something, which i find amazing, is that religion is something not mentioned on kr streams. do kr streamers have a religion most of them are affiliated with or is this something that is unknown, or known but not spoken of?

edit: i know threads about religion are not ok. but this is just a pondering about kr culture and progamers, which, i understand, may be by affiliation not ok.

edit5: this is why i thought this thread might be best suited for the question

Why only kr? And why do you expect progamers to be talking about religion? When I watch streams I expect the talk to be about the game, or foolishness. I do not expect religion, politics or anything else serious. I don't think I know the religion of any pro gamer, Korean or otherwise. Nor do I care.

i don't care, either. i was hoping the phrasing of my post would show that. i don't watch streams for that purpose... i was just wondering if there was a consensus and that's why it is never brought up

A lot of countries treat religion as something private, that you don't talk about a lot. Germany also falls into that category. People rarely talk about religion here, outside of situations where it is absolutely necessary, or if they are bavarian politicians.

The big advantage this has is that it lets everyone live in the fiction where everyone else believes the same thing as they do.

unfortunately, in the us your religion has a lot to do with being elected. jfk was the first non-protestant president elected in the history of our country. i can't see a secular president being elected in my lifetime. trump is as secular as a president has ever been, i would think. he pretends to be catholic but i think this whole thing is an anomaly we are going to forget and just move on from..

Maybe it's because of different sports cultures between traditional sports and esports? I haven't heard Scarlett, Tasteless (or Day9), Artosis, IdrA, or anybody else mention religion. The only US Starcraft personality who I recall talking about religion at all was InControl, and never in relation to the game, but in relation to his family life.

European players? The same. I would be quite surprised if Serral started thanking God instead of his practice partners for the tournaments he won (insofar as Serral ever talks at all). Even Reynor, Mana, Nerchio and Elazer never mention religion and their countries are at least as religious as the US is (same for Lucifer and Vortix).

Your question is strange as you seem to be exposed to other cultures, if only through Starcraft, yet you appear to be under the assumption that American culture is the norm, instead of being solely an American culture. Koreans don't talk about religion, because that's the norm across the world, just like it's the norm to not talk politics.

USA is pretty much the only country that has it culturally acceptable to thank god for your victory. Along with the Middle East, though in their case, you may find their god is a slightly different god. It's considered pretty odd for politicians to make appeals to god or divine powers, unless you live in a country with a religious theocracy like Saudi Arabia or Iran. American politicians constantly talking about gods and divine powers is the anomaly. American culture is the wierd one here, not Korea or Europe.

I think it might also just be a US vs Euro thing in general.

I am not very much into sports, but i don't think european sports people constantly talk about religion or god. At least i can't recall noticing it from when i lived with my parents who used to watch sports from time to time.

Every now and then a football player will pull a necklace with a cross on it out and kiss it after a goal, or before taking a penalty. Definitely more a southern European (and South American players) thing than northern European.

i do not assume that US culture is the norm. i just asked because i study relative religion and it is interesting how some cultures do and do not put their religion on blast. i think it is weird when american athletes thank their god for their achievements but it has become quite commonplace. it's the equivalent to a progamer saying i trained very hard and owe a lot to my practice partners. i am sure it is mostly done for mass appeal in the states since a lot of americans are religious and was just probing about other pros

Your question was asked under the impression that American culture is the norm, instead of Korean culture is the norm. The question you should be asking is why does USA have such a cultural norm so drastically different from the rest of the world.

Even now you write that some cultures that do and some do not, however USA is unique among developed democracies that they do. Many European countries like Italy are deeply religious, yet that is considered culturally inappropriate. You claim that you study relative religion, whatever that may be, so I ask you, why is it culturally acceptable in USA to talk about god and religion for athlete and poltiicians?

that's a good question. i admit my stuides have nothing to do with contemporary culture and only harken back to the texts. I say american athletes do it, and that i think it is strange. i don't think that that is setting a norm. i am just asking what are the norms in other places and why.

Is everywhere else making a big deal out of highschool graduation or is it just where I live? I think it's kind of ridiculous... woopdie doo you completed compulsory 12 years of basic schooling. I guess it marks a big change in a young person's life.

The question of the value of a high school education is not universal, it can be of incredible value and worthy of celebration for some, yet a mere mile marker for many others.

I will say that many who are emphasizing the value of a graduation ceremony these days are doing so for reasons unrelated to the graduate’s wishes, for sure.

It's a modern day coming of age ceremony. Just because most people complete it doesn't mean it's not a major milestone in many peoples' lives.

Highschool, at least where I'm from, are the five years before the majority of students turn 18. (No middle school where I live)

In these years most people go from a child, 12-13, to someone old enough to be called a young adult. Graduation has nothing to do with what you learned or how well you did beyond passing. It's a ceremony that symbolizes the fact that you are now on your own, so to speak. Other than your parent/legal guardian, there's no authority figure present in your day to day life that will tell you what to do, where to go, when to go there, or how to do anything.

seems like a big deal to me but I wouldn't know, I wasn't a good student and didn't get to go to my graduation and my mother was devastated.

What is a "high school graduation"? What exactly is being awarded? We don't have them in UK, or at least in my secondary school / sixth form. Are the failures of school education who didn't get any qualifications not invited or are they told sit in a corner out of the way of the ones who did? I find the whole idea strange.
