I believe the general explanation for this phenomenon is that things becoming "cool" means they get popular and thus watered and dumbed down from their original content to suit a wider audience, and negatively affects the "original" fan. At least in the case of music, mostly.

Before USB Flash memory was popular, I owned a 16meg USB flash drive and use it alot at school.

Was a Zelda fan before it was huge. I had the NES Zelda pre-order and I still got the gold version of the cartige

I kind of think like OP, but it's because i don't like when people like something because it's mainstream. I know this isn't always the case, but i generalize a lot. Generalizing sucks

Let's get something straight... WoW is and never will be "cool". And I hate when people do what you do. I was at the pool with some friends and a song came on the loudspeaker, one of my friends said he liked that song and another one instantly brought up for he liked that song a few months ago. Hate it.

I watched Futurama before it was cool.
I watched Family Guy before it was cool.
I was on that website way before it was cool.
I listened to dubstep way before it was cool as well.

The latter two things have become significantly worse due to their exposure, and hence I get pretty pissed off at how mainstream they both are. I tend to rage at a lot of things, pretty much everything really.
