone and myself that I can do whatever I set my mind to. Plus, I could use a million dollars. Why you think you’ll “survive” SURVIVOR: I’m smart, physically fit and not afraid of anything. Why you think you will be the sole SURVIVOR: I’m extremely competitive and love to win. People normally like me, and I feel like I can read them well. Reminds me of: Chase (Nicaragua) ============The Returnees=========== + Show Spoiler [Coach] +Benjamin "Coach" Wade (39) Current Residence: Susanville, Calif. Previous Seasons: “Survivor: Tocantins” and “Survivor: Heroes Vs. Villains” + Show Spoiler [Ozzy] +Oscar “Ozzy” Lusth (30) Current Residence: Venice, Calif. Oh dear god Coach is coming back.
This... this is going to be very entertaining...
|
Oh my god Ozzy the man who won what 69 challenges in a row? This made my day.
|
Ozzy looks like a hippie hahaha
Can't wait for this to start! You managed to get a couple of the 'survivor most like me' picks right. Funny how a lot of them 'think' they're like JT.

Thread made me think it was on tonight and that I missed it!
Can't wait, really liked the redemption island format from last season.
|
I'm on the fence about how coach will be back on the show, not sure if they'll lose viewers because of that or not. Im excited to see Ozzy back for sure, brings personality to the show.. apart from that it looks like the usual survivor cast. We'll see tomorrow how the first episode goes
|
"My children didn't get into trouble with the law.."
"jesus saved me"
They really pick some special players eh!
|
Meh I prefer Jeopardy for the show with lots of seasons. Survivor's alright though I might just follow bits and pieces

I'll only really watch because I've never missed a season, the show hasn't really improved much the last few seasons
|
Someone tell me that this isn't scripted.

I am amazed that this show still exists.

This will be pretty damn interesting. Love to see how long the show milks out Brandon though.

Well, with big brother ending tonight, maybe this can partially fill up the big empty hole that will be opening in my heart. o.o
Surprised they didn't find an excuse to bring Russel back for the 20th time though.

Looking forward to this. Going with my habit of recording it and then watching it immediately after so I can skip the commercials.

Indeed, they should've invited some other e-sport legends like Boxer XDD

My parents are watching it right now. They are pretty damn obsessed with the whole Survivor ordeal. Honestly, I'm not really a fan.

You know how Ozzy looks a lot like Will in Pirates?

That dawn chick looks like a nut

Holy hell, I didn't know Survivor still aired. So very many seasons... and I only watched the first.

As chauvinistic as it makes me sound, I scrolled through the pictures too and was severely disappointed with the appearances of the female cast. Seems odd for a reality TV show.

So evidently they pick the entire cast purely based on how photogenic they are with their top off now..
I haven't really watched reality TV since the early days, but it's nice to know it hasn't gotten a whole lot more real.

Another "big secret" that will be impossible to keep. He really thinks he can prevent people from seeing those huge tattos?
Also really looking forward to some more stories from Coach. Dude makes great TV.

glad cochran survived. you can really see his passion for the game.

Yeah too bad he's probably gonna be next. Regardless, I can't really see him losing to Semhar, regardless of the challenge. She was "exhausted" after about a minute of running and crawling, getting pulled over a wall, and throwing 2 coconuts.

Cochran is either going down in a gigantic paranoid neurotic blaze of glory, or he'll turn it around with his tribe and make it deep with his smarts.
Coach is the person I'm rooting for, though. He's always been enjoyable and this time actually used his coach ways to help his team. Ozzy, on the other hand, decided to go swimming and get memorized by big breasts.
|
You kidding me? How is this kid at Harvard law school? He can't construct an argument for shit and gets easily flustered. He's going to make a terrible lawyer lol

I think he's still mystified about living his dream.
|
Let's hope thats all it is.
I love seeing nerds outsmart people on Survivor. And he seems like the only hope.
|
I dont understand the ozzy fans. He is one of the very few people who have on purpose lost a challenge to get rid of another player, thats the lowest you can get playing this game imo, not to mention that his social game is pracitacaly non-existant.
Now I`m gonna watch the first episode.
|
Can you refresh our memories on when ozzy threw a challenge? I'm still on the fence about him

Has throwing challenges ever actually been beneficial in Survivor?
I got so annoyed when they did it to get rid of Russell last season and totally lost any momentum they had and got wrecked up till the merge, when they just seemed to give up.
|
throwing team challenges is a really bad idea, you want numbers @ merge
throwing an individual challenge can be beneficial. for instance, hatch throwing the final challenge in the opening season.
|
i like jim and mikayla to do well this season.

Ozzy has this naive charm. He's been so dominant physically. And totally incompetent socially.
Look at this past week. Everyone's ganging up on Semhar, and he immediately wants to ally with her as a "competitive advantage" for the tribe. At least Ozzy still voted for Semhar, so he's not totally clueless anymore.

good season so far, looks like there could be an interesting dynamic with brandon's struggle. i really want to know if there are other reasons he hates mckayla already tho :/

I'm also SOOOOO glad they voted out Christine, I felt like smashing my TV any time she was on screen or talked. :p

Lets hope Cochran does make a plan to get rid of Ozzy, because with Ozzy's ability to win individual immunity and having a hidden idol he will be unstoppable if he makes it to the merge. Ozzy seems arrogant this season so I want to see him gone.

I recommend the Yul vs Ozzy series ( can't remember which one that was ) and the first Russel Hantz season.

I clicked on this thread thinking to myself "I haven't watched survivor in a long time, I wonder how famous Coach became."
THE DRAGON SLAYER RETURNS
Probably wont' watch it though

I don't understand why they keep bringing Coach back for more seasons... His kookiness was funny for a season but it's grown old and annoying even though he's toned it down a bit.
That said, there seems lots of weird people this season... Semhar, Coach, Brandon, etc.
|
I've always been a Coach anti-fan, but this season he hasn't irritated me yet. He seems a lot more relaxed and less eager to impress everyone.

