How about we use this thread to discuss Firefox 5 and not turn it into the 34892nd Chrome vs Firefox flamewar? |
So I just found out that Firefox is already launching a new beta!
"The two main innovations compared with beta 4 is automatically activated Direct2D acceleration in Windows, and support for HSTS protocol, which will open up for greater security. Among the updates is also a new icon for Windows 7 and Vista."
"The latest version of Firefox Beta has the following changes:
Added support for CSS animations Added support for switching Firefox development channels The Do-Not-Track header preference has been moved to increase discoverability Improved canvas, JavaScript, memory, and networking performance Improved standards support for HTML5, XHR, MathML, SMIL, and canvas Improved spell checking for some locales Improved desktop environment integration for Linux users"

I updated the OP with more up to date release notes.

Well, I downloaded it. However Chrome has been winning me over as of late.

The Big fluke with chrome is not having an adblock.

How about this one... Out of FireFox, Chrome and IE9, IE9 loads webpages fastest on my setup. How is that even possible :S

Well they do have it, but from what I know and have experienced it did not work good at all. Maybe they fixed it, so I withdraw that point then. And I will stop with flames and whatnot =)

I am on it now.. figure ill beta it on work computer... but I need a feature to wow me.. The web design tools for chrome are very useful to me. FF has it but usually built within addons (not that there is anything wrong with that) I just need something to really stand on in this beta for me to finally choose FF over Chrome
Believe me I use both and when creating images I put IE, FF and Chrome on all of them to make sure all the professors at the university are happy!
@Supreme They do have Adblock, its does work. However in Chrome's code it is written so you can not block ad's in streams. This has to be fixed on Chromes part before Adblock can recognize it.
The speed of chrome is nice but its not a game breaker.

Uhm no. Safari and Chrome shares 90% of the code (they both use Webkit), Firefox is entirely separate in all respects.
@topic Seems like there are no useful new features in the Beta, so I'll probably not even try it out until they have something new interface-wise.

Yeah no real features yet, but "Improved canvas, JavaScript, memory, and networking performance" made me go from 4 to 5

I think IE 9 is a decent browser actually. It is mostly its predecessors that scare people off. However bugfixing and customising is, hands down, worse for IE9 than the rest and speed is absolutely not everything at the moment, when most pages are loaded in less than a second anyway. I don't know. I use firefox 3.x.x because of the add-ons and because chrome has a nasty habit of going non-responsive when a plug-in is crashing. Safari on windows is a horrible abomination of securityholes patched together and i did not like the way Opera worked at all when I tried it.
On the new beta: It seems like a step in the right direction. However as a relatively light user of the advanced features it seems to lack much improvement. Giving the relative amount of bugs in new releases, I don't plan on changing any time soon.
Edit: Added opinion on OP's topic!

All of those add-ons are available and working in 4, just FYI. And that is something to consider before switching actually. It will take some time before the most essential add-ons get made for the new beta.

Well that's just it, I've stayed away from IE since IE6, but as I've been teaching myself web development, I've kept Chrome / FF / IE9 handy (that's when I began noticing the difference). FF has me because of the addons, but I think I actually wouldn't mind IE9 provided I could get over my bias.
In any case, I'm running FF beta 5 now, and haven't noticed much of a difference.
|
I'm not sure if this is enough of a change for me to stop using Firefox 4. The only real difference I see is just the Direct2D acceleration. Does that really make a big difference in performance?

They are making smaller changes but still moving the version numbering a whole number. If they were going by their old numbering system this would probably be v 4.1. It's going to be a nice update, but nothing earth-shattering

I've been running the latest nightly builds and the new features for version 6 and even 7 are quite nice. Just hoping that electrolysis will arrive before they eventually code freeze for v7.

Mmmmh I use FF, but this has no great improvements for me

Dearest moderation team,
There is currently a typo in the warning box for this thread. Currently, it says "How about we use this thread to discuss Firefox 5 and not turn it into the 34892th Chrome vs Firefox flamewar?".
However, it ending with 92, means that it should be followed by a "nd", not a "th".
On topic: I look forward to giving this a shot, though it is always saddening when some of my ad-ons don't work =(

The Big fluke with chrome is not having an adblock. I used Firefox for a very, very long time before making the switch when Firefox 4 came. Adblock is hugely overrated in the modern internet (imo) because I support all the sites I frequent and I want them to make money.
Further Chrome has plenty of things going for it it still wins a lot of the tests and stuff I've seen. Also It has the addon gleebox that is no longer supported in firefox and that is completely unavailable in Firefox 4, can't live whiteout it.
Also it's not just a reputation of being fast. My laptop is 4 years old and when it's loading up my icons etc after startup I can click Firefox and wait a few seconds and then click Chrome, Chrome will start several seconds faster.
Chrome has a snappy minimalism feel to it GUI wise and feels more fluid to use.
This is my full reasoning for quitting Firefox when 4 was released: My favorite addon now unsupported awesome bar no longer using "i am lucky" when typing random string (yes it's configurable but it hurt my feelings and I felt misunderstood as a user) Poor gmail extensions Worse GUI No longer any interest in blocking ads

Got to admit. Really really hate firefox 4 and all the changes from 3.6. A lot of UI is just terrible. Switched to chrome because of it. and the memory leak is still there
Do still use firefox for addblockpro. Hope 5 fixes all the problems of 4 t.t

CSS3 Animations!
*chokes every firefox <5 user against the wall* update! As a webdesigner I'd love to expand my css features. Any support is good support!

