Women/ racial minorities/ religious minorities/ LGBT/ the poor: Hey could we please start to get equal treatment in terms of things like voting, education, workforce opportunities, salary, criminal justice, marriage, military, and other areas? The data and statistics show that we've been historically oppressed and we just want to be given a fair shot at certain things, just like everyone else.

Plenty of other people: Sure, that's reasonable. [Society takes a few steps forward in terms of civil rights and fair treatment of everyone, but still has a long way to go.] Why not?

Social conservatives (as they clutch their pearls): Heavens no! How will I be able to operate as a human being with the knowledge that people who are different than me are given the same opportunities that I have, despite the fact that this is all chalked up to luck, genetics, or other factors outside of our control? I'd much rather dehumanize you and discriminate against you because I don't know you well, and I don't care at all about equity or social justice because *I* have everything that *I* need, so screw everyone else.

Everyone else: Why are you getting so offended, social conservatives? It's really not a big deal. Why are you insisting that you deserve special treatment while everyone else just wants things to be on an even playing field? There's no need to get offended or triggered by equality, and if we all pass the same tests and requirements as you, we should all have reasonable opportunity and success and happiness.