+ Show Spoiler +Yul vs Ozzy is definately recommended. Thats 13th season (cook islands).
Regarding the this season, ozzy once again showed his super weak social game, by telling that he has the idol and I bet Russel is kicking himself watching his nephew play so pathetic.

DUDE I'm definitely one of the biggest Boxer fans on TL, that was what the show would've said, not my words.

I thought this season was kindof bland but this last episode was awesome.
+ Show Spoiler +Totally didn't expect them to actually get rid of Elyse. It's not often people leave a comfy alliance, and with easy votes still in Cochran and Dawn, the remaining 5 could have had a good footing going into the merge. Now their tribe is a mess and nobody's really in a good position. But I'm happy Cochran survived nonetheless!
|
Brandon is NUTS 'I don't care what people think of me' - whilst crying about what the chick said about him and his family
Good on him for wanting to give his family a better name though, although he is screwing it up in a way.
I've been on a survivor watching spree lately and Russel really should have won his first season but it's probably too late for him cause everyone will instagib him now in the future probably.

Does anyone else really like coach compared to previous seasons? He seems completely with it, intelligent and strategic. I know the edits can portrait people differently, but less stupid antics, ridiculous banter, etc etc. He's slowly becoming my new favorite.
edit: russell's nephew is nearly unwatchable. Russell at least had lots of character and made it FUN to watch him be an asshole. Sick of the religious crap this kid spews and crying 24/7, he brings the drama but its awful and hard to watch.

Yeah, Russell was a boss. He's probably the only reason I still watch this show... but his nephew is a fucking waste of air time. So annoying every time he's on air. The worst of all is his ridiculous bullying of Mikayla, then crying when she doesn't respect him. WTF?
edit: Also, FUCK Ozzy. What an annoying POS.
|
Yeah I really like Coach this seaon. They've stopped airing the "I paddled down the amazon river and escaped a tribe of cannibals" storytelling time, and instead its all the strategy. He is playing excellently so far, but I know at some point he'll do something stupid just like he did in Heroes vs Villians.
And Brandon definitely sucks so far... I like Mikayla, I think if she has the opportunity she could be a good player in this game. But Brandon's absurd vendetta against her put her off on the wrong foot and now she's completely out of the majority alliance with no hope in sight until the merge... unless Brandon goes crazy and alienates his alliance (ie Coach/Benjamin). Which is entirely possible.

Brandon annoys the shit out of me. Cochran is awesome. Elyse never did anything so who cares? With her gone Ozzy has to whore himself out to stay in the game. I'm also hoping Christine wins the entire game because that would be hilarious.

Yeah this show is not bad but Russell makes it great. Both seasons he got top 3 were the most amazing seasons to me.
The third one where his dumbass team lost to get him out was terrible. They bit the dust for booting him out which I found hilarious.

Been a while since anyone has posted in here,
I have to say this season is shaping up to be the best the series has ever had in so many ways. I still don't agree with the decision at the end though.

That was the craziest move I've ever seen... I can't wait to see what happens next week!
|
You should really add a [TV] or (TV Series) marker to the title if this is in general.
|
Interesting episode, I'm glad Ozzy's plan worked out and Christine was finally booted off for good. Cochran's duplicity should send him off as well, unless the old Upolu tribe simply picks off people one by one. Too bad that Ozzy wasted his immunity idol but I guess another one will get planted at some point possibly. Hope Keith pulls off a Christine-style run, without the whole losing on the last day part.

i think cochran is pretty much drifting in the wind at this point, the only time i remember a successful flip around this time of the game is when susie ended up getting to the end after flipping but she played a much different style of game

I don't really know what + Show Spoiler + was thinking flipping like that. I really don't see the positive and only the negative. Besides a big FU to the people who treated him like shit...it doesn't really make sense from a strategic pov. Plus, he's still on the outs with his new alliance because he's the new kid on the block...
Really like him but don't understand his decision and i think it'll cost him his chances @ a million

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
This season is so great though, I LOVE Cochran!
|
Wicked episode, one of the best ones in a long time. I thought it was pretty damn impressive how Coach totally caught Cochran lying. Definitely rooting for Coach this season.
|
My SO got me into this show.
I don't like Cochran. I'm tired of hearing his whining about being mistreated. He's got it in his head that he's being mistreated simply because he's "different" or a "nerd." Thing is, though, people are hard on him because he sucks. He sucks at everything. Nobody cares if he's nerdy, they just want him to perform better. Even nerds can have an iota of physical talent at something. Cochran, however, has none.
The pity parties this guy throws for himself are amusing, though. "Ahhh, everyone hates me. Ahhh, nobody likes me. Oh noes! I'm an outsider!" For a self-proclaimed "smart guy," he sure does spend a lot of time blaming everyone else for his predicament.
|
I read this as "Survivor: South Park" and at a quick glance at the picture it looked like a bunch of people dressed up as South Park characters. Damn it, was so excited!

I agree that the probability is that this decision hurts him more than it helps, but maybe the chaos is causes could be more beneficial to him than sticking with his tribe (at a risk to himself in this weeks vote) who would have never allowed a situation where he could win the game anyway.
I think both options are ultimately bad for him, but creating instability could allow him to benefit.
|
I don't think chaos is caused by this. I think Cochran and the other 6 will keep voting the others off and by the time they need to start thinking about their own alliance (around 7-9 people left) everyone will be scrambling to get physically strong players, as well as the players that played good since the beginning (Coach) off, not Cochran.