I agree, the usage is kind of worrisome. The link posted by lbmaian with the AreWeSlimYet project sounds promising though.
I never actually realized how much it uses.. right now I have 8 tabs open, all of them are very simple tabs like teamliquid, or a picture, or another forum. The most resource intensive tabs are my gmail tab and my facebook tab (I'm guessing.. since everything else is just static text or a picture). And yet it uses up 500mb! I opened up the exact same tabs in ie7 (haven't updated IE in a while apparently) and it only used 250mb after a lil while.
The test may not be accurate since ff has been running longer, and keeps more stuff in memory (like "re-open last closed tab" or whatever), but still, the magnitude of the difference is more than just that.
Still love FF though, and the new default UI changes in 4.0 are awesome once I got them how I like it. I don't think any browser can ever possibly be more space efficient than my current setup =D.
Anyway, fingers crossed for the AreWeSlimYet project

i wanna contribute to the flamewar
opera > ff & chrome
sincerely, a ff user since ff 1.x
|
wish they'd just make it less computer usage
I have no idea what this means. If you mean less resource usage, FF5 is far slimmer than FF4; I haven't even reached 300MB of memory usage, when FF4 often reached 500MB within a few hours. It's also surprisingly fast to start.
So they're clearly moving in the right direction.
Adblock is hugely overrated in the modern internet (imo) because I support all the sites I frequent and I want them to make money.
I have gotten viruses two times in my life. The first was due to a WinXP network exploit. The second was because of some ad on a random site. Ever since then, I shut off all Javascript by default. I'll open it up temporarily as needed, or permanently for sites that I frequent (that use Javascript). But it's just too much of a vulnerability to have on by default.
Browsing the web without a good Javascript blocker is like having sex without a condom. You might do it with people you know well, but you certainly don't want to do it with some random person off the street. And if you do, then you'll eventually get what you expect to.
|
Adblock also allows you to block images that you want, and chore has this ridiculous minimalistic GUI that is not functional, and saves 1cm.
|

thats insane lol, my IE takes about 30-50 seconds to load up when I click on it (no i'm not exagerating). I use Firefox and its instant :D.
Also noxie's a noob ^^.

I gave it a quick go, but I use gdi++ to get OS X style font rendering on Windows, and Firefox must provide its own font rendering because it looks completely different than the rest of Windows/Chrome with gdi++ hooked in. Looks like I'm sticking to Chrome. It's quite a pity though because it does seem to run nicely and looks pretty good.
|
I really hope FF5 fixes all the issues I've been having with FF4 randomly freezing and forcing me to manually close it down. I'm not sure if it was user error causing this but I am pretty tech savvy and I could find no cause for this - seemed to happen randomly. I've used FF for as long as I can remember so I really don't want to switch but if my issues continue on I'll move on to chrome. *crosses fingers*
|
Hope they fix some of the issues I've been having with Firefox recently.
1. Flash videos continuing to play even after I've closed their tab, forcing me to end the Firefox Plugin Container on the Task Manager. 2. Tabs opening into new windows when I try to move them but accidentally drag them down. NOBODY FUCKING WANTS THIS FEATURE.

I've heard that there are some are some awesome browsers beyond the big 5--IE, Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Opera--but I have no idea what they are.
So, obviously a google and wiki search tells me about several other browsers, but can anyone please explain why they would be better than the big 5?

Firefox 4 blocks video ads and everything else just fine...

So I just got FF5 updated (I like being able to update within the app, just found out if you go to about->firefox, it starts downloading the update and gives you a button right there) On boot with 7 simple tabs using 280mb, so not *too* bad I suppose. We'll see if this climbs though back to ~400-500 or so as before.
edit: Nope, back up to 400+mb in a relatively short time. Oh well.
This new ctrl+shift+e stuff is kind of nonsense I think. But I imagine there are people who'd love that. edit2: apparently this stuff was also in ff4 and I just never noticed lol

I'll check it out, Firefox 4 on Linux is definitely is lacking in terms of desktop environment integration, couldn't even give us an orange Firefox button, we had to edit a config file to change it from gray :'(

I use it to put streams in their own window in order to move them to a second monitor all the time. I also never have the issue of accidentally detaching a tab while moving... how far do people move the mouse down, it seems very forgiving :/

For the record, I found Firefox 4.0/4.1 not much of a speed improvement over 3.5/3.6. However, I'm noticing a significant speed increase with Firefox 5.0. Nice stuff.

This is actually really useful for me, I use it all the time with two monitors at least.

just switched, have about 10 tabs open, random pages, and im @ 200mb, seems typical to firefox for me, not noticing any performance increase, im sure its there, just so minimal its hard to tell.
