i never thought i would see riots this bad in a first world country

I don't really understand why people would be saying things like "Well, Vancouver/Canada just dropped off of my list of places to visit". I promise you that wasn't everyone from Vancouver or Canada, it was a group of shit disturbers trying to re-enact a riot from 1994.
Points of importance:
-This riot was nothing compared to what happened in 1994 -News coverage and police statements indicate that only a fraction of people were actually causing trouble, the majority of people were taking picture for Facebook and videos for YouTube -This is not an indicator of how the rest of Vancouver acts in their day to day lives.
I agree, it makes us look bad, but Canadians are still the friendly folk we've always been. Every city has their share of jagoffs, just search Boston Fans in youtube, most people know the video I'm talking about. It's time to move on and stop dignifying the stupid behaviour of a few with responses, because 12 years down the road when we get to a Stanley Cup final again, we don't need people trying to recreate the "2011 Stanley Cup Riots".
I'll be downtown with the rest of the volunteers today cleaning up.

Don't post your retarded opinions about how Vancouver hockey fans should be embarrased. I watched this with thousands of other people. Everyone there went home depressed.
The people you see here, are in no way related to hockey. They were just looking for an excuse to destroy the city and the fans are the ones who rallied up to clean this mess up starting this morning.
there are tons of pictures of people decked out Nucks gear. The hell are you talking about???
a lot of people just showed up for chaos like in '94, but there was definitely plenty of canucks fans there.

you realize how little difference it makes by wearing a canucks jersey?. only a fraction of nucks fans are doing this, it's just dumbasses looting/people wanting to start shit.
idc if hate on nucks from a hockey standpoint but this doesn't have anything to do with hockey. when shit happens and people start doing stuff with 50000 other people it's a chain reaction.
i know a lot of people who went downtown just to take pictures and they weren't canucks fans. they're just people who want to be involved in this stupid shit
and 80% of the people i know who actually went downtown were just bandwagon fans. they don't care if the canucks are doing bad, or mediocre. that isn't a real fan. 80% of the people who are watching in vancouver are guys who never watch hockey in the regular season let alone 1st 2nd round of the playoffs

I love my NFL team, but I'm not gonna go burn my city down because they lost the superbowl. then are you really a fan?!?!?!?!?!?!? jk. but that picture with the couple making out in the middle of the riot needs some context. Only in Canada... Hahaha, I too was wondering about that. Looks like they were really getting it on. Its not as romantic as it appears, she is actually injured and he is aiding her, from a stab wound on her stomach. Ahhh thanks for that. I hope she's ok.

shows how much sports means to people. can't believe riots like this broke out looks like chaos

Almost makes me wish we lived in a big brother type society where every single on of those miscreants was hunted down and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Burning cop cars is one thing (standard mob fare), but that video of the mob beating a civilian trying to maintain a semblance of sanity sent me overboard. Most fucking disgusting thing I've ever seen.
Are we really still this primitive? Civilization is a joke.

I'm so sad to read this. I went to Vancouver and it's such a nice city.

Wearing a Canucks jersey doesn't make you a Canucks fan.

Saying "Oh my god Canadians/people from Vancouver/Canucks fans are such a disgrace" is like saying that German people are a disgrace because some German people were Nazis. Stop being retarded.

Pretty poor rioting. And what is up with smiling into the camera and then smashing a window in? At least cover your face up. COME ON. Bunch of amateurs.

364 days a year every 17 years lol
vancouver a great place, great people and shit. it's sad that this has to happen, and people will forget about this eventually. just want people to know that the city is really beautiful, there are good people, it's diverse. don't judge because of 1 event.

I believe riots are caused by a small handful of troublemakers mixed into a huge crowd - they may not even care about hockey at all - their sole purpose is to cause trouble and create a confusion so they can rob stores.
I believe the police will be hunting down trouble makers who foolishly allow themselves to be caught on camera.

dont understand why u have to destroy shit when ur team loses, big deal. ur team sucks, big deal, move on with your life.

I was right there for about an hour after the game and I regret not leaving. Thankfully I haven't seen my face in any pictures or videos, but I remember looking right into a camera and screaming for no reason. I wasn't drunk and I wasn't being an idiot. I was just kinda there trolling around with some friends. Like "yeah! kill that window! that's why we lost!" etc etc. I was right there when the first squad of riot police showed up and everyone started throwing things at them and yelled out "Why the hell do we hate the police!??!" and a bunch of people screamed at me swearing and that's when I threw my morals out and decided a white knight is not what I needed to be. It was insane and I think I stayed around just because I'll never experience anything like that ever again. I'm pretty worried something will pop up with me on it, even though there were tens of thousands of onlookers who weren't actually participating (like I was). That's why things go so out of hand, because the drunk idiots were getting cheers and attention from the people watching. If everyone who wasn't actually going to do anything got out of there, the situation would've been nothing. The police did a great job with the situation presented and the amount of resources they had. I just had hoped they would have all been in position well before the game ended because everyone knew this would happen with the score out of hand halfway through the 3rd. I was there to watch the game and when it ended I should have have left. Even when the game was on and still close, I could tell probably half the people there had no interest in the game. Everyone was drunk and high and just being complete idiots. It was inevitable that those type of actions would arise after what I saw before the game even ended.

For instance Liverpool doesn't win the premier league in almost 20 years and they were the team with most wins(now man utd has more) and they don't riot..
Benfica the best team in Portugal is being overshadowed by Porto in the last 30 years and we never rioted even with Porto being accused of various crimes and corruption for the last 30 years since they started winning..
I don't think this is acceptable or understandable.. it's really stupid and sad..
On the other hand football also brings forth too much violence and even ice hockey is nothing compared to football in that department..
I expect more from you canadiens since you guys are one of the most inteligent and peacefull countrys in the world.. My guess is that we're used to taking care of hooligans in Europe.. We've got PLENTY of experience with cases like this..
The picture of that skinny Asian guy is hilarious. Not even with a hokey stick he looks dangerous.