I agree, it will be pretty straightforward till the end i think, unless Ozzy makes another insane immunity run like he did before. Overall this season hasnt been too interesting for me... After 20 seasons maybe it is starting to become stale for me T_T

LMAO @ ozzy's terrible terrible acting
really stupid of cochran to flip imo, flipping pretty much never works out in the end
if he had stayed he could've easily gone to the end considering Jim and others are already thinking of getting rid ozzy when the time comes which means cochran could've enjoyed a nice and easy ride to the end while the stronger peoples pick each other off and think that cochran would have no chance getting the votes

I still think that he will be #6 in the line of that team. They seem very solid... especially since they have the whole prayer and bonding thing down. The game will start 4 weeks from now in the final 5 which should be just Coach's tribe, unless like i said Ozzy goes balls to the wall challenge happy. The next redemption finalist to come back could also play a role, although i doubt it.
|
Nazgul's explanation seems to make Cochran's flip make a lot more sense. Why didn't Cochran just vote Keith in the first round though, what was the point of voting twice? o.o Edit: Oh, because he didn't know Upolu's vote beforehand huh, so he voted with his tribe at first to find out who they were voting for.
Btw I'm glad Keith is out, he was a douche. I like Dawn and I hope she finds a way to survive, and Brandon's defense of Cochran was really cute (although Brandon still freaks me out a lot sometimes haha). I feel bad for Christine for having made it so far only to fail hard on the last challenge - she deserves at least a good rest at Ponderosa ^^ and get to watch everyone as they come to jury just for kicks :D
Also how do "the rocks" work, is it if there is a dead tie twice then EVERYONE picks rocks except those with immunity? (I've only been watching since season 20 so I'm not 100% sure on the black rock thing, it's if you pick black then you are out right)
|
they could have played it better, much better, if cochran mislead them in who not to vote plus the idol they would had a 2 of 8 chance of losing someone, now he is going to be kicked in 2 votes when they have the numbers to afford losing someone.
Pd: i really hope the poker player changes thing up

But by flipping, considering how tight the other tribes group is, will only get him to 7th. While by taking a "35%" chance, he has a very good chance of making it to the final 3. Of course something could always happen, this is just speculating from the current situation. But of course he himself doesn't know that since we the viewers know about other players intentions.
And it would be a 1/9 chance of being out completely, while 2/9 chance of him being picked off last or close to last of the Savaii tribe, which is basically the predicament hes in now.. not much improvement imo. While having a *66%* chance of being in a very comfortable spot.
But I can't really blame him considering how taxing it is to be actually there for so long and being on the chopping block every tribal, and now he finally has the power to decide the fate of the entire game he feels like he needs to do it to pay back for all the misdeeds his tribe has done to him.
|
Based on what we were shown that episode, I think Cochran made the right play, he told Upolo EXACTLY what his tribe was going to do. Vote for rick + Immunity to Whitney. Also the fact that his old tribe attacked him instantly, I think he's going to sneak into a Brandon/Coach alliance with Brandon slowly being push away for someone else.
|
I was really hoping they would have picked rocks. That hasn't happened in forever, I just wanted to see it occur.
I don't think Cochran flipping really hurt his position. It's still bad either way. Going to rocks maybe the reds come out ahead and gain an advantage over the blues, but then he's still 6th man in their alliance. Other way around and its the blues picking them off one by and one - same difference really. By flipping he guaranteed his safety that night and put himself with the majority side. Sure he's last man in the alliance, but its no risk and best case with the rocks he was still last man on the totem pole anyways.
I still don't know what to make of Cochran.. his confessionals are hilarious but then the rest of the time its him whining and crying.
But then even though Brandon seemed pretty nice to him at the end of tribal, I totally don't expect that to last. Brandon who went off about loyalty and honor and kept Edna even though he didn't want to, and then he welcomes in Cochran the backstabber? lol..... At some point he'll have another morality meltdown over it.

With recent bitter juries (and this cast doesn't seem much different), you're basically eliminating half the vote by flipping on your tribe when teams are even. Who from Savaii would vote for Cochran at the final tribal at this point? Maybe Dawn? Meanwhile if he stays loyal to his tribe he could play to Upolu members at the final tribal and remind his own tribe members that he stayed loyal at the time of crisis. If you flip at/near the beginning of the jury you better have something planned out for the votes.

so true, theres no way he is winning

Cochran is bottom of the totem poll wherever he goes so as far his longevity in the game I don't think it can hurt. He's with people who are far easier to manipulate now than he was before, so I think once it gets to the point where Ozzy's tribe is gone he has a better chance of maneuvering his way into the top simply because people will want to bring him. As far as jury votes he has a pretty good story about being the least likely to succeed in the game and constantly underestimated. At that point it depends way more on who you are up against though since everyone is always so bitter at jury votes, I think he can beat Brandon because he's insane, or the Asian girl or Cowboy because they have basically been sideliners the whole game.

