If my fucking Kings won the cup. I think I'd be a little bit of a rioter. Why? Because we've never won the cup. "Screw this city for taking so damn long". Just kidding.... but really...
As glad as I am that the 'nucks lost, I'm really disappointed that this shit (although totally expected), went down. It's always sad to hear about someone losing a life to an event like this. And I feel like posters suchas EcstatiC should be thoroughly ashamed about their posts. People RATE riots? That's insane and preposterous. Way to value the life of a dead man through a 1-10 scale. Even worse, people bragging about other cities where riots are bigger? What? Why would anyone be proud of their city acting so primitively? Not only that, but when other TLers are concerned, turn back around and call us pussies? I don't know if you've ever been raided before, but it's a terrible, and traumatic experience. If anyone is to grow up, it would be the people taking the situation so lightheartedly.
Hopefully not an exorbitant amount of monetary and emotional damage was done. Best of luck Vancouver Yes, if you take a step back an view things logically a riot is stupid and harmful... Critically Humans aren't exactly logical beings(Though we like to think we are). If you get to the core, we are just animals... and as animals we are territorially and extremely violent... And I for one think, that though the damage caused does suck... the outcome to see our basic instincts in full swing is rather entertaining... Call me primitive, call me horrible/disgusting etc. but I enjoy watching our race show its true colours. and it brings be a strange feeling of pride and hope that My Country has a chance hang with the big boys of sports riots(Europe and soccer) We're not there yet.. but dammit we are trying! Also you claim to be concerned by a loss of life... welcome to earth, people die by the thousands a minute... Yes it sucks and it prolly could be avoided(My condolences to the family) But we die... it happens people get fucked up all the time for stupid reasons/retarded freak accidents... deal with it.
"Deal with it."?? Did you really mean it when you offered your condolences? It seems you keep contradicting yourself. "It sucks... but wait it actually doesn't..." You remind me of the few "slow" people I've seen (not calling you one) when I read your post and try to follow the dim and wavering thought-processes going on in your head.
Yes it's greeaaat Canada is trying to hang with the big boys in Europe. But the reason why European riots are taken seriously while everyone is laughing at the Canadian riots is because one is over soccer and the other is over... hockey. Hockey, really.

STOP. BRINGING. HOCKEY. INTO. THIS.
Don't post your retarded opinions about how Vancouver hockey fans should be embarrased. I watched this with thousands of other people. Everyone there went home depressed.
The people you see here, are in no way related to hockey. They were just looking for an excuse to destroy the city and the fans are the ones who rallied up to clean this mess up starting this morning.

Any Canadian would tell you that Vancouver is one of the best cities in Canada to visit. It's really embarrassing that something like this could happen here though, especially after how well the Olympics went.

What a bunch of tossers, why would wreck your own town just because you lost a sports game?
I mean the UK is known to have some of the most passionate football fans in the world but were not fucking dumb enough to trash our own citys, if we do trash a town its usually some one else's lol.

Simple yet true.
So many people posting pictures and bragging about taking part on their social networks... tons of photo and video evidence for police to identify people with.
This is not over. These people don't realize the trouble they're in I think. They won't catch everyone, but police are not idiots. Past riots in Canada (G20) have done very well to identify people responsible. Of course, there are always psychos coming from other countries JUST to riot and they will be gone far away but at least of the hundreds or thousands of participants, many of them will get caught.
Idiots that take joy in destruction and assault. Even just standing there and watching, taking pictures, etc... it's inciting more rioting. Everyone that stayed for the show is indirectly guilty of rioting as well, even if they didn't destroy anything. They made the job much harder for police and kept the ones rioting going. The majority of people seem like 16-24 year old people, not surprising.
With everything said, this was a pretty bad riot. Assaulting innocent people, burning random cars, stabbings, and even rumours of forcing a person to jump off a bridge (although police have said this wasn't a forced jump, who knows at this point... this don't want to incite more panic).
A sad day for humanity when a first world country has a relatively major riot over a hockey game. Makes me think some people don't deserve their liberties. I wish the army could take control of situations like this. Force everyone they catch into a boot camp and shape them up, maybe they wouldn't be as stupid in the future.
I could keep going for pages but I'll stop here. This situation and these people make me so angry I can barely think straight.

Thanks for labeling all of Canadians just because of a small group of people in Vancouver. When Calgary lost the Stanley Cup it wasn't THIS bad. You think you're the only one angry? Try being one of the large majority of sensible people living there.

Yeah.
Learn to not see groups of people as a single person, other you look just as ignorant as them.

I saw this coming a mile away. There will always be sore losers in sports. Nothing you can do about it just don't join in the stupidity.
|
I don't understand this, at all. As an American myself, I don't understand anyone's fascination with hockey, be they Canadian, Russian, American, etc. I have a large group of friends in the Vancouver area, and I can attest to the fact that not all Canadians are indeed mindless rioters.
However, I'd like to make a comment to all the Canadians in this thread asking everyone to differentiate between the insane rioters and the mentally stable Vancouverians(?): If you'd like us to treat you as different, please don't think all Americans are redneck hillbillies who marry their own cousins and shoot squirrels from their front porch.
|
It's sad to know that a group of people could use something such as the loss of a sporting event (aka an insignificant event) to justify the destruction of a city and the businesses therein.
Although it's hard to differentiate the Vancouver fans from the rioters (since most of them have jerseys on, which is most likely a cover) there's no doubt that a lot of them are fans who joined in the first batch of people who planned to orchestrate this thing.
It's just an excuse to loot and cause havoc for the sake of doing so. I can't recall this sort of thing happening at any Super Bowl in America, am I wrong?
|
This thread is terrible. The people are mad about political stuff, the sports arena happened to set them off. Who cares what it looks like to other countries, this happens in europe too. Things are bad and people are angry.

This might be a bit radical, but I'd seriously fire at them with rubber ammo, lock everyone I could down, fine couple thousand bucks and people would think twice next time. No mercy, no tolerance. I would understand if this was a political/social/economic manifestation, but still it doesn't justify all the damage done by those criminals.
|
This kind of thing happens everywhere, weather its political or for sports or something else. Stop labeling all of Canada because of riots. Its ridiculous.
|
In fairness, there aren't really that many Canadians in Vancouver ;-).
When Calgary lost in game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals, the worst anyone did was show their tits.
