How about we use this thread to discuss Firefox 5 and not turn it into the 34892nd Chrome vs Firefox flamewar?

So I just found out that Firefox is already launching a new beta!

"The two main innovations compared with beta 4 is automatically activated Direct2D acceleration in Windows, and support for HSTS protocol, which will open up for greater security. Among the updates is also a new icon for Windows 7 and Vista."

"The latest version of Firefox Beta has the following changes:

Added support for CSS animations
Added support for switching Firefox development channels
The Do-Not-Track header preference has been moved to increase discoverability
Improved canvas, JavaScript, memory, and networking performance
Improved standards support for HTML5, XHR, MathML, SMIL, and canvas
Improved spell checking for some locales
Improved desktop environment integration for Linux users"

Complete release notes and bug fixes : http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/5.0beta/releasenotes/buglist.html

And here is the download link (Multiple language selection available): http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-beta.html

Well, I downloaded it. However Chrome has been winning me over as of late.

Really? I mean the only thing that Chrome has for it as a browser is the reputation of being fast.
IMO even Opera, which is quite an awesome broswer tbh, is better.

The Big fluke with chrome is not having an adblock.

How about this one... Out of FireFox, Chrome and IE9, IE9 loads webpages fastest on my setup. How is that even possible :S

Chrome has for a while had extension support. And they worked with the makers of adblock plus to get adblock on their browser.

Well they do have it, but from what I know and have experienced it did not work good at all.
Maybe they fixed it, so I withdraw that point then. And I will stop with flames and whatnot =)

I am on it now.. figure ill beta it on work computer... but I need a feature to wow me.. The web design tools for chrome are very useful to me. FF has it but usually built within addons (not that there is anything wrong with that) I just need something to really stand on in this beta for me to finally choose FF over Chrome

Believe me I use both and when creating images I put IE, FF and Chrome on all of them to make sure all the professors at the university are happy!

@Supreme They do have Adblock, its does work. However in Chrome's code it is written so you can not block ad's in streams. This has to be fixed on Chromes part before Adblock can recognize it.

The speed of chrome is nice but its not a game breaker.

Uhm no. Safari and Chrome shares 90% of the code (they both use Webkit), Firefox is entirely separate in all respects.

@topic Seems like there are no useful new features in the Beta, so I'll probably not even try it out until they have something new interface-wise.

Yeah no real features yet, but
"Improved canvas, JavaScript, memory, and networking performance" made me go from 4 to 5

I think IE 9 is a decent browser actually. It is mostly its predecessors that scare people off. However bugfixing and customising is, hands down, worse for IE9 than the rest and speed is absolutely not everything at the moment, when most pages are loaded in less than a second anyway. I don't know. I use firefox 3.x.x because of the add-ons and because chrome has a nasty habit of going non-responsive when a plug-in is crashing. Safari on windows is a horrible abomination of securityholes patched together and i did not like the way Opera worked at all when I tried it.

On the new beta: It seems like a step in the right direction. However as a relatively light user of the advanced features it seems to lack much improvement. Giving the relative amount of bugs in new releases, I don't plan on changing any time soon.

Edit: Added opinion on OP's topic!

All of those add-ons are available and working in 4, just FYI.
And that is something to consider before switching actually.
It will take some time before the most essential add-ons get made for the new beta.

You're right, I mixed those up ^^ But both still share lots of code and are essentially very similar. And money comes from the same place. So it doesn't really matter much which you use. Both are awesome

Well that's just it, I've stayed away from IE since IE6, but as I've been teaching myself web development, I've kept Chrome / FF / IE9 handy (that's when I began noticing the difference). FF has me because of the addons, but I think I actually wouldn't mind IE9 provided I could get over my bias.

In any case, I'm running FF beta 5 now, and haven't noticed much of a difference.

I'm not sure if this is enough of a change for me to stop using Firefox 4. The only real difference I see is just the Direct2D acceleration. Does that really make a big difference in performance?

It's not supposed to be a drastic change like Firefox 2 --> 3 and to a lesser extent 3 --> 4

They are making smaller changes but still moving the version numbering a whole number. If they were going by their old numbering system this would probably be v 4.1. It's going to be a nice update, but nothing earth-shattering