Ozzy said he really wanted someone from his tribe to win if he didn't. I wonder if that still applies
|
I would have done Cochran's flip vote just for karma reasons.
I mean, from what we were shown, it just pissed me to no end when Jim/Keith/Dawne were all talking at night those times about how it's time for Cochran to "redeem" himself and that before Ozzy had his grand awakening, how they were going to do this master plan of having him beat Christine at redemption. It made no sense, and it was just obvious they were trying to make themselves feel better about kicking him out. Keith was his douchebag attitude than says the next night about Cochran not having someone else fight his own battles was just idiotic and pretty patronizing (since Keith just didn't want Ozzy at risk either way).
That rant being said, Cochran's chances were near null of winning either way. He's really no chance at winning individual immunity and he would be 6th/7th out from whichever side he ended up going with. I think if he ended up NOT flipping + nobody on his tribe lost out on the rock, than he would have a small chance to work with Dawne and maybe Jim to make an alliance and possibly bring him final three. Right now, even if he somehow makes his way into Coach's alliance, he won't have jury votes to support a win.
Edit: Dawne is also the most annoying person for me this season. A complete emotional wreck (second to Brandon), who was a complete a hypocrite in a span of basically 15 minutes.
|
This is shaping up to be my favorite season since Heroes and Villains.
I only worry that the second half of the season will be predictable, with Coach winning with Edna and Brandon as his final 2, or Edna and Cochran. The promo for next week makes it look as if Marijuana Man is able to stir Albert and Sophie into making some chaos, but if Upolo doesn't budge, we're going to have several boring weeks.
|
Watched a couple of the additional videos on the cbs website, it was clear Cochran was gonan switch but they edited all that stuff out to make it suspenseful Coach/Albert/Sophie promised Cochran final four also, but it's probably unlikely they'll follow through with that.
Also Christine catching fish was a fun video to watch ^^
|
In another thread I made...
In a Purple Rock scenario: 5/7 Upolu Draws (Coach/Albert/Sophie/Edna/Brandon) 2/7 Savaii Draws (Jim/Cochran)
5/7 Upolu draws purple: Savaii takes control; Cochran has options to flip later down the line 1/7 Jim draws purple: Upolu takes control; Cochran has options to flip here if necessary 1/7 Cochran draws purple: Goes to RI, has a small (albeit very small) chance of coming back
All these scenarios gives Cochran options down the road which are much less costly on jury votes.
Cochran flips: Pretty much guaranteeing losing the game by virtue of losing 4 jury votes (which are unlikely to be gained back). Has no options left other than being 7th in an alliance of 6. Savaii allies are all unlikely to realign with him, sans perhaps Dawn.
There are times where you need to risk the purple rock to further your chances. This was one of those times

anyone wish IdrA would get on the show?
|
Wow Cochran is so stupid, he basically doesn't have much of a chance to win anymore and I'm glad, because after this episode I began to hate him.

wait ndralcasid, do Rick / Keith not draw for rocks?

It seemed -likely- that Cochran was going to switch, but can you really be that sure? I was shocked that Coach didn't play his idol... you HAVE to play the idol there to give your team a shot at a 6-0 vote victory, it's just too valuable to miss that chance. Yes he thought Cochran would switch over, but he didn't know for sure.
Also I'm confused about Cochran's first vote. He gives the other tribe accurate info (that Ozzy would stand up and give the idol to Whitney), but then votes along with Ozzy's tribe. But then he switches allegiance again, and votes with Coach's tribe the second time. What was the point of him voting with Ozzy's tribe in the first vote? Was he just trying to make for good TV or something?
Also - in the past when there was a tie, both "nominees" got the chance to give a short speech and tell people why they shouldn't be voted out. This didn't happen this time. Do you think it did take place, but just was edited out of the show for time reasons?
Cochran has now all but ensured he will go far in the game, will be a memorable character, and possibly have a shot to return in a future season. Like others have said, it's extremely unlikely he can win the game now since he has zero respect from what will be much of the jury... but then again, they gave him no respect from day 1 anyway.
And he still has a small chance, he can point out "look at how I outplayed you, look at how I manipulated people, I earned my way to the end"... only works if he's against weak competition at the end though, and even then it's a long shot.
With a strong and loyal tribe, AND immunity in his pocket, Coach is extremely likely to end up winning this season. I wonder if CBS will change the idea of bringing back past players, because with the exception of Russell they're elevated to hero status and given a too-easy ride to the late game.
|
Personally a huge fan of Coach. Really honest, doesn't fear speaking his mind, and actually a really smart dude. I looked into his background - he's actually a music instructor at a University. When he called Cochran right out at the beginning of the episode, I was cheering for him. Really cool dude.

He has more chance now than he did before, he had to make a play and he had to make it at this tribal. The way Oz and the rest of the tribe treated him you really can't blame him, they basically berated him the entire time so he had no reason to show them any loyalty and frankly he didn't screw them over as he already knew he was on the outs with the rest of the tribe.
|
I hope Coach wins this thing. If he is smart he will take Cochran to the end simply because no one is going to vote for Cochran. Cochran is the odd man out on both sides and has no one that likes him other than Dawn.
Ultimately, about Cochran...he made the right decison. Really he wasn't going to win no matter what his decision, thus the best thing for him to do was to give a middle finger to his team that would have voted him out already if it weren't for Ozzy's sacrifice. I think he will make it to the final 3 and then receive 0-1 votes.
|
I hope Ozzy can get farther and Savaii doesnt just roll over
COCHROACH SCREWED HIS TEAM OVER
HE MOVED TO 7TH PLACE IN THIS GAME.
DAWN WOULD HAVE TAKEN HIM TO THE FINAL
JIM WOULD HAVE TAKEN HIM TO THE FINAL
UGHHH

The other tribe weren't gonna tell him their vote because they knew about the idol, so cochran HAD to vote with his tribe just to see who they were voting. They didn't tell cochran in the first place because if he DIDN'T flip he coulda screwed them with an idol.

No, cause then they would know that he flipped on them. If he changed his vote the second time around there's no way the idol is going to screw him over if the other team votes into it, then he could just act as if he wasn't going to flip.

I disagree completely. Once an alliance that deep in the game is up for voting on one of their own everything changes. If they have to vote on one of their alliance basically everything falls apart and strategies will be rethought. Cochran can stay in the game because he is physically weak and disliked by a lot of people, so people will want to keep him around for sure. Once you make it to the end you always have a shot at winning. A great example was Todd who had an amazing speech, something which Cochran is capable of as well. There are plenty of people on this tribe that dislike Cochran right now but might come to their senses regarding good play eventually.

His performance in the first immunity challenge would show that he is not a threat. It makes it unlikely that they will choose him over physically capable players. With that said, I dont think anyone wants Cochrane in the final three. If he makes it there, as naz said, it's quite possible he will be chosen as the winner with his impeccable way of speaking and his resilience of not getting voted out despite always being a strong candidate. We will have to wait and see. Being a nerd, I hope he wins haha. Same with fabio.

