The issue here is that the most lasting shoes are leather shoes. Finding anything vegan friendly in this category will be hard.

Then there's the laces, and the interior which also undergoes a lot of friction every time you get in and out. Maybe for the summer, sandals might be the most wear and tear friendly thing? Changing shoe laces - I wouldn't count that Changing sole is doable, so I wouldn't count that either, more ecological than buying a new shoe and some manufacturers even provide this(e.g. Meindl IIRC). But as I mentioned above, I don't know any shoe which is long lasting and vegan friendly(I am not vegan myself and wear leather boots most of the time).

No plastic shoe will come even close to 5 years IMO.
My longest with one pair of Nike sneakers was 1,5 years wearing them almost everyday. My longest with one pair of Birkenstock sandals was easily double that. I did wear them everyday but only indoors meaning they were not that exposed to sunlight and water I think they have a vegan variant now but I've not tried that.

I am looking for shoes. Specifically, shoes that fulfill the following requirements:
-Last a very long time -Vegan
I have no clue how to go about this. My ideal setup would be two sets of shoes, one for the summer and one for the winter. I would wear them every day, and i would want them to last at least 10 years. I do not know if this is even possible. Most shoes seem to be designed to last a reasonable amount of time only when occasionally worn. Which is totally reasonable for the use case of people like my wife, who owns a lot of different shoes and alternates which she wears based on a completely incomprehensible algorithm.
So far, i have usually bought cheaper shoes, which lasted a year or so. I am willing to spend a bit more if i am really certain that that would be a lasting investment, but i would be majorly pissed of spending a lot of money only to have the shoes also fall apart after 1-2 years. And i simply don't know how to figure out which shoes will last. I tried this for winter shoes two years ago, explicitly stating my desires in a shoe shop two winters ago. Yet here i am once again, two years later, and the soles of the shoes that were sold to me as lasting has turned into some kind of weird mesh that hurts my feet.
I know that the desire to get vegan shoes doesn't help here, as high-quality shoes are usually leather. Does anyone have some advice? I've been using these for ~2-3 years now I think and they aren't breaking down yet: https://en.camelactive.com/sneaker-bayland-22238789-0000-67-40
But I'm not a sports person and certainly haven't worn them every day. When I wasn't working from home due to Corona though they were worn for ~10-12 hours a day 5 days a week.

Thanks a lot for the answers! I guess i must accept that what i want doesn't actually exist, and be prepared to buy new shoes every 2-3 years

are woodchucks just groundhogs and do they even chuck wood?

Woodchucks are just groundhogs and don't chuck wood sadly.

If they could chuck wood how much wood could wood chucks chuck?
|
A woodchuck should chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood, as long as a woodchuck would chuck wood.

A woodchuck would chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood

Are audiobook services worth the money? They seem too expensive but I feel like if I had one I'd go through way more books and learn a lot more efficiently. My local library has a shit selection for audiobooks.

Have you looked into podcasts? Podcasts often do what i expect audio books to do for other people for me, namely listening to interesting stuff while on the road/otherwise occupied. There are a lot of very competent podcasts for a variety of topics.

How has this thread managed to get to 777 pages?

Mostly by asking and answering stupid questions

Quick grammar check on non-binary pronouns, because I'm having a brain fart and I want to make sure I'm writing the dialogue correctly in my game: If someone identifies as "they", rather than "he" or "she", would the proper way to use "they" in a sentence be "They is" (like "He is" or "She is") because a single individual is still being referred to, or is it "They are" because that's grammatically consistent with how we've traditionally used "They" (i.e., referring to a group of people, even though in this case, we're not referring to a group of people)?

The switchover to gender neutral pronouns has caused all sorts of transitory issues, and I think the focus should be on respect and colloquial harmony (what sounds good) rather than technical or unbending accuracy. For that reason, I’d go with “they are” rather than “they is” every time; the former sounds more natural and helps to normalize the grammar of respect being used.

genuine question - how can someone identify as a plural pronoun? I mean, I'm totally fine with using whatever people want to be addressed as, but how did 'they' become an option for an individual?
