You do not have to stop being nice, but you also do not have to be nice. You have to just be yourself. If you are normally nice, be nice, but changing your behavior is just going to complicate things. If you are just trying to play her and get some action--which I am sure you are not--then go ahead and be an asshole, pretend to be something you are not, just long enough to get with her.
I think some of the advice you are receiving is from guys who think you are trying to play her, or who are simply confused about relationships. Just realize that you are a cool guy, she is going to see that you are a cool guy and as long as you aren't acting weird or abnormal (faking overconfidence, being an asshole, fawning over her, etc.) she probably will want to go out with you.
But you really can not just ask her if she likes you, either. She wants you to prove yourself to her. Simply asking her if she likes you is kind of giving up and taking the easy way out. You have to at least pursue her a little bit, because she will enjoy the anticipation of waiting for you to ask her out when she wants you to.
I am not trying to just be contrary, this is really the way I think you should go about it.

Chibi is right, be yourself if you spend too much time thinking of how to impress a girl then you aren't being your true self and if she ends up liking you she'll be liking the part of you that tries too hard. Be yourself, be confident, don't be scared make fun of her a little, throw in compliments. Don't always try to treat her like a queen, like buying gifts, don't do that. But be a gentleman, opening doors, buying meals, tickets, etc are fine.

Some people did suggest things that would make him not "be himself" and instead, somebody else. TruthBringer is right in that aspect that if he wants to be "more serious" in the relationship, it is a bad move.