I dont agree with the Cochrans move at all. If he gets to final 3 who will vote for him? There will be at least 2-3 Savaii members, who will never vote for him and the rest from Upolu, from whom except something crazy happens I dont see who will vote for him, given the fact that we havent seen tribes with such close relations between the members for a while in survivor. This was cute way to guarantee his stay for few more episodes, but in the long run it was very bad descision imo. But this is survivor after all and anything can happen
|
My initial reaction was that the move was terrible, though others have tried to convince me otherwise.
The fact is, Cochran guaranteed himself an extra 3 days and more if he decides to go on a future all-star show (which he cemented a place with this move).
But let's be honest, his driving motivation is most likely having the satisfaction of voting someone off who has talked down to him since the first challenge.
It's dumb that it even had to come to that because there's no benefit in making someone feel like an outsider in this game. No one on Savaii even offered a plan to take Cochran to the final 3. I'd thought Jim would at least try. Cochran probably saw himself firmly on the outside, the 6th of his tribe, with little influence or play as things were. At least the other tribe had given an offer. Fake or not, the chance of something is better than nothing at all. He probably thinks that he has more room to maneuver; potentially as a swing vote.
Thing is, I don't believe Cochran has much of a chance to win the game either way. He's neither physically dominant nor socially adept. He would have to go up against Dawn and Whitney or Edna to stand a chance, and I'd put money on Dawn. Anyway, leaving aside whether it was a good play, a bad play, or a push, I'm just glad that people are making moves this season.

According to me,Survivor is my favourite tv show... after 22 seasons...Haha I remember Ozzy he was my favourite. I think I stopped the show after his first season though.I'll only really watch because I've never missed a season, the show hasn't really improved much the last few seasons.

Here's a really excellent blog on the Survivor website that argues the reasons why Cochran's switch was a GOOD move.

Immunity Blog: Episode 8
Posted on Nov 4, 2011 04:56pm
BY ROB CESTERNINO (Survivor Amazon & All-Stars)
Last week in this blog I wrote about the 5 Reasons why Ozzy’s decision to go to Redemption Island was the wrong decision to make. After 1,000 words and one Redemption Island challenge it turns out that I was the one who was wrong. Since now I’m the one in need of Redemption, I’ve decided to dedicate this week’s blog to the 5 Reasons why Cochran made the right decision this week.
5. Nothing to Lose – As you know by now, on this week’s Survivor, John Cochran decided to vote against his tribe to prevent a 6-6 stalemate and avoid picking rocks for elimination. Cochran’s decision has been highly scrutinized and is considered to be a bad game decision by a majority of the viewers I’ve heard from on twitter. The most common criticism was that Cochran took himself from being sixth in his own tribe to now being seventh in Upolu, thus making it a bad move. However, the fact that Cochran was sixth in his own tribe is exactly the reason why I like what he did.
If Ozzy was the one who defected to vote against Savaii, I would agree with the backlash. However, Cochran was not in a good position at all. Yes, Cochran could have easily stuck with Ozzy, Keith, Jim and company until the final six and attempted to make a play from there. Cochran may have somehow even been able to find himself in the final 3, but without a real chance to win. Last season, viewers screamed for Phillip, Andrea, Grant, Ashley or Natalie to make a move that could possibly prevent Boston Rob from winning the game. Ultimately, those players all chose to be content to sit next to Boston Rob as he collected 8 of the 9 jury votes and one million dollars. Cochran didn’t have a real shot to win before this move and therefore had nothing to lose. I’m still not convinced if Cochran has a shot now, but the difference is that for the first time in this game his destiny belongs to him, not Ozzy.
The real mistake in all this belongs to Ozzy. The reason Cochran had nothing to lose was because Ozzy never offered Cochran any incentives to remain loyal to Savaii. Does anybody really think that Boston Rob wouldn’t have had a side deal for the Final 3 with Cochran and Dawn from Day 5? Ozzy just did not do enough to protect against this possible defection, which is unfortunate since he’s the one who had everything to lose.
4. Between a Rock and a Hard Place – Lost in the fervor of people saying Cochran betrayed his tribe is the fact that Cochran prevented a draw of the dreaded purple rocks. Due to the two immunity necklaces, the two survivors receiving the votes and the play of the hidden immunity idol, eight contestants would have had to draw rocks to determine who would go home. Of these eight players, there would have been five Upolu tribe members (everyone except Rick) and the three unprotected Savaii tribe members, Jim, Keith and of course, Cochran.
By making this decision to betray his tribe, Cochran avoids the 12.5% percent chance that his game ends on the spot. It’s very easy to say from your couch that Cochran should have played the percentages, but it’s an easy thing to do when its not your potential million dollars. Furthermore, Cochran ran a 37.5% chance that someone from his tribe pulls the dreaded rock (including himself). In this scenario, Coach’s tribe likely picks off the remaining members of Savaii one by one. Instead of leaving things to chance, Cochran makes the only move that 100% guarantees him three more days on the island by breaking it off with Savaii like it was a Kardashian wedding.
3. Time Heals All Wounds – Another argument I’ve heard against Cochran’s decision is that Cochran has assured himself he can’t win because now Ozzy, Keith, Jim and Whitney all hate him. As a viewer, sometimes we forget how long the Survivor game actually is. Sure, we all know the game takes 39 days, but for the Survivor it seems far longer than that. Remember a few episodes ago when we all thought Ozzy would never forgive Jim, Keith and Whitney for voting out Elyse? After a few hours of pouting, that whole incident is water under the bridge. This episode ended on night 21, meaning there are 18 days left in the game. Far too much can happen to assume we know how anybody will vote in the final tribal council yet.
Even if the Savaii tribe never speaks to Cochran again (and if I recall, not too many of those players were particularly fond of him in the first place), he made six new allies by choosing to defect to Coach’s tribe. Certainly, it is possible that Coach’s tribe may simply discard Cochran once he’s served his numerical purpose but Cochran now has more friends in the game than he did at any earlier point in the game. Finally, it’s not necessarily a bad thing to get labeled as “the guy who the jury hates”; sometimes it’s all you need to make it to the end.
2. Long Division – Cochran now finds himself aligned with Coach’s tribe as seemingly the seventh member of a completely solid six-person group. While Cochran himself may not know about all of the Upolu tribe’s issues, as viewers, we are well versed. Only two episodes ago, we watched as Coach and Albert butted heads about keeping Edna around in the tribe over Mikayla. Coach always preaches loyalty, but I know he would certainly vote out any of his own alliance members if he suspected them of conspiring against him. Of course, there is also always the possibility of another Brandon Hantz outburst. With so much time left in the game, there are countless opportunities for Cochran to work to divide the members of Upolu and get himself a better deal.
1. When Right is Still Wrong – Okay, I betrayed you. Like Cochran said to Jim, “I’ll explain it”. This list is actually four reasons why Cochran was right and one reason why Ozzy STILL made the wrong move last week – even though it “worked”. Last week, Ozzy decided to send himself to Redemption Island to make sure they got Christine out of the game to prevent her from re-joining Coach. Unbeknownst to Ozzy, Christine never liked Coach and would’ve probably switched to Ozzy’s side. To accomplish this, Ozzy sent himself to Redemption Island instead of Cochran. Had Ozzy sent Cochran to Redemption Island, Cochran would’ve likely not returned the game and had the opportunity to betray Ozzy.
Furthermore, Ozzy’s performance at the Redemption Island duel did nothing to help the cause of reality stars who would like to break into acting. Ozzy lost a lot of credibility with Upolo and potentially crippled his chances to win their votes in a final tribal council. Ozzy is no longer playing like Ozzy. Ozzy used to be known a dominant physical threat who was an honest stand-up guy. With his reputation tarnished and down in the numbers it’s looking more and more like Ozzy’s game is going to come down to just how long of an immunity challenge run Ozzy has in him.
I know many won’t agree with what I had to say about Cochran’s big move, let me hear from you on twitter, @RobCesternino – and please help support our friend Ethan Zohn in his ongoing battle against cancer by using the hashtag, #GetBetterEthan

I can't stand Cochran. He plays the role of the victim so well it's annoying - and I don't even think it's strategic. He's just this total nerd who thinks that the only reason people might not like him, or not always be nice to him, can only be because he's a "nerd."
If he was an 11 year veteran of Survivor as he claims, he'd know that the weakest players always go first - for the good of the tribe. He's weak. People weren't "hard on him" because he was a "nerd", they were hard on him* because he wasn't pulling his weight and he wasn't good at challenges - no different than how the other tribe treated Edna. God forbid he be accountable for his failings.
But no. Cochran carries around some self-pity from his past and it clouds his idea of how others perceive him, so he's a victim. He's happy as a lark now, though, strutting around and being all smug, while things are going well for him. Ironic.
*I'd argue that they weren't even particularly mean, there are a number of scenes where they tried to be inclusive.

Do they ever have one on one interviews with that cowboy oke? You never see him do anything :S

Meh I think Cochran could give a convincing speech at the end and try to show that he 'decided his own path' or some stuff like that. I think it's definitely a viable reason to switch rather than have your fate chosen by chance. Also I totally agree, they never show ANYTHING involving Rick haha

Speeches have won the game for people who did far worse, and who went up against far better finalists, and Cochran has already shown to have a good speech. Even without speeches there is always a chance people vote based on strategy, which would not be a first either. If that's the case he will have a shot. I think some of the people that are angry with him would still vote on him because they are just going to vote for the best player (i.e. Ozzy, Dawn). The way I see it he has only lost three votes: Keith, Jim, Whitney and even they might come to their senses before the end.
However most importantly if he goes up against finalists such as Sophie, Edna, Rick or Whitney there is a good chance he wouldn't even need any of that, because they have been useless and aren't well liked enough to be an outright victor when it comes to votes.
|
The whole lot of them + Cochran sitting out of the challenge was quite bad though. The merge came too early imo, if coaches tribe lost one more immunity it woulda created better rifts for them to work with. But now, they all sit out knowing they stick together and they are still even referred to as separate tribes in tribal council, sitting separately and everything. Someone needs to create a riff or SOMETHING else the game only restarts when only cochran is left of that old tribe.

But he's playing a dangerous game. It's pretty obvious what he's doing from an inside perspective. I guarantee you coach is pissed and will be on an anti-albert mission soon. Although the previews make it look like Brandon fucked something up and is the target because of it.
|
I wish they had made the move just to spice things up a bit, as of now it kind of feels like the season is very similar to last season where Rob and his tribe dominated everything. Maybe redemption does that? Or people are learning the game better, and it's a game about numbers now . . . Although I wished they had made a move, I think it would have been bad for Cochran. Switching back and forth and back and forth can't be good especially for nabbing jury votes in the end.

Just how long has it gone on? I remember somewhat following the first two seasons when those were broadcasted here... and that was years ago.
|
I'm not sure since I only started watching since season 20, but according to Wiki it's been going on since 2000 now (in the US). It's season 23 now!
Btw, Ponderosa is very fun to watch and I always watch it, I think it's worthwhile if anyone's interested. Their accommodations suck this year compared to last two seasons haha! It's in tents and the cafeteria has flies everywhere haha

LOL Recap episode was really interesting. Cochran makes me crack up so much haha, make sure you watch until the very end after credits for his "Keith Impression" xD

This week it'll get reeal interesting, i hope at least. I'm tired of savaii members getting knocked out one by one, i want some of the nastiness to come out!
Cochran, Albert and Sophie hwaiting! I can't stand coach with his high horse bullshit, and Brandon (as well as Coach...i mean Benjamin) forhis 'man of god' bullshit. God that pisses me off.
|
What's the Rantz legacy that the kid is so ashamed of? Or Hantz or whatever
|
Brandon Hantz' uncle was Russell Hantz, a (3 time?) player who was notorious as a villain who sabotaged camplife and ruthlessly backstabbed his allies. So Brandon made his goal of the game to "clear the Hantz name." Unfortunately he's not doing a terrific job at that haha.
AND about this episode. + Show Spoiler +FUCK!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Yeah I find it very annoying how every season they manage to plug in religious shit every episode T_T but I guess that is a pretty large part of their audience so it's understandable I guess.

You guys should check out the ponderosa clips on the cbs website.
+ Show Spoiler +Whitney had a boyfriend and is straight up cheating with keith lol.
I pretty much think coach has this season, albert may have a chance if coach lets him get to the end but I doubt that. Hes got hantz and edna under his belt. Then he can reel the cowboy over. That leaves albert with sophie.
All that's left as a variable is who comes back from redemption.

I'm kinda hoping they might think about bringing back the old style of Survivor back. Both Rob and Coach took complete control of their tribes, destroyed the other tribe, etc.
Coach probably has everyone's vote lol. He's played loyally and has been really smart, never really did anything bad to anyone.
|
I really hope they don't knock off Brandon..
Quote of the season: Talking to Brandon about strategy is like talking to Jeff about shirts that arn't blue.
And all though the stupid filler episode where they show clips from previous episodes is dumb, it did make me lose respect for most of the savii members. Except cochran and dawn + Show Spoiler + Too bad they are gone now Well...cochran is as good as gone

this season is really boring gameplay-wise

Yeah well, once Cochran flipped it was a given that Savaii were going to get picked off one by one. That's why they had that double elimination in one show, to speed things along. But now that they're down to that final 5 from the first day on the island, it should get more interesting. How we go from 5 to 3 isn't entirely clear, even if Brandon is fated to exit. Also, Ozzy could mix things up with Coach keeping up the 'final 3' promises to him. Then again, based on the teaser for next episode, Edna might actually knock him out since it seems to be a challenge that at least partly involves a puzzle.
Personally, I figure this season is Coach's to lose.
|
Hoping for Ozzy to come back and beat out coach, the only two real contenders for the $million imo
|
Wow that Redemption Island challenge was super close between Cochran and Ozzy.
I think if Coach takes Ozzy to the final 3, Coach still is the favored to win based on how he's played this game. More jurors from Savaii means Ozzy will have more votes too though.
|
hey ya'll, just wanted to let you know that there's extra videos on cbs.com that show the jury's life in what they call 'Ponderosa'. Interesting to see what they do after dropping out.
edit: somebody already mentioned it and i didn't see but i'll leave this up ^^

well, at least i can't complain it 's boring anymore

Brandon is THE dumbest person to ever play the game of survivor.
Obvioulsy, Ozzy WILL win the million dollars if he wins redemption and all remaining immunity challenges. The jury is made up of mostly his old tribe members, and he has never had to betray anyone, thus no people are mad at Ozzy. If Coach elects to maintain his promise and take Ozzy to the final 3, then Coach will NOT win a million dollars.
Honestly though, Coach should have the game in the bag. He goes into next episode with Sophie and Rupert in his back pocket. As long as Ozzy doesn't win immunity, then Coach should send Ozzy home first. If Ozzy wins immunity, then send Albert home. The final immunity challenge (if ozzy is there) would literally be a challenge worth a million dollars (to both coach and ozzy). If anyone but Ozzy wins immunity, then Coach wins the game of survivor, but if Ozzy wins the challenge, then he would have truly earned a million dollars.
|
This season is so ridiculous. -___- I hope Ozzy wins the whole thing.
|
brandon is retarded. hope sophie or ozzy wins.
|
Yeah holy crap I cannot believe how stupid Brandon is . . . As for Ozzy, as great as he has been doing in challenges, I feel like simply winning challenges should not deserve the million dollars nearly as much as someone who has played the social game on top of playing the challenges.
|
man this players are stupid, i hope ozzy wins
|
So much praying. Feel bad for the last chick ( Sophie?). She seems like the only normal person.

I agree, but we saw almost nothing in terms of social game apart from coach creating his family, that will take him till the end. This and coach turning Cochran against his formal tribe. There are only two players that can win, if at least one of them will be in final three no one other than them has a chance to win.
|
I think having the experienced players in each tribe is making it a little boring, things are more interesting when there's a leadership struggle and the alliances become more fluid.
|
i would never vote for coach just because of all the BULLSHIT religion that he and brandon partake in
|
On December 17 2011 05:59 darthfoley wrote: i would never vote for coach just because of all the BULLSHIT religion that he and brandon partake in I love how Sophie rolls her eyes whenever religion talk comes up. Especially when Albert was saying it at tribal probably just to appease Brandon.

im going to respectfully disagree and say that...

extremely disappointed in the winner, think ozzy deserved it most out of anyone there, or even brandon. winner this season really disappointed me, and there's definitely been some previously undeserved winner before (natalie from samoa, fabio from nicaragua etc)
|
+ Show Spoiler +I think Sophie deserved to win it. I think ozzy was the strongest player but coach and sophie both played excellent games. I absolutely hate it when scrubs win this game like natalie from russell's first season and I, in no way, think sophie falls under the scrub category. She was always the 2nd strongest player on upolu the whole game
|
+ Show Spoiler +I would not have voted for any of the 3 if I could have. None of them played an even remotely good game compared to past seasons' winners. I feel like the production crew spent so much time on brandon and the religious stuff that we didn't get to hear about some of the strategy that Sophie or Albert might have actually used.
Entertaining season nonetheless. Poor ozzy -_- not sure why sophie hated him so much
|
+ Show Spoiler +Gotta say I think Sophie is the most deserving winner of the final three, but I wouldn't have been too surprised if Coach won either. Albert is an idiot and screwed himself pointlessly.

Wow I know brandon was a little crazy but his family seem to think the game of survivor is more important than he is =/
edit: I do like the idea for next season, will force the players to think way ahead and forge alliances early. gonna be interesting
|
Have to agree, it was a fair result.
While it is more interesting for us as an audience, survivor is not a game about making moves. So, you know that there is a very good chance that a winner could emerge from a non-driving force throughout the game.
However, saying that, I think the edits showed that the winner wasn't just some mindless sheep.
|
Arggh Sophie winning is bullshit, even though everyone hates coach and the amount of over religious talks that he is clearly just saying for the hell of it, i think that he played the better end game than anyone on the tribe. Albert was a moron for blubbering around the question brandon asked him did you know i was going home last night, fuck me its a million dollar vote just saying fucking no brandons dilussional enough to believe that crap. I am so PISSED that Ozzy didnt win, i think the redemption island addition has been a blessing in disguise for this game it creates an amazing underdog scenario that would have DEFINITELY let ozzy win that game. Fuck im pissed about the end of this series when the first half was so freaking good.

Being the sole survivor simply means coat-tail riding and not making any moves that create enemies. After 20+ seasons I cannot see how people fail to realize that. Then again, most people "in" the game feel that the game is getting to the final 3 or "a little further" in the game rather than getting the million or winning the entire thing.
|
I feel I wasted my time watching that whole season. The only thing that kept me watching was cochran.

Next season russell vs brandon would be fucking epic! Do it big survivor, make it happen

I liked Brandon, even though he was psychotic and delusional. Something about his story and family makes me connect with him, and I feel bad for him.

Not to mention they can't show everything that actually happens. Apparently rick did alot more than what was shown, but at time throughout the season I forgot he was even there. But there are quite a few survivors who won on there own meritt not riding any coat tails. Like Todd on China, he ran that whole game. Or the love of my life parvati who had to outwit russell hantz to win.

gee thanks for spoiling it idiots, ffs. Put a fucking spoiler tag jesus. Or why didn't the admins remove the post?
|
+ Show Spoiler +I was rooting for Coach to take the cake, but I'm satisfied with Sophie winning the prize. Let's face it; She's no Natalie, at least. She fought for that win and played a smart game. Her win in the last challenge got either her or Coach the game, because nobody really liked Albert. The moment when she revealed the secret behind when they found the idol, she won herself the game, imo. I love me some Coach, though. Would have loooooved to see him win. I really enjoyed this season. Way better than last year's snorefest.
Edit: Better safe than sorry, I guess.
|
+ Show Spoiler +I dont know why so many people think that Sophie is more deserving that coach. She didnt beat Ozzy, he lost the challenge by himself. Dunno, it seemed to me that coach was the driving force and the strategist behind the winning tribe. The only mistake he made was choosing Sophie over Rick. Overall it was "ok" season, but Cochrans move made the game much more boring that it would have been. I felt bad for Brandon at the end, but he cant blame anyone else besides him for his stupid play.

Ozzy was the Terry Deitz of this season. Hard to see him fight week after week and then fall just one challenge short.
And the bitter juries really suck. The majority of them all saw Coach as this big liar and hypocrite (especially Rick) and so wouldn't vote for him. I mean Sophie voted out Rick just as much as Coach did, but Coach was the figurehead so he takes all the heat for it. Lying and manipulating is what happens on survivor.. what did they expect..
I really hope they don't bring back two former players next season. They just end up running the show and while its great strategy for them, its kindof boring to watch. Though I guess it avoids us having another season like Nicaragua.
|
I am a bit disappointed that Coach did not win, but Sophie was definitely the second most deserving player to win. Coach definitely was the entire reason Upolu was so strong. He was pretty much the sole reason Cochran was convinced to switch. He did do a bit poorly towards the end though. Promising Rick that he'd never vote for him and then trying to give Ozzy some sort of promise increased the bitter feelings from the jurors a lot. He should have just told Rick that he might consider voting him out since he saw him as strong, at least that way Rick wouldn't feel as betrayed and Coach could more easily defend his "honor, loyalty, and honesty" mantra.
Coach never should have approached Ozzy about taking him to the end, that was just stupid.

Who talked albert out of all his harebrained schemes to break up the 5? sophie who beat whitney to get the last savaii loyalist out? sophie who beat ozzie to ensure upolu final 3? sophie
i think she did a lot of the strategy work and had coach as the figurehead leader/diplomat, so he'd take the heat from angry jurors.
|
Sophie is the ONLY reason that Ozzy didn't win, pretty much. It was VERY obvious that if Ozzy made it to the final 3 he would quite literally sweep the jury (with maybe the exception of albert/sophie, if they were the ones voted out instead of Ozzy). Still quite disappointed that Ozzy fell short one more time, but Coach didn't play the same role that Rob did last season, even though he essentially did the same things as Rob did (completely control the outcome of the game since day 1 with no chance of getting voted out), still didn't deserve the win because he didn't do it clean enough like Rob.
Rather have had Sophie win than Coach though, even though I don't believe either one of them deserved it

Hmm yeah very good points. She definitely was an extremely strong player. Great in challenges and good strategically as well. I'd have to question whether she would have been able to convert Cochran as Coach did, which was pretty much instrumental in giving Upolu the game. I think Coach began to screw up a bit towards the end though and that really bit him hard in final tribal.
Your point about being the figurehead reminds me of Fabio who basically was liked by everybody because he didn't orchestrate anybody's exit from the game, beating out Sash who was in control of the game for a really long time.
